Has there ever been a more transparent tank job?

what a compelling argument you make

Oh the irony.

"There has been so much backlash that the media would've forced the Eagles and Sudfeld to come forth and show his exact contract to ease the minds of conspiracy theorists".

What a story!

No Eagles fans care or feel sorry and no Eagles players care either regardless of whatever bull crap stories come out.. It was a lost season and we don't care to help out the Giants.

Edit: This might not end well for Doug even though he probably wasn't the one behind it

Yes, we would have.

We heard about Antonio Brown's incentives. We heard about David Moore's incentives. This information came out for other players.

The eagles are getting blasted by the media and by a lot of fans out there. If there was incentives for Nate that were achieved by his horrendous performance, we would have heard about it.

Lets stop making this part of some larger conspiracy. This was very simple. It was the eagles tanking. Thats it.

I already tried barking up this tree. Save yourself the effort.

Seriously though (and I want a legitimate answer for this direct question), what’s your best guess of the incentive milestone they were trying to achieve with Sudfeld?

I'm not sure what's hard to argue....

1.  Teams tank all the time.   The thing is, they tank by sitting guys, trading guys, going with the "rookie who needs a look to decide their future".  Players & coaches get it.  They don't like it, but they get it.

2.  Teams don't tank in-game so blatantly - because the players & coaches (except in this case) generally understand they're there to still go out, and try 100 percent to win the game.  You give them less ammo, fine.   It is what it is.  But the guys go out there with the thought "we've still got a chance, and we're going to do everything we can to win".

3.  Asking players to play hurt, out of position, etc. - it's because they're being asked to risk themselves for the team W.

All of that works - so long as the team believes that the coaches & players will work together to try and win.  It's how the Jets won 2x even though everyone knew the org was hoping they'd do what it took to get 1.1 and Lawrence.     Players & coaches understand the business side of losing helping the org - but it's not supposed to happen in-game.

The hard part here - Sudfeld is in his 4th year.  He's not under contract for 2021.  His very presence on the team for 3 years is what led to Jalen Hurts being drafted.   So there's no angle that the players can swallow.   This is why the Eagles players are upset now.

I get why the org would back this.   But to say it's normal, and it's not without consequences, fails to appreciate the differences here.   And yes, because it's the last game, on national TV, it's under the microscope.  No, it's not the first time, nor will it be the last.   But it was done so ham-handedly, and in-game with a switch that can't be rationally defended as legitimate - that's why it's getting such furor from the players.   You don't hear about it from the Jets or the Jaguars, or other teams that sat their vets (and certainly not from teams that sat them for playoff prep), because it wasn't live, in-game, and with such a switch that had no future purpose in player evaluation.

Pederson likely did this with the org's backing - right up to the part about even hinting at it pre-game, during the week.    The problem is that the move was so transparent, and clearly aimed at reducing their chances of winning a very winnable game - that it broke the trust players & coaches have in-game.  That's a tough bridge to fix - really, if PHI goes out winning early, this gets forgetten.   If they struggle though, the lack of trust between players & Pederson will come to a head.   Winning fixes a lot of locker room problems - but losing tends to bring them out to the limelight.

Well, if the players are coming out publicly, they kinda feel it is a big deal.

Players, former players - hard to ignore.

Of course, that Eagles players are pissed, shows that there was major miscommunication somewhere. There were articles that said Sudfeld would play. Why is everyone so surprised?

Probably true, but still, why are Eagles players so upset? Even if they want to be competitive, they should know the end result helps them.

Because players are always playing for their contract.  That's the effect of the NFL salary structure.  They always want to have as much good game tape as possible.

That's some losing the locker room talk right there.

Very brave of him to say as he was on the bench to avoid injuries.

It was very obvious from the time the injury report came out and the non-stop rumors that Sudfeld would play the second half what was going to happen.

So... do no Eagles players care or do they?

Joe Judge said it all, really. He acknowledged that it was the Giants' own fault they didn't get to the playoffs, but he also couldn't ignore the implications of what Pederson was doing.

"There's a number of sacrifices that have been made by all the players and coaches in this league. To disrespect the effort that everyone put forward to make this season a success, to disrespect the game by going out there and not competing for 60 minutes and [not] doing everything you can to help those players win... we will never do that as long as I'm head coach of the New York Giants."
