CKSteeler
Butler doesn't even call the defense. It's been mostly Tomlin per the Pittsburgh media for years now.

Seems like throwing the baby out with the bath water. I know that’s a dumb thing that happens to us from time to time, but I think it’s just something we have to accept with the defense we play. And it generally only bites us a few times.

Maybe he should improve his scheming, because typically, we are the only team doing that stupid crap. Let's stop making excuses for him shall we? Just because the talent on the field is better than the coaching on the sidelines doesn't mean he doesn't need to be replaced and the last 6 games defense, has been atrocious
bionicsuperfreak
The crux is two fold.. I believe Tomlin's record is a byproduct of Kevin Colbert's ability to form teams. This is based in logic. Two rings. SB caliber teams year in and year out. Tomlin's playing down to opponents and playoff disappointments shows he's not a good coach. The proof is in the pudding. Given his inability to make logical decisions..
bionicsuperfreak
Collapses, players willingness to clown, and coaches willingness to leave points to a lack of leadership. No playoff wins in five years, despite the win pct. points to a good TEAM, not a good CULTURE.
bionicsuperfreak
The coach cultivates the culture. The GM forms the helix. You have no backbone, because you have no leadership. That's why you fold like a cheap suit.

We lost two of the most important players on the front seven. Plus the offense was a steaming pile of garbage down the stretch. I understand, people are frustrated. Butler isn’t the best DC of all time, but I don’t think we need to fire him.
CKSteeler
Butler is the defensive coordinator in name only. People can continue to ignore that all they'd like. Any deficiencies in the defense can, particularly when it comes to particularly play calls, can be traced right back to Tomlin.
warfelg
FWIW I'm not excited by the Canada hire. In fact, I think hiring him was a massive mistake.

A couple of things: 1) He consistently is jumping from job to job and doesn't have a long resume at one spot to look at how he changes things over time. Often times he took a "step back" with a new position as well, whether that be quality of program or coaching level. 2) He runs a lot of things out of a ton of different formations. While in a way it's good, it's also bad if you only run certain plays out of certain formations. Much like Fitchner it's quite predictable. Additionally a ton of that shifting and motion action is just eye candy at the NFL level. 3) If this goes well, he's gonna be gone in a year or two for the NCAA or NFL at a HC level gig. I would have rather seen an established NFL level OC that's been a HC and isn't a hot name with some big names working under him bringing the new stuff. 4) Even if he manages to bring a ton of his college concepts to the NFL level it will not work with Ben at QB. Ben cannot move, and isn't versed in RPO reads, which Canada's system is built on.
