Divisional Round GDT: Ravens at Bills

Yeah but having another good WR would help too. Nobody except Hollywood has a chance of shedding their man.

This is true.

Maybe this is one of those Robert Frost (the author) type situations where the only way out is through with regard to Roman. Perhaps if we draft a Chris Olave in the 1st round, it will a) allow our WRs a chance to out talent the opposition, since they won’t be schemed open... and b) If DeCosta drafts a WR in round 1 there will be a ton of pressure to use him and often... meaning we should, in theory, be forcing Roman to use the tools that will best help this offense ie 3 WR sets.

The OL doesn’t look nearly as bad if Stanley/Brown are the bookends. So all we need is a next level piece inside and with this being probably the best IOL class I’ve ever scouted, I think we can better afford to gamble with a few falling to the 2nd/3rd round of the draft.

It’ll be hard to keep the defense this good- and intact, but when your offense only musters -4 points in a playoff game, who really cares. Do what you need to do to improve the offense before Lamar is ruined.

We need an offensive evolution. I’m still all in on the Lamar era but I’d like to see us run some actual pass plays sometimes

Exactly. These things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Lamar at Louisville with 4 WR 1 TE sets was balling out, yet one of the worse takes ever came in Lamar’s MVP season where people credited the Ravens with “building the perfect offense around Lamar for his unique skillset” Sure he won unanimous MVP but most of that was off surprise and overwhelming talent. Teams now have a plan for Lamar’s talent... and Roman can’t keep up.

The Ravens defense had a plan for Allen’s talent, but their offensive coaching staff was able to continuously build their offense every season to optimally fit their QB. They were able to grow his mind and build an offense around that. Lamar is just a football player right now, he needs someone that can teach him what to look out for.

I wonder if Kurt Warner would be interested in an offensive coordinator role... and I’m dead serious, he can’t do much worse than what we already have there in scheming up a passing attack.

a week ago guys wanted Stanley to be traded in the offseason. funny how one game changes perspective huh.

you absolutely need to keep both Stanley and Brown, heck why would anybody consider getting rid of a bookend tackle when you hit on 2?

you also need to keep Ngakoue. keep this D together as it is, they played lights out when it mattered the most.

Tell Roman to design a balanced offense or be downgraded to position coach and spend your draft picks on O.

and for the record: team improved on last years result by getting to the divisional round. lets make it to the AFCCG next year.

We can bring back Bowser, McPhee, and Ward on the cheap. That'll make a decent crew with Ferguson.

Would it?  We'd either need to blitz twice as much as we did this year or it'd resembled the Titans' pass rush of this year

I know it’s just an error I’m sure, but we actually lost in the divisional round last season as well. It’s just we had a bye week, so we skipped the wildcard round.

In terms of Stanley, I still think we should consider trading Stanley, I don’t trust his durability. He was always playing banged up before this injury, I’m not sure how much I trust him to hold up after getting paid what he got paid. But we’ll see. I think taking a guy like Alex Leatherwood in the draft could give us that flexibility. IIRC he won the Outland trophy and would likely excel at either OG or RT, having excelled at OG as an underclassman and excelled as a LT as an upperclassman.

Along with drafting a Pat Freiermuth if he falls in the 2nd round, it could insulate us against some of that lost talent we anticipate could come from the OL/TE spots if things don’t work out in our favor in retaining Andrews/Brown Jr, while adding more premium offensive talent to impact the offense.

EDIT: And can’t forget about Hollywood, he’s officially inserted himself back into the contract talks conversation IMO with how clutch he’s been in these playoffs. Looks like he’s righted the ship and some of his lack of production could simply be to his utilization and not necessarily his inability to produce.

We’re the Bucks of the NFL. Our offense just beats up on teams in the regular season, but when we get in the playoffs teams shutdown our one dimensional offense. 4 playoff games and our highest scoring game is 20. This offense can’t win in the playoffs.

boy that loss still stings. If we could have mustered 13 points we probably could have won that game. Pathetic showing by the offense.

The bad plays that really hurt were the Mekari's snaps and Lamar's pick.

I can't pin it on Tucker because the Bills kicker was also 1/3.

The Bills scored in the red zone and Lamar threw a pick 6 in the red zone. That's the difference. The Ravens outplayed the Bills between the 20s all game long.

Wouldn't that trigger a huge cap hit? Like $50 million? I don't think we are flush with cap space. The cap could decrease from $199 mil to $175 mil, but it is not settled yet. Not a lot of wiggle room.

I'm just sayin I don't see why we would pay a premium for Judon (6 sacks) or Ngakoue (3 sacks in 9 games) when they don't really produce in this system. For the amount of $ they'll cost, it isn't worth it.

What we need is Lincoln Riley. He gets 1000 rushing yards from his QB every year and manages to do it with a modern passing game. This is probably going to keep happening as long as we’re reliant on blocking specialists at the skill positions.

Bro our passing concepts look like my highschool team back in the day, and we ran the double wing!

We need something. Anything. To juice this passing game.

And Decosta's gotta open the wallet a bit and spend on offence. This isn't 2000 anymore you need weapons and an elite offensive line.

If there's a silver lining, it's that unlike last year it's completely untenable for EDC to just double down on adding defensive pieces and ignoring the offense like he did after the Titans loss last year. Or at least you'd hope so. We were only a couple of really bad plays away from maybe getting out of last night with a win but it would have just papered over the cracks, and with the deep and obvious flaws in the team I don't think we would have been able to ride our luck through 2 more wins anyways. This team simply wasn't good enough.

It's not just personnel either, obviously. Harbaugh needs to come out this week and acknowledge that it hasn't been good enough in the passing game and make staffing changes that reflect that. Running it back with the Roman/Culley system is unacceptable. This is an area where I"m a lot less optimistic.

None of that means letting Lamar off the hook for the improvements he needs to make as a passer too. But the organization needs to evolve and give him a platform from which he can improve. There's just no point in doing this whole thing again next year if we're going to continue caring more about whether our slot receivers can block than whether they can get open or catch a football.
