Yep he just gave dead cap #s, not cost versus savings.  This is how the salary cap in the NFL works.

Dead cap is what kills you.

Paying players who are not on the team major money is literally just waste.

30 million in 2022 cap was spent last offseason.

I don't think Quinn being a bust is set in stone.   He was one of best defenders in league in 2019.

A lot of people didn't think 2020 season was going to happen and didn't train accordingly.   A lot of times players don't train adequately in their free agent year.

He could be dealing with injuries we don't know about.

He could bounce back and surprise.

Foles saves 7M (he wont be here anyhow so this a moot point).  Quinn 6.7M.  Trevathan 2.9 cap hit. Cohen cost a bag of chips--not even sure why he is even included here.

It does not matter what they save.

30 million is gone because of 2020 spending. That 30 million is not coming back it is literally set on fire.

Lots of 30 year old guys bounce back... Most of the time when you are over 30 and you start to fall apart it is over. That is why the average age in the NFL is mid 20s.

And opens up another need for another EDGE. It's not actual savings.

People made this argument about signing Jimmy Graham too. He'll likely be cut this offseason and the Bears will be paying 3M for him next season.

Burning cap space is burning cap space.

I wanted to keep Floyd on a 1 year prove it deal (13M) but I wasn't against the Quinn signing and I don't think anyone saw him declining as much as he has this season. Hopefully he bounces back next year.

Just saying it isn't a done deal.    It was an odd year.

20 year old guys are cheaper as well.   Why there is more of them.

It does matter. Alot. Even much more than the dead cap. That's part of what the salary cap is based on.

It also wouldn't be first time a guy mailed it in first year following FA.  Happens in all sports.

In 2022 the Bears will be paying Quinn, Trevathan and Foles 25 million dollars.

That is likely over 10% of the salary cap on players who will be sitting on their couch.

Ryan Pace dedicated 10-12% of the 2022 salary cap to Quinn, Trevathan and Foles.

That means in 2022 no matter what happens the Bears will have 10% less cap space than they should.

Should we allow him to spend even more of the 2022 cap space? Because that 10% might as well be set on fire.

He went from being best he has ever been to being about worst he has ever been.

That is due to injury or inadequate prep or both.   Not just age.   You see fat guys fall off a cliff more often, but Quinn is more slight.

That's a bit of an overstatement. But he's past 30 and got paid. It wouldn't be the 1st time a guy got paid and rapidly declined.
