MikeT14 Presents: 30 for 30 - The Quarterback Rotation in DC

I've got a fun thread idea I have been working on. I think it'll be somewhat controversial, somewhat fun, and mostly just plain sad.

As you may know, Washington released Dwayne Haskins this week, solidifying another bust of a QB pick by this franchise. Since 1993 - the first post-Gibbs season - the Washington franchise has trotted out 30 different quarterbacks to start a game. Depending on the health of Alex Smith, Taylor Heinicke might be #31. So how did the other 30 fare? I plan to rank all 30 different starters, from worst to first, based on their time starting in Washington from the 1993 season to present. My parameters for ranking? Stats, W/Ls, memories, and exasperation of making a decision. Hopefully you can discuss from it. I'd also like to include trivia along the way if I can. Stats were compiled as best as I could. There will be some issues, but it shouldn't hurt the grand scheme of things. Without further ado....

#30 - Mark Sanchez

mark_sanchez_usat.jpg

Start stats:

Year Name Starts Wins Losses Win % Comp % Passing Yards Passing TDs INTs Rushing Yards Rushing TDs Playoff Record
2018 Mark Sanchez 1 0 1 0.0% 42.8% 38 0 2 8 0

Poor Mark. Came into a tough situation after injuries to Smith and McCoy. In his lone start he was pulled for Josh Johnson after barely being able to function as the starter in the game. His time in Washington came as quickly as it went thankfully.

#29 - Cary Conklin - 1993

Year Name Starts Wins Losses Win % Comp % Passing Yards Passing TDs INTs Rushing Yards Rushing TDs
1993 Cary Conklin 2 0 2 0.0% 51.7% 327 3 2 -1 0

I was 6 when Conklin "played", so my memories of him are nonexistent. That said, he didn't win any of his two starts in 1993, and his career was all but done after that.

#28 Jeff George

jeff-george-4f23572d-0147-4d33-888f-0c8f

  SUM 7 1 6     1414 6 9 24 0
Year Name Starts Wins Losses Win % Comp % Passing Yards Passing TDs INTs Rushing Yards Rushing TDs
2000 Jeff George 5 1 4 20.0% 58.2% 1246 6 6 24 0
2001 Jeff George 2 0 2 0.0% 54.8% 168 0 3 0 0

Despite his lack of talent at this point in his career, George's biggest issues also included his arrogance, clashing with Marty and teammates. He was also chosen over Brad Johnson, someone who will obviously be much higher on this list. George was benched following an 0-2 start in 2001.

Hmm. This is my bad, as I wasn't clear enough. This is all since 1993. Bold is one. Rypien played 10 games for this list. He did not win 5 or 6 of them.

Colt McCoy?

That's two.

The others are tough. All three are from before 2010. Bonus as well. None of them started more than 14 games.  All of them were backups before becoming the starter with the team.

You have four of the five. Tim went 1-4.

Collins went 3-0 to close out the season to get us to the playoffs. Tony Banks went 8-6 overall (after starting 0-3) during Marty's lone season.

Yeah, I struggled so hard to come up with 2 more, I don’t know.

#27 John Beck

Hilarious to remember that at one point, Kyle Shanahan stood on the table for this guy. His three starts were full of nothing. He got shut out once, and was sacked 10 times in one of the games. They realized their mistake and he was benched again.

That's the bonus! He went 2-2 despite being the worst of the three Spurrier had that year.
