He's 23. Younger than Burrow and ~250 days older than Tua and Herbert.

This doesn’t particularly matter though. He is 23, so he makes for a quality reclamation project that could earn the Jets a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick. However he’s been in the league for 3 years. There’s no way you pick up his 5th year option with what you’ve seen over the first three seasons.

So Darnold literally only has 1 year left on his deal. After that you’d be forced to have to negotiate with him and potentially lose out. If you’re a team that spent a 3rd round pick on him, that’s not much more than a drop in the bucket for a chance to turn him around.

But if you’re a team with a top 3 pick in the draft that has the potential to acquire a QB for at least 4 years of “cheap” (I mean they are still making millions of dollars 😂) performance, you take that option and run with it.

I do think the benefit of Darnold however is that he affords you the ability to be more aggressive with your draft plan at the top of the draft. With Darnold as a potential “stop gap” on the roster, the Jets can afford to, if they see minimal difference between Wilson, Fields, and Lance... let a team that’s enamored with one of those three (likely Wilson because he’s the hot new toy) trade up into that #2 spot for a crazy package.

- For example: 49ers decide to offer 2021, 2022 1st + 2021, 2022 2nd + 2023 1st (whatever kind of deal that blows them away).

What Darnold allows is for the Jets to trade back with a team like the 49ers for an unbeatable package of picks, while waiting to see when either Fields or Lance go off the board and then trade back up to get the other QB with the appropriate value. Still come away with a net gain for a QB they grade of similar value. Something similar to when the Ravens in 2008 traded down and back up to get Joe Flacco.

However if for some reason that trade up scenario doesn’t work out in their favor, they still have Darnold in tow... and they can claim that keeping him as their starting QB for 2021 was their plan all along. Without Darnold, they might not be able to afford to drop down to whoever would offer them the best deal.
