Mock draft thread

Recommended Posts

I jumped on TDN to do a quick mock while I was waiting for a client meeting to begin. It got to the 3rd pick and the Lions offered me their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th for #3. I accepted the trade and got Lance at 7, then traded up for Farley at #33 and got Tryon at #43. The Lions took Sewell at #3.

I didn't get to finish because the meeting started and I accidently closed my browser tab when I had to share my screen. Would've been fun to see what I could've done with a ton more picks in that scenario.

@Forge  Also willing to hear from anyone else.

I'm handling the Niners on another site in a mock. Was hoping to get your feedback on a couple things. Probably asking later than I should since we're in the 3rd round, but....

First, biggest team needs? I perceive it to be QB/DT/WR/IOL depth/CB depth/Edge depth/S depth. Am I way off?

Secondly, trying to get a feel for their type at Edge. They seem to have a mash-up of various builds and weights on that depth chart. Hard reading a type. I'm assuming some are for 3-4 looks, some for a 4 man front.

Last, curious under new DC Demeco Ryans if you know of an obvious preference between man v. zone heavy CBs?

So far I took Fields at 3.

Traded back in 2nd (gained 4.5 and moved up from 6.10 into the 5th). Then selected S Richie Grant. Looked like BPA to me, but I could have gone a lot of ways with that pick.

In short I've added Fields, Grant, and 4.5

Where should I go from here?

DT isn't really a need i would say.

For edge we basically have different packages and a guy like Arik Armstead is a base edge but a interior rusher. While guys like Dee Ford don't play in the base package but are purely sub package edge rusher. So we don't really have one type of edge and probably never will unless we get a second Bosa who can do it all at a high level. One of the biggest needs in my eyes you haven't listed is TE and probably a CB that can compete with Moseley for the starting job(seeing your next pick is end of the third that ship probably sailed and the real options for that are pretty limited in my book. S depth isn't really that big of a need but l think Grant is fine in a small trade down alltough personally don't think he will play year one unless both Tartt and Ward get injured(altough chances of that happening are quite high looking at their past). Also we will probably add a RB since the guys we have also are quite injury prone and outside of Mostert and Wilson haven't proved much.

I would think we stay with a similar scheme we have used and that is more zone heavy but not really a typical sit back zone but more the match and press looks Seattle also uses(we have diversified from just cover 3).

In general though i would say BPA and there really isn't a spot i wouldn't grab someone outside of S since you already added one on top off a group that already feel pretty stacked to me and DT unless the value gets insane offcourse. Then the specialists and FB are pretty much set too so those would be off the board for me too.

Thanks. I wasn't too sure about DT, but I'll throw that on the back-burner. I knew CB was listed as a need many places. But looking at the depth chart myself it didn't look dire with the main group and young additions. Then again, I know Verrett has quite the injury history. Trust me, it's a top 2 priority for me from here on out. Also Richie Grant has the added versatility of being able to play some nickel. See: senior bowl or a good Youtube show (probably shouldn't mention Raider-focused) called "Tape Don't Lie". The one dude is a former safety whose opinion I do value.

Also definitely won't go 3 more picks without adding to the OL group. Thinking in one order or another the next 3 are likely CB, WR, IOL.

And good pointing out RB. I kind of forgot to list that. I'll look for a late value guy there. We own the 5th round so that's a likely target area.

Moseley has been really up and down and isn't a guy i would say deserves to be an unquestioned starter. Verrett is great when healthy but his history hasn't been great and inside Williams is great but also quite frequently banged up. Then you have Johnson who most fans aren't big fans of. Decent depth but not a guy anyone is thrilled about when he actually has to play. Outside of that its mostly unknowns so they can be good or they can suck. I don't know how the board fell and outside a few guys i don't think CB's in the 2nd are going to be that different than ones going much later so while in an ideal world a guy like Asante Samuel is there at our 2nd pick in reality it won't be that way and that second wave just doesn't really do much for me personally over guys that regularly are available around our 3rd.

Here is my aggressive mock draft from TDN:

#4: Justin Fields, QB - The Falcons gave me their 3rd this year and 3rd next to swap firsts and take Pitts. Weird, but thanks!

#34: Kadarius Toney, WR - Moved up 9 spots for my guy

#54: Asante Samuel, CB - Moved up 14 spots from the Falcons' 3rd to grab an impact corner

#66: Tommy Tremble, TE - He was sliding and I had to get him. Moved up 36 spots to grab the next Jordan Reed.

#117: Hamilcar Rashed, EDGE - Sat patiently and he fell to our 4th round pick. Couldn't be happier.

#172: Dayo Odeyingbo, EDGE - BPA, honestly. Hated the value of IOL and CB, so took an EDGE that will redshirt a year. Not a fan of this move, typically, but the board was not in my favor.

#180: Jaelon Darden, WR - Took him about 10-15 picks too early, but this was my last pick of the draft and his skills are too good to pass up. Plus all my favorite CB's were gone and the IOL board was awful.

Adding Fields, Toney, and Tremble to our offense is just unfair for the rest of the league, but would be so beautiful to watch.

If the draft played out like this, hard to not be satisfied.

Yeah, sign me up for this. I don’t think Toney or A.Samuel drop to those spots, but those are obvious picks if they do

The Collaborative Mock I did for San Fran on another site went like this:

1 (3) Justin Fields - QB

2(27) Richie Grant - S

4 (5) Kary Vincent Jr - CB

4(12) Hunter Long - TE

5(11) Robert Hainsey - RT/C

5(25) Cornell Powell - WR

5(28) D'Ante Smith - LT/G

5(36) Thomas Graham Jr - CB

7 (2) Chauncey Golston - DE

We usually do a couple UDFA rounds afterwards. Probably add a WR and TE to try and steal a spot in camp. Think it makes you better??

My Top 10 right now:

1. Jags: Trevor Lawrence, QB - Pretty confident in this pick

2. Jets: Zach Wilson, QB - Pretty confident in this pick

3. 49ers: Trey Lance, QB - Pretty confident in this pick

4. Falcons: Kyle Pitts, TE - Pretty confident in this pick

5. Bengals: Ja'Marr Chase, WR - Pretty confident in this pick

6. Dolphins: Penei Sewell, OT - Pretty confident in this pick

7. Patriots (via Lions): Justin Fields, QB - I feel like this is a strong possibility

8. Chargers (via Panthers): RaShawn Slater, OT - I feel like this is a strong possibility

9. Broncos: Patrick Surtain, CB - This could happen if they get stuck in no-man's land

10. Ravens (via Cowboys): Jaylen Waddle, WR - Total guess, but it's been said that the Ravens are really looking for a WR.
