Surprised that anyone is surprised at this.  Always by far the most likely outcome.

Draft a QB. Play him.  Suck.  He either proves he can be the guy “in the future”, or you have a top pick for next year’s class and you move on.  No more stop gaps.

Personally, I think Howell is worth a shot.  He’s a good fit for Hackett’s offense, great long ball, decent athleticism. Trade down to 15-20, pick up another first next year (and maybe more), roll the dice with him.  Surround him with OL help through draft/Fa. It will be ugly, but if he proves he’s the guy - awesome. If not, take your 2 firsts next year (including what should be a very high one) and go get one of the studs from next year’s class.

To elucidate further - what exactly is the point of going to get another average vet?  All that will do for you is prevent you from having a high enough draft pick to solve the problem in the future.  Take your medicine and take the chance on the rookie.

Oh god. What do you suppose we gave up for him 😳. Doesn’t really matter, without a QB we were never going to win again, and I’m stoked to have him.

This is where it gets tricky for Paton and the rest of the leadership.

With Rodgers out of the picture, Wilson unlikely to be moved and Watson with 22 charges pending, what option do they have to sell the fan base?

There is no way they would sign/trade for a Jimmy G/Trubisky/Mariota/Winston type and then do another open competition in camp with Lock, would they? Sign or trade for one of those four and tell the fan base that this middle-of-the-pack QB acquisition is going to be different than Teddy, Keenum and Flacco? No one will buy that. No one.

They almost have to draft someone in the first, even if they decide to give him a red shirt season a la Trey Lance and sign one of the aforementioned "bridge" veterans.

This is an awful, awful day. Not just for us as fans but for Paton, Hackett, the rest of the staff and the new owner as well.

Can I ask why they need to sell the fan base? Denver fans buy tickets and show up to games. Since when does the FO care about selling anything to the fanbase?

You hired an offensive coach. You have a young QB under contract who has some skills to mold. Maybe focus on that relationship and what the new staff can do for him?

This all or nothing, we have to land the big name, proven QB thing Denver fans have going seems insane to me. Stop waiting on the next Peyton Manning to fall into your laps and start finding ways to develop QBs.
