Cuba Smugglers

Intro: The first Biz Bowl appearance in both teams history. Credit to RuskieTitan for taking his talented team to the championship. For Cuba, this is an opportunity to vault into rarefied territory few teams have been able to achieve.

Offense

Ivory Coast is led by their dynamic and elite pass rush. In all instances teams need to prepare for one of the trio of edge rushes to be an impactful difference maker that can slow an offense down. As a result, it is a very good thing that we can protect the edges. Mekhi Becton has been a franchise level blind side protector and his sheer size should give DeShaun Watson a clean pocket on more than a few plays. Young or Garrett are definitely impactful rushers on the edge but we think Becton can give Watson numerous opportunities to target the Ivory Coast secondary with a clean pocket. There will have to be awareness that Young, Mack, and Garrett are eventually going to frustrate the timing of the offense, and in a game like this the dual threat ability of Watson to stress a defense with his legs becomes potentially game changing. The redzone, 3rd and shorts, & manageable down/distances are areas Watson has the green light (and is advised) to tuck the ball and let his speed be something Ivory Coast has to account for with blitzes or using the trio of pass rushes together for spy purposes. All of the extra attention to Watson will open up different areas of our gameplan that can yield success.

Traditionally a mention of our edge protection is good enough but throughly addressing how we plan to protect Watson against Young, Mack, & Garrett will decide the game. While Becton gets an opportunity to protect the left side, the impact of Daryl Williams has given the team two well rounded players that we can run behind or expect to hold in pass protection for a short period of time so Watson can get the ball out of his arms. In the interior, when Ivory Coast brings their vaunted speed package, Jensen is asked to leave Jenkins/DeCastro isolated to help the other one double to protect an edge rusher moving inside. Ultimately while this strategy does not guarantee much because the talent level of Ivory Coast, it does give us true instances of 15-20 passes (30-35 pass attempts is ideal game script) that we can expect Watson has a clean pocket for 3 seconds or less and can make some impactful plays that can lead to success.

Of course, our individual player to finish with the most touches is Dalvin Cook. If we can protect DeShaun Watson, there are some exploitable matchups that can yield success in our favor. Lavonte David & Devin White form a prolific pair of second level players that have achieved a great deal of success in the NFL that can be translated in BDL. They are part of a defense that has given up 1 100 yard rusher in the entire season. That one player happens to be our bellcow in this game, so we aren’t hesitant to let Dalvin touch the ball frequently and continually involve him so it can make the IC pass rush less potent and removes responsibility for DeShaun Watson to feel like he has to win the game by himself. We are running behind Mekhi Becton until a team shows they can stop the inside zones or the counters with DeCastro going behind Jenkins/Becton and using 3 pro bowl level talents to establish our presence. When Khalil Mack is not on the edge to right side, we’ll get Dalvin open on some tosses to get his speed out on the edge and into the second level. It’s important to remember his dynamic ability if he can get beyond the LOS as the IC secondary does not have dynamic defenders against the run.

Finally, we’re excited to match our receivers with this secondary. Justin Jefferson has obviously been a relevation as a rookie but Marvin Jones Jr. has been productive in the past few weeks. Jefferson will lineup across the board but we like the matchups we get when he’s in the slot. Patrick Peterson will likely occupy some shadow responsibility against Jefferson so moving to the slot gives us a great bet to isolate the other CBs. We have seen Cole Beasley and Tyler Lockett have success against Peterson so we think Jefferson will have success if we target him enough times. Screens will be used 3-4 times to minimize the IC pass rush and get the ball in our best receivers hands. DJ Chark is the next high flyer and goes back to having some isolation opportunities depending on who McCourty is responsible for helping deep. Jefferson will run more crossing routes from the slot and Chark will begin the game as mid level target with back shoulder targets and comeback routes that are effective with a 5 step drop. Chark will get some slant opportunities in the redzone as AJ Terrell and Trevon Diggs have had their fair share of issues in coverage this season. Finally, Marvin Jones Jr and Denzel Mims get the supplementary targets. Mims main objective will be going deep but Marvin Jones Jr. has quietly been extremely effective in the past few week. He’s a big bodied redzone target and we like the concepts of using hi-lo concepts off play action in the second half with Chark being  the home run hitter. Chark will again be featured on stop and go moves but paired with double moves that we are especially eager to go after Diggs in these instances. Dalvin Cook will be the target some some shallow routes to against counter act the pass rush and the RPO game with Kyle Juszcyzk/Dalvin Cook is a stable we use in the redzone to give the lesser opposing option Juszcyk a chance to find the end zone from a split backs formation. We are using every weapon on our offense in this game and particularly in the redzone want to display innovative ideas that Ivory Coast has yet to see us lineup with.

Defense

We know Ryan Tannehill very well as he’s had two separate instances of playing with us and was the first QB to lead a Cuba playoff victory in 2013. Its full circle getting an opportunity to matchup with him and an extremely impressive group of talent on offense.

Terry McLaurin is out for this game and while it improves our chance at slowing down the passing game still is problem because the HWS guys Ivory Coast occupies. We are again going to play a relatively vanilla coverage scheme based on preventing the deep play and mix with zone blitzes to anticipate the bootlegs Ivory Coast likes to utilize to get Tannehill outside the pocket. With Richard Sherman being out we are moving Kenny Moore to the boundary and making our safeties responsible for a pass rush presence beyond our front four. Tyrann Mathieu will move to the slot position against some 3 WR sets and instead come off the edge to force IC to create the correct matchup adjustments on the offensive line.

Nick Chubb is the primary defender we want to contain as his ability to keep down and distances manageable for Ivory Coast makes their lethal play action game possible. The return of Vince Williams stabilizes our LB corp and his ability will help our run defense prepare for the dynamic Chubb. As it stands, the focus on early downs will be preparing for Chubb as Ivory Coast posses one of the best receiving backs in Austin Ekeler to pair with Tannehill as a passer. We are aiming to use more run friendly sets with Armstead/Jordan on the edges and Nnadi pairing with Jones to help our LBs handle Nick Chubb. The right side of the Ivory Coast offensive line gives us hope we can get pressures on passing downs and we’ve got some wrinkles to pair Gary with Jordan against the right side to take advantage of Ivory Coast having some injury issues after Zack Martin got hurt. With more coverage detail we can emphasize the defensive line to specific formations that involve Nick Chubb. We can align Armstead in the interior on passing downs to bring another pass rusher across from Cam Jordan. We will keep Jordan at the RE spot to give us the best opportunity to create stops in the running game and pressures in pass rush. Denico Autry will play some edge rush opportunities with Chubb in the game to keep a run defense presence against Trent Williams. Hughes, Gary, Judon, Autry, Highsmith, and Armstead form a group that can handle uptempo snaps while interchangeably creating opportunities for success in the passing game.

This is a championship level of a receiving core even without the impressive McLaurin out for the game. Our zone coverages schemes will begin in cover 3 so Jimmie Ward or Khari Willis responsibility for the shorter areas of the field. Jimmie Ward will be the safety on 3 receiver sets that feature Austin Ekeler for 11 personnel. His coverage responsibility will be aiming to make the plays on the ball and account for screens or RPOs where Tannehill has enough athletic ability to test defenses. Tyrann Mathieu will be the last line for the majority of the game and will be asked to help defend whoever covers Chase Claypool. Chris Davis and Robby Anderson are some difficult matchup problems in this game so we are playing zone coverage. Moore abandons run defense responsibility to cover on the edge and Isaiah Oliver takes his spot as the slot CB. If we decide to get fancy with zone blitzes, it’ll be Tyrann Mathieu coming from the slot to handle bootlegs on short down distances or redzone situations where Ivory Coast aims to bunch and take use RPOs defending Tannehill as a runner (he scored 2 TDs last week). In more traditional instances Jimmie Ward will rotate down to help cover the middle of the field.

We will lineup in man coverage on 12 personnel. Jenoris Jenkins covers Robby Anderson and Kenny Moore covers Corey Davis. Khari Willis will come down in the box to replace Jimmie Ward. This is a team that can win in lots of ways so we ultimately seek to run zone coverages that prepare us for the speed of this offense and the zone blitz will challenge Ryan Tannehill’s ability to win outside the pocket. Eric Rowe is our emergency slot CB but biggest responsibility is covering Jared Cook in man coverage.

Ivory Coast

Motivation- Just Win Baby!

Offense
Primary Formation: 11 Personnel Single Back
- We are going to stick with our bread and butter for our primary formation this game, consisting of 3 wide receivers, a tight end, and a single back. We’ll be operating with Tannehill under center as well as splitting some time in the pistol and shotgun. We plan on leveraging Anthony Sherman as a lead back in some short yardage scenarios, as well as bringing out Josh Jones as a 6thoffensive lineman. We’ll also leverage some 21 personnel with Chubb in the backfield along with Ekeler, who will then primarily motion out wide.

Running Game Focus- We are going to continue to ride the Chubb train as far as possible, and aim to give him at least 25 carries this game. We continue to start Ricky Wagner at right guard, and now with multiple BDL playoff games under his belt at RG, we anticipate he’s not going to be as much of a liability as before. While Cuba certainly has an impressive defensive line, that interior is no Donald-Cox combo, and more importantly, the rest of our offensive line has played well. When we run inside we will focus on primarily running behind the left side of our offensive line (Williams-Lewis-Kelce), and we’ll have a couple of counter plays with Lewis pulling to the right side to catch the defense off-balance. Kelce will work on helping double team block for either Lewis or Wagner to open up lanes and get up to the second level. We’ll have some runs to the outside as well, relying on Williams to win his matchup to seal the left side, and while we trust Kelly to hold his own on the right, we’ll have Cook help double team if Cam Jordan is on that side and disrupting. Anthony Sherman will be available for assisting as a lead blocker on short yardage situations, and we will also be willing to bring out Josh Jones in short yardage goal line situations. Our jumbo package will feature Chubb, Sherman, Cook, Jones, and Davis (as the best blocking WR). Ekeler will come in on some 3rd downs to give Chubb a breather, and will get a few carries this game as well, coming out of shotgun / pistol mostly.

Passing Game Focus- With the news that Terry may be unable to play, we elevate Corey Davis (last week: 4/110/1) to the starting two with Robby Anderson, and have Chase Claypool round out the starting trio. We also welcome back DeSean Jackson, and will rotate him into the game to provide breaks for the other receivers as well as threaten the coverage deep. If McLaurin is able to go, he’ll come off the bench to give us another added element in the passing game, but we aren’t going to rely on it. Austin Ekeler will be brought in on passing downs, sometimes at the same time as Chubb, and motion out wide to operate as another receiver, with Tannehill throwing to him if we have a mismatch against the defense. We’ll want to have the running game set up some early down playaction passes with Tannehill looking to take advantage of his deep ball to Davis / Claypool or others. Jared Cook will spend time both on the line chipping at the end before releasing as well as split out wide, and we’ll want to take advantage of his ability against Cuba’s linebackers. Our early passing downs we will be aggressive against Cuba’s defense, looking to hit one some big plays early to try and jump out to a lead. Third down passes we will prioritize moving the sticks, but we will trust Tannehill to rip one deep if he sees an opportunity. On most pass plays we’ll send at least one of the receivers deep, or Cook to catch the defense off-guard. The other receivers will be operating in the intermediate area, focusing on giving Tannehill easy reads and limiting long-developing plays. We’ll run some bootlegs to get Tannehill outside the pocket and having a throw-run option presented. If we’re encountering a lot of man coverage with the cornerbacks, we’ll start running more slants and rub routes. If we’re seeing more zone coverage, we’ll rely on flood routes designed to attack a specific side of the field to overwhelm the defense, and we aren’t afraid to throw some bubble screens if they play off a bit. We’re going to have motion pre-snap on most plays, typically to force the defense to shift but also see if it can’t tip whether it’s man or zone, and we’ll run a few jet sweep pass plays to the motion man across the line of scrimmage out of shotgun / pistol. We’ll usually leave our single back in to help pass protect, but if we see that Cuba is being extremely aggressive we’ll throw a few screens in to counter. We will use Josh Jones as another blocker a few times in the redzone, but if we are close to the endzone (5 yards or less), on one second down play we will run a play action pass to Jones (who reports as eligible every time and starts blocking then goes out on a route) as our single trick play for the game - if he's not open Tannehill will tuck and run on the rollout or throw away for 3rd down.

X-Factor on Offense: Nick “Old School” Chubb- tenor.gif

In the era of high flying aerial attacks, Nick Chubb brings an old school mentality by letting his running do the talking for him. He’s going to be leaned on control the clock this game, limit the possessions that Cuba has, and grind out the necessary yardage to keep the offense moving. He’s going to be featured as our bell cow this game, looking to receive at least 30 touches, and we believe he can help carry the team to victory.

Defense
Defensive Formation: 4-2-5 Defense- We expect to see Cuba come out with three receivers as their primary offensive set, so we will prepare with 5 defensive backs. When Cuba comes out with two receivers or fewer, we will bring off Diggs / Jackson and roll with Peterson and Terrell on the outside with Patrick Queen at MLB for a 4-3 look (kicking David to WLB and White to SLB). Against four receivers, we will utilize both Diggs and Jackson in the slot and bring out White.

Against the Pass: Tampa-2- In facing Watson and Cuba’s prolific passing attack, we will come out leveraging a nickel set of the Tampa-2 zone defense: Jordan Whitehead and Devin McCourty will take the deep halves, Patrick Peterson and AJ Terrell (who has forced 3 fumbles in the last 5 weeks) will be our boundary cornerbacks, with Devin White and Trevon Diggs / Adoree’ Jackson (those two will be rotating as our nickel CB) taking away the middle hooks while Lavonte David handles the deep middle as the middle linebacker. Our defensive line will be focused on one gap penetration to get after Watson as quickly as possible, with our outside cornerbacks playing press at times to disrupt the quick passing game and giving the line more time to collapse the pocket. We'll be coming into the game with 7 defensive linemen, and believe we'll be able to keep guys fresh and attacking well into the 4th quarter. With us playing zone, the hope is that we’ll be able to generate some turnovers off pressured throws from Watson with having the defenders facing the quarterback, as well as have the added element of being able to come up quickly with our speed to put a halt to any Watson scramble. While we’re going to leverage the Tampa-2 coverage as our primary coverage, we’ll also run cover-2 man-under schemes, as well as some cover-1 (likely 60-25-15 split). With the cover-2, our safeties will cover deep, we’ll keep Peterson and Terrell on the outside with Diggs / Jackson in the slot. We will avoid having our cornerbacks shadow to not tip off whether we’re operating out of the tampa-2 or a man-under scheme. Lavonte David in a cover-2 man under will be tasked with the tight end (or primary back if no TE and two backs), while Devin White will take the primary running back, or second tight end in the absence of a back. With a 4-3 look Patrick Queen will have the second back / TE. When we’re in a dime look (4 CBs), we’ll mix between a Tampa-2 and a cover-2, with David staying on as the lone backer and taking the TE/HB on man coverage. We’ll run the Tampa-2 quarters (see below) about a third of the time in our while operating out of the Tampa-2; the other two thirds will be ‘true’ Tampa-2. We'll only leverage the quarters Tampa-2 while in nickel or dime formation (3 or 4 CBs). Our goal will be to try and crowd the short to intermediate range as much as possible, and leverage our defense’s speed to quickly close on anything thrown short while also quickly reacting to running plays. We have faith in our defensive line to be able to bring the pressure with just the front 4 without requiring blitzes during the Tampa-2 and prevent deep plays from properly developing. When we run a cover-1, we’ll have one of the safeties alternate coverage duties with Devin White in man, and White will be brought as an additional blitzer most of the time, with spy duty on third and long. We will also feature our Hydra pass rush on 3rd and long, bringing Chase Young onto the field to join Khalil Mack and Myles Garrett (with one of the three alternating sliding inside) to generate more pass rush.

This graph above ^^^ is to help illustrate the Tampa-2 look that we will run. In nickel, the S will be the slot cornerback who will be split out wider.

Klieman-hybrid-tampa.jpg
This graph above ^^^ is to help illustrate the quarters scheme with our Tampa-2 look.

Against the Run- Our defensive line will be primarily focused on one gap responsibility, and we will seek to take advantage of our elite edge players against the Cuba tackles. We’ll have Hurst and Payne start at interior tackle, and bring in Ogunjobi and Omenihu as part of the interior rotation. With those four we feel we'll be able to keep the interior fresh and in attack mode all game long. Our interior defensive linemen may be overshadowed by the edges, but they are no slouches themselves, and with the amount of attention that our edges will get, we feel that the interior guys will be able to make an impact in stopping the run to contain Cook as well as prevent Watson from being able to scramble around. We’re going to have our edges play the run on the way to the quarterback, and contain any run attempting to go to the outside. Our linebackers possess the speed to run down anything that goes east-west, and will be able to quickly accelerate to the line of scrimmage when they read run. With the Tampa-2 coverages, we’ll have our safeties focused on coverage to avoid biting on play action attempts, and we like our corners to be able to come up and make tackles in the running game. Cook is a prolific runner, but we feel that if we can get out to an early lead and control the clock with Chubb, it will limit the impact that Cook will have in the running game. With Devin White coming on the rare blitz but otherwise generally having 7 players in coverage, we feel confident our defense will be able to react to running plays and keep Cook from breaking one loose.

X-Factor on Defense: Hydra- giphy.gifgiphy.gifgiphy-downsized-large.gif

We will once again feature our trio of pass rushers on 3rd and longs (7+) with having Khalil Mack, Myles Garrett, and Chase Young all out on the field at the same time. These edges, along with our other defensive linemen, have helped us get this far in the playoffs, and we (cue Bernie Sanders voice) call upon them once again to help us win one more game this season. Mekhi Becton has had a solid rookie season… but he’s still a rookie going up against these monsters. Daryl Williams on the opposite side is a mismatch waiting to happen. Thanks to these rushers, we feel confident in containing the run, as well as be able to have 7 players in coverage against the pass on most plays and still be able to generate pressures converted into knockdowns and sacks against Watson.

Final Note- This 2020 season has been a wild ride, and regardless of the outcome it's been another fun year in this league with all of you. @MD4L, you have a phenomenal squad, and I look forward to seeing our teams match up for what should be an exciting Bizz bowl!

Man, this is a close game and I can really see it going either way. I like Cuba's gameplan a little bit more, and to be frank, I think Watson is peaking right now and just creates too much of a headache for the Ivory Coast defense. Love IC's plan to pound the rock with Chubb, but I don't think they put together enough consistent long drives to keep pace with Cuba.

I love ICBR's 'hydra' line or whatever they do there with Garrett, Mack and Young. I think most games the soul crushing ability of those guys alone is an instant game changer. There are only a couple QB's in the league who have shown that even under immense duress at times they can make big plays happen and Deshaun Watson is one of them. With McLaurin out, ICBR still has a pretty good set of weapons, but it hurts. DeSean Jackson catching a bomb this week will test a secondary too. I like Frogs going cover 3 though for that deep security and added safety help against Chubb, and getting Williams back is a big bonus in the run game.

I think both guys had incredible years. Frogs with overcoming a ridiculous amount of injuries this year early on and never giving up, and Ruskie for proving pass rush and running game can beat a perceived 'weakness' at QB.

I think the game is a grinder but Watson makes magic happen late. 17-14 Cuba.

I think Ivory Coast gets the W here. They come out in majority zone while Cuba plans to attack certain players which doesn't work as well in zone.  Also think moving Gary inside is a large mistake against a guy whose mainly played tackle in his career. He's used to guys like Gary/Jordan.  With both teams deploying heavy zone looks, it'll be up to the d lines vs o line battle and while I like Cuba line, Becton had his issues with Garrett this past week Irl.  Both running backs have solid outings, deshaun hits one deep look but I'll take Ic 20-16

I agree with a lot of this. I think the Hydra is the game wrecking difference and while Watson will keep fighting and this will be a back and forth game I think in the end a great IC defense is the difference maker and this defense wins IC a championship here.

I think this game will come down to which offensive line will hold up better. I really hate that Ivory Coast is playing Ricky Wagner at G, but they have the clear advantage on the defensive line.

Overall, I think Cuba’s offensive line is very good (which bad offensive lines don’t play this round most likely), but I agree with Ivory Coast that they still have mismatches against the tackles. I would have liked to see more from Cuba in regards to protection.

I would have voted for Ivory Coast, but they clearly don’t recognize me as a voter.
