What should the Eagles do at QB?

Aside from the Wentz situation, I think the Eagles QB situation is one of those most questionable stories going into next season. We can all assume they trade Wentz if someone is willing to take on the contract, but what about Hurts? Is he the answer? The Eagles are picking #6 in the draft. Do they try and steal a QB or try and trade up?

Trade Wentz. Set fire to 2021 cap as much as possible without spilling into 2022, roll with Hurts to see if there is something there...Draft Howell, Slovis, whomever is at the top of the 2022 draft if necessary.  Hard one year reset. Teams have done this recently and been successful soon following. The dolphins carried nearly 35% of their cap as dead money last year. The 49ers did something similar in 2017 where it ended up being like 30% or something. For the eagles, it will likely be even way more, but this is an aging roster that has potential issues post 2021 because of the voided years that will hit in 2022 after guys play out their contract (Malik Jackson, Brandon Graham, Jason Kelce for example are not under contract in 2022 yet will account for 8 million (jackson), 7.2 (Kelce), and a little over 12 million on their cap for that year. That's 27 million in dead money already in 2022 if they don't bounce those guys in 2021.

Yep

2021 is a lost cause regardless. Start over with a culture change, get rid of Wentz, and limp into 2022...and I wouldn't even fault them if they nuked the team and kept a few pieces to get ready for a complete roster overhaul in 2022.

That said, based upon Pederson and their GM's statements on Sunday, I think they keep Wentz, which is the wrong decision.

Its so weird because 2019 and 2020 teach opposite lessons about Wentz.

In 2019 he was worth every penny of an extension because he elevated a very weak offense and got them to the playoffs.

In 2020 he was so awful from go that he blew a 17 point lead in week 1 where if he took a knee and punted every drive instead of throwing picks they would have won easy.

Its not an exaggeration to say Wentz was top 10 in the 2020 LVP race. (if that was a thing)

He has also not been reliable in 4 of 5 seasons through injury or incompetence.

I thought about this Hurts can still be a flash in the pan and still has demonstrated the flashes to garner good compensation.

I'm not sure but if there's a a QB they fall in love with totally.

Wentz is their best QB, so I’d try to actually give him pieces to work with. Granted the entire relationship is sour and probably can’t be rebuilt at this point.

Thats my biggest problem though..how do you do that with the current and pending cap situation they have while also maintaining him? It's legitimately a disaster for at least 1 year, maybe 2.

It makes very little sense to move on from Wentz right now. They lose nothing by keeping him and playing him in 2021. If he bombs, the team was doomed anyway. Nothing lost. If he redeems himself you either have MUCH better trade value, or you decide to roll with him.

Smart decision is to plan on Wentz being your starter in 2021. It's always dumb to sell low.

You keep what you have, and work out who the starter is in training camp. Hurts is young and can still grow and develop. Wentz had a bad year, but he's shown before that he can be highly effective. You don't move on from former MVP candidate after one (really) bad season.

After another year if Wentz doesn't show improvement, and/or Hurts doesn't show enough, then you look for a new long-term solution.

This is easy for a fan to say. If you are the coach whose job may be lost, not so much.

The coach shouldn't have a say. that should be on the front office. They aren't getting better. Howie has them strung up for the next year and maybe 2. Their contracts are possibly the worst in sports.

And like I said, other GMs and front offices have recently done it and had success with it. So it's not just a fan thing. Depends on how Howie feels about his own job security as those guys were turning it over so it's not apples to apples unless Howie feels really damn good about sticking around.

A whole bunch more in real cash and a 39 million dollar cap hit in 2022 would suggest otherwise.
