Dreadful Season Over Mock

Jets Hire Brian Daboll at their new HC. I had him as our HC hire in my 1st mock (I did a mock every 4 games this year). He's a guy that knows winning (NE and Bama ties) as well as he's already been a coach with the Jets before. He also looks like JD so we will have 2 top guys who look similar ;)

He brings his QB coach Ken Dorsey over with him as our OC.

Cuts (notable)

Henry Anderson

Alex Lewis

GVR

Resign (notable)

Brian Poole

Marcus Maye

Pat Elflein

Free Agency (after cuts and re-signings we have around 90 million in cap space)

Chris Godwin (WR): A guy no one has really talked about that's hitting the market. TB has cap space (30mill), but has a ton of guys they need to pay. Godwin finds himself as the odd man out. They actually don't need him. I see them bringing back AB for cheap rather than keeping Godwin. Godwin is still young and can be the #1 guy we need. A great do it all WR for our new QB. I think even if you don't agree with this... we are getting a WR somehow here. JuJu, Golladay, Davis, etc. We will be getting a close to #1 WR in FA somehow. He's also from Philly so getting back to the area might help as well.

Marlon Mack (RB): Injured but has talent. So he won't cost a ton. We can't go into the draft with just Johnson, Perine and Adams (weak RB group). So we have to sign someone in FA. Mack is that guy and is cheap and still young.

Joe Thuney (OG): I think JD wanted him bad this last offseason, but he got tagged. He won't get tagged this next year and I think we get him. This makes the left side of our OL great. Even if we can't get him. We will get the next best OG on the market. This spot will be addressed IMO. Daboll has coached Thuney and that can only help.

Bud Dupree (Edge): Pitt has to let guys go bc of a rough cap situation. They can't tie up a ton of cap in both Dupree and Watt down the road. We overpay... but get our edge we've all been wanting. Like WR, I think we get someone here. If you don't think Dupree is happening, we will still get someone very good here.

Gerald Everett (TE): Just adding a TE that has talent. LAR have cap issues and already have Higbee. So they pretty much have to let Everett walk.

Trade

We trade Darnold to Detroit for their 3rd and a conditional 2022 pick based on starts. Darnold just isn't going to net us what we all hope. But with his 5th year option due. We can't keep him around.

NFL Draft

1. Justin Fields (QB/Ohio State) I'm not as high on Wilson as others and I like that Fields is more proven against higher level of competition. He has a great arm and can move. With Daboll and Dorsey as our new staff... I think they make him a franchise QB. And we unlike our previous countless QBs we've drafted... will take care of him with a good OL and give him weapons.

1. (from SEA) Jaycee Horn (CB/ South Carolina) Continuing to build that young secondary. Immediately is a starting outside CB for us with Hall and Austin battling for the other outside spot. With an elite CB in the slot. This gives us a very good group that's young and is talented from CB 1-4.

2. Najee Harris (RB/Alabama) One of my favorite players in the whole draft. He can do it all. I personally have him as the best RB in the draft but a lot still think Eteinne will go before him. TBH I'd be happy with either since they're both very talented and can run, catch and block. He starts for us with Mack mixing in. With a talented OL now. Running the ball is big. And this can only help Fields.

3. Tylan Wallace (WR/Oklahoma State) Isn't going to wow you with any big quality... but gets the job done. Reminds me a bit of Cotchery in the play style. He can battle it out to be our 4th WR.

3. (from DET) Jayson Oweh (Edge/Penn State) Hurt his draft stock this year with no sacks on the season. But he has tools. This is a pick based on potential. I also think this is an area JD likes drafting Edges and hopes to catch lightning in them. If nothing else he can be a rotational Edge with Dupree, Huff and Zuniga.

3. (from SEA) Drake Jackson (IOL/Kentucky) Creating the OL pipeline where there's depth and battling for spots. McGovern is still the starting C. But Jackson provides depth behind him as well as depth at OG as well. Let the best guys play at C and RG.

4. Amari Rodgers (WR/Clemson) I know some think he will go way before this, but I don't. He's tiny and I think falls. Crowder is on the last year of his contract and Rodgers looks to take that spot potentially after 2021. Once again just adding more talent and depth at a position we need.

5. Alaric Jackson (OT/Iowa) Talented OT that adds more depth and talent for us at OT and creates that pipeline and positional battle for best player to play.

5. (from NYG) Amari Gainer (LB/Florida State) A do it all LB. Can actually line up all over the place as a LB, Pass rusher and even S at times. A jack of all trades weapon for us.

6. Leon O'Neal Jr (SS/Texas A&M) Good do it all S. Can play both FS and SS, but is better at SS. Great tackler who plays with passion.

7. Brent Cimaglia (K/Tennessee): Mann and Cimaglia will give us one of the best young ST specialists in the NFL.

So for me in this we fix A LOT. We totally change the look of the offense. Pretty much with 2/3 of it being new. And add a lot of nice new young pieces on defense as well.

On Offense

We get us a new QB in Fields and finally pair them with a talented coaching staff, protection and weapons. This of course if the focus of the offseason. On the OL... an OL of Becton, Thuney, McGovern, Eflein, Fant is very good. There's also loads of depth behind it to create competition in the 2 Jacksons getting drafted and Clarke and Edoga still here. At RB we remake the backfield in getting Harris as a focal point and adding depth behind him in Mack. Harris should really shine with us. At TE we add Tonyan he showed he's legit and can be a great red zone target for Fields. WR where we needed the most help, we remake the group. Adding a #1 option in Godwin and adding depth with Wallace and Rodgers. A group of Godwin, Crowder, Mims, Wallace and Rodgers is now a strength for us.

On Defense

We finally get a star edge that we've needed for a long time in Dupree. We go one step further there as well in drafting Oweh to create that competition for our other starting Edge (battle between Oweh, Zuniga and Huff) This is a position that it's great to have depth and rotation at as well. At CB we add a starting CB in Horn. With the way I did FA (I addressed Edge, OG, WR and TE) CB is the biggest need for us come that pick. There's now a good amount of young talent in that secondary that should only get better (Hall, Austin, Davis, Poole, Maye). Our LB group with Mosley coming back isn't a huge need IMO. That's why I waited to draft a guy there. I think we resign a guy like Peanut for cheap and we will be good there. On the DL I think we are set there with Q, JFM, Foley and others. That's why I didn't touch that group.

For me this team can compete and it's a step in the right direction for this team.

QB: Fields

RB: Harris, Mack

WR: Godwin, Mims, Crowder, Wallace, Rodgers

TE: Everett, Herndon

LT: Becton

LG: Thuney

OC: McGovern

RG: Eflein

RT: Fant

IDL: Williams, Franklin Myers, Fatukasi, Phillips

Edge: Dupree, Huff, Oweh, Zuniga

LB: Mosley, Hewitt, Cashman, Peanut, Gainer

CB: Horn, Hall, Poole, Austin, Jackson

S: Maye, Davis, O'Neal, Farley

K: Cimaglia

P: Mann

I like your thinking. I will wait to comment on Fields until after Jan 11. If Horn is there with the Seattle pick - hell yeah.  I have a hard time thinking Rodgers will last to 4th. I like Najee and if we must pick a RB that high, he is my choice.

As for FA, I like Dupree but I would be concerned about his contract both length and $. I would much rather draft our EDGE.  Oweh is OK. Why have Mack and Harris? I would be good with Harris and Ty or Ty and Mack for 2021.

We have money and don't need to pay anyone for a while bc we haven't drafted well. So the money and years I'm not worried about with any of our FAs.

I pointed to why we would sign Mack. I try and make my mocks realistic. And realistically thinking... I don't see us going into the draft with Ty Johnson and Perine as our RBs. So we sign someone. Mack is cheap and coming off injury. He would get a 1 year cheap deal. I think he's insurance for us (Johnson and Perine are not proven starters regularly). But we do plan on drafting a RB. I question more if Harris will be there at 34 more so then the pick. But I do think one of Etienne of Harris will be there. I can't see both going in the top 33. I'd be happy with either. We in turn cut someone (probably Johnson). And roll with Harris, Mack and Perine.

It is not even all about the $ with Dupree. I worry his production will drop off leaving us with an underwhelming player at high cost. We have been bitten too many times before. I know we have a lot of $ and need to spend some and if Dupree can deal with a 3 year contract with an out after two, go for it. All this assumes, of course, he is medically cleared.

I like Mack. I think he, Ty and Perine are a decent backfield for now. If JD really wants a top RB this draft, then forget Mack and run with Harris/Sermon, Ty and Perine. Not the biggest fan of Eteinne. The few games I saw he was less than stellar. He fumbles a bit as well.

Honestly the only thing that scares me with Fields is that OSU QBs don't really do much in the NFL. But I think hes better than those other guys, definitely way better than Haskins.

Zach Wilson looks like Patrick Mahomes, insane arm talent. The problem is will he have a Andy Reid to coach him?

As an unbiased observer, I'm really excited about the potential offseason for you guys. Lots of different directions you could go. With that said, I was curious how you rate the state of your offensive line? Are Fant and McGovern actually good? And I know he was injured this year, but I thought Alex Lewis was playing really well last year when he was healthy?

Lewis is trash and will be cut. We picked up Pat E. and he will start at one of the G spots. Fant will be brought back as a starter or swing T depending on if we up grade the RT spot.

Lewis was solid last season then hit a brick wall and completely fell off at the end of the year and was abysmal this year.  Fant and McGovern are not worries for me.  I would much rather spend money and draft picks on other positions.  If we can get a Guard like Thuney and then resign Elflein and move him to RG then I really like our line.  If we don't get Thuney and we don't resign Elflein then we need a lot of Guard help.

Fant had a good start to the year. GVR next to him played awful all season, which does affect the guy next to you.

McGovern started playing better as the season went on. Eflein  once brought in helped his play at C. So I think we will resign Eflein and still have McGovern and Becton obviously. Fant has a very cutable contract for us this offseason. So I’m sure if there’s a chance to upgrade there JD will. But there’s no bog hole there

I like this offseason. I think you’re right about Godwin. He’s probably the one top WR that sneaks away. He’d pair well with Mims and Crowder. Mims is not ready for that number 1 spot. So getting a top WR puts him as the 3rd option which would be best for his development.

Im a big fan of Najee Harris and think the 2nd round is a great spot for RB. With that OL, he’ll make life easier for our QB.

The only thing I would question is trading Darnold. I’m leaning towards keeping him (don’t pick up the option of course). Let Fields sit a year. I’d rather have Darnold than a 3rd. If we can get a 1st or 2nd, then yes trade him. But we’re at best getting a 3rd.

In general, this is the type of offseason I’m expecting. Not too wild in FA. 2 or 3 high quality players (Godwin, Thuney, and Dupree). And a couple more Fant type of moves (Mack, Tonyan).

Thanks for putting Robert Tonyan on my radar. We have got to add a TE. I’m not familiar with him. But seems like the kind of guy I would like us to get. Going to watch him a bit.

Going to switch Gerald Everett in for Tonyan. I didn't know Tonyan was  RFA. Might not make a difference. I just think it make it more realistic.

I mean, unless you're willing to pony up a pick for him that's probably a good idea.  At the very least, the Packers probably slap a SRP tender on him.  Maybe even a FRP tender on him.  I'd probably throw a SRP tender on him, and see if a team is willing to cough up a pick for him.
