Spinning Tires: Steelers 2021 Offseason and Beyond...

Seeming like this was a bad year for JuJu to hit FA. Cap gets stalled, another good class of rookies, and the guys above him in the FA pool both have huge question marks.

This can’t be the start to free agency he was hoping for.

Ian Rappaport believes be will sign a 1 year contract. I hope it's with us, but sadly I don't expect it to be.

Woof

I mean, it hurts, but...

Williams wasnt nearly as good after Bush went down.

Alualu is 34 and kind of faded down the stretch.

Losing Hilton hurts, but Sutton should get an expanded role and is a notably better cover corner than Hilton.

Losing Dupree hurts, but as good as he has been the last two years, is not worth what he got paid.   He is to TJ Watt what Woodley was to Harrison and Haggans was to Porter.    He is a better overall athlete than the other 2, but he is not a stand alone star.   Highsmith showed nice glimpses last year, and he doesnt necessarily need to be as good as Dupree was for him to have success.

Losing Alualu arguably hurt the most because we have no immedate replacement, where we do have decent replacements for the others already on the roster.

And obviously, the depth suffers all around.

@43M I agree with all of your points but still when you look at it...

Leaving: Villanueva, Pouncey, Conner, Feiler, JuJu, Vance, Dupree, Alualu, Hilton, Vince Williams

Incoming: Finney

Thats a hell of a lot of talent and leadership to fill in one off-season with essentially no cap-room.

leadership

I don’t discount anything you said in your comment, but I do want to touch on this word.

We have two straight playoff embarrassments and constant playing down to opponents. Coaching plays it’s role, but in terms of team leadership...it may be time to turn that leaf over.

If he signs a 1 year deal you’ve gotta think it will be with us.

Maybe that’s why the Steelers haven’t made any significant moves yet.

I'd be ecstatic. I get all the reasons many fans don't want him back but man, it would be in his best interest imo even if we ended up losing him next season but next season we'd have the ability to offer more.

I think a one year works against us. No way for us to be flexible with cap hit and I can’t see a guy thinking $16m accepting $4m.

I do think a short term deal works in his favor. Still very young and can be back in the mix for the 2023 cap explosion. Give him a 2-3 year at a solid, but not great rate and get flexible with the cap hit.

3 years with a voidable 3rd year.

Well, I think we all expected a huge turnover over the next few years.

They chose to keep Ben another year over retaining a few of those guys.

I fully expected this team to change drastically.   I thought maybe we would retain Villanueva and Williams, but....

I fully expected Dupree to walk, and so did our front office.

I wasnt sure we would pay Juju huge money given our ability to find quality WRs.

Pouncey has significantly regressed since Munch left, so its not a huge loss IMO.

I knew we would lose either Hilton or Sutton.

Vance McDonald was a wasted roster spot the last 2 years.

Alualu doesnt have much time left either way, but I hoped we could keep him.

Conner wasn't dependable.

Bottom line...I didnt expect to lose quite as many players, but with the cap stagnation and keeping Ben....Im not shocked.

It’s a stretch to say we’ve lost in the playoffs because of bad leadership. We’ve mainly lost because of Tomlin and Ben. Pouncey, Williams, and Dupree were all invaluable leaders on the team. And it’s more than just leadership, it’s continuity, playing for the guys around you etc.

I’m not saying turning the leaf, getting some young bloods in here, and having guys like Minkah, TJ, Bush, Highsmith etc step into those roles will be a bad thing, just pointing out that’s a huge chunk of a team to be subtracting all at one time.

Definitely. It wasn’t the only reason. But I keep seeing that word all over these players and thinking back at scenarios I think leadership from players should play a role...I just gotta ask, did we actually have good leaders? Because we fell down continuously in a lot of similar situations - something I think true leadership would be focused on correcting. Sleep walking through games against a 2 win team is something, IMO, that should happen once and that one time should wake you up for every other occurrence. It happened all the time with us. To me, that’s a lack of internal leadership.

I’m not definitively saying it is or is not anything. I’ll have no real idea having never been in the Locker room. But i do wonder if this loss of “leadership” might be a good thing.
