2020 Week #17 GDT Steelers vs. Browns

Recommended Posts

NFL made a pretty clear and conscious decision to be lax on holding calls this year. If you believe the ship will be righted next week, you are going to be very disappointed.

Holding calls from 2015 to 2019*: 721, 720, 678, 735, 732. Holding calls in 2020: 459

The biggest difference was the first month of the season, and the most obvious statistical showing that something was off. Without an offseason, without a preseason, with limited camps -- the league saw the lowest BY FAR offensive holding output of its first month. The average from the 5 years above was 197.8 in the first 4 games, 2020.....102. There were 50+ holding calls in a lot of weeks from the past 5 seasons and this years week 1 saw 15.....thats, that's just a comically low number in a pandemic shortened year.

Game speeds up. Points are up. People are in love with their fantasy output. This isn't changing. Though, it would be funny to watch the NFL tighten up NOW.

(This isn't a post to tell anyone to stop complaining that obvious holding calls are not being called, I just like doing the investigating)

*those numbers also include playoffs for those years, but playoffs rarely broke 20 total so the difference still stands.

we swept them 3 games that year, and at the time I think that was never done before. Then at the end of the game belecheat refused to shake Greg Lloyds hand

Steelers swept the Ravens three games in 2008 as well, when the Steelers won the SB that year. The Ravens returned the favor in 2014 after they beat the Steelers in Baltimore and the Steelers beat them 43-23 in Pittsburgh. Flacco and company dominated in a game without Leveon Bell and the Ravens won 30-17 and then losing a close one to the Patriots the next week.

When the announcers, who were ballwashing the Browns for most of the game are pointing out all the penalties missed by the refs, it is not a good look.  The holding was egregious all gamer on the Steelers.  By the Oline and the Dbs.

between covid , the refs and possibly the weather, the game could come down to a dropped pass (or great pass catch) , missed tackle, missed challenge  or since we are at Hines field, the surface could play a role. I just hope the refs don't ruin it and "the better team wins".   Fans want this to be the norm but it doesn't always go that way. If there are OL tackling and getting away with it, tomlin better get on it because we aren't going to have fans like buffalo will.

steeles defense has been elite for two yrs and led the NFL in sacks 4 yrs in a row..but not a peep about Kieth Butler getting looks for a HC job lol

has a tomlin assistant ever been interviewed for a HC Job in 13 yrs?

Arians.

He has a lot of old assistants IIRC.   The younger ones are never that good.

Yea, on the offensive side under Tomlin we've gone:

Ariens - Now a HC and can be part of his "tree"

Haley - Out of football after being let go

Fitchner - age and underperforming is why he doesn't get a look

Defense:

Labeau - Age

Butler - Should get a look but age will hold him back.

ST's:

Smith - shouldn't even hold his job.

Now where the Tomlin tree is strong?  Positional coaches.  They've been moving on to be decent college OC/DC's.
