On the surface it's kind of weird that Keith Williams isn't the WR coach. And what's the difference between Culley's past 'Passing Game Coordinator' and Williams current 'Pass Game Specialist' title/role?

Some curiosities riding on the backs of these hires.

I think it makes sense, should allow him to bounce around between our RBs, TEs, and WRs and simply help guide all the units in superior route running skills. WR coach would limit his ability to bounce around. What’s more I imagine it’s also somewhat a ombination of things. 1) He’s had some DUIs in his history, far less turnover for the room if they get rid of an assistant than the actual unit coach. 2) Probably easier to attract Tee Martin away from the college game with the WR’s coach moniker than simply with an ambiguous pass specialist role 3) It mutually has the potential to benefit both Martin and the team as Martin has greater HC potential moving forward considering he’s got a clean record, he’s got some high profile names also associated with him, and he’s younger. Giving Martin the more defined title better sets him up for a fast track to being an NFL HC.

In terms of the pass game specialist vs pass game coordinator part, I can only guess that the latter is about installation of passing plays in practice, while the former is likely a coach that you can deploy all around in improving the passing attack from a mechanics/detail perspective. I’d assume a pass game coordinator is dealing with the macro of the passing game, while the pass game specialist would be dealing with the micro of the passing game.

... but that’s just an assumption on my part.

@AFlaccoSeagulls I know you'll appreciate this-

Hey he’s not our coach anymore, I feel no need to defend him any longer- he already got us a 3rd round pick, so I’m good. 😂

I’ll side with Steve Smith Sr here. That’s messed up IMO, how do you turn away a guy who is at the PB. I think a real coach in that situation would relish the opportunity to see a young rookie develop while around some other PB level players. You can’t beat that kind of opportunity. I’d be salty if I were SSSr as well. I can see if you were taking away from the reps of the actual players, but they were down a guy, stupid decision by Culley IMO, sounds like it was a power trip type thing there.

Yeah it's hard to say honestly. Could just be that each guy had a different idea of what the 'better' title was and so Martin preferred the more traditional title while Williams sees it as good for his career progression to get a 'specialist' title. I would think/hope that the idea is for the two of them to work pretty closely given Martin's experience as an OC and Williams' experience coaching WR's.

Maybe I'm just reading into it what I want to see but I like the general optics here of adding two coaches here rather than one and basically giving Williams a wider mandate across the passing game . Could be that Harbaugh felt Culley was stretched too thin - coaching WR's, taking on senior staff responsibilities as Assistant Head Coach, and also trying to be the passing game coordinator - to do every one of those jobs to the level we needed. So he's basically breaking it up into two positions to make sure both individual WR development and the broader passing scheme needs get the attention they deserve.

Such a late switch. Feel like that’s not the smartest move. Michigan feels like one more season away from all of those coaches looking for new jobs.

Though I suppose if they turn that program around that would be Weiss best bet at earning a HC opportunity moving forward. Very risky career move though.

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see who we get to replace him. Especially so late in the process when most staffs are settled. Seems like we’ll have to reach from the college ranks.

Weiss worked his way up from basically being Harbaugh's coffee and errand boy to RB coach and seemingly just moved around positions depending on where a need was on staff - you'd have to assume he's someone Harbs thinks highly of, but he also probably hit his ceiling on the Ravens staff. I'd imagine that a QB coaching gig gives him a better shot at getting in the mix for OC jobs. I'm sure he's a good coach to have risen up the ranks with us the way he has but in terms of how it'll impact our RB's I'm not particularly worried.

Yeah looking it over it looks like Michigan recruited the #4 QB in HS football. I suppose he’s looking to attach himself to the development of him and using that as his launching pad into an OC/HC job- if things work out for Michigan.

That Michigan program is cratering though, so bold move on his part.

Oh, I agree. Though, if they turn things around this season, it’s very possible that the newcomers that just joined from our staff could receive a lot of the credit. Also reading a few articles (since I don’t truly watch college football, but simply scout it for Ravens prospects), it seems like one of Michigan’s biggest issues has been their development of QBs. Apparently their previous QB coach was quite bad.

Turning things around and them finally developing a QB under his watch would probably be one of the biggest ways he could transform himself into a “hot commodity” type coaching candidate... considering it’s history.
