Saleh New HC Mock

Recommended Posts

We have just hired Robert Saleh as our HC and Mike LaFleur as our OC.

Cuts (notable)

Henry Anderson

Alex Lewis

GVR

Resign (notable)

Brian Poole

Marcus Maye

Pat Elflein

Free Agency (after cuts and re-signings we have around 90 million in cap space)

Chris Godwin (WR): A guy no one has really talked about that's hitting the market. TB has cap space (30mill), but has a ton of guys they need to pay. Godwin finds himself as the odd man out. They actually don't need him. I see them bringing back AB for cheap rather than keeping Godwin. Godwin is still young and can be the #1 guy we need. A great do it all WR for Darnold. I think even if you don't agree with this... we are getting a WR somehow here. JuJu, Golladay, Davis, etc. We will be getting a close to #1 WR in FA somehow. He's also from Philly so getting back to the area might help as well.

Joe Thuney (OG): I think JD wanted him bad this last offseason, but he got tagged. He won't get tagged this next year and I think we get him. This makes the left side of our OL great. Even if we can't get him. We will get the next best OG on the market. This spot will be addressed IMO.

Bud Dupree (Edge): Pitt has to let guys go bc of a rough cap situation. They can't tie up a ton of cap in both Dupree and Watt down the road. We overpay... but get our edge we've all been wanting. Like WR, I think we get someone here. If you don't think Dupree is happening, we will still get someone very good here. Saleh needs edges for his system to work. And this is a heck of a start to get that edge presence.

Gerald Everett (TE): Just adding a TE that has talent. LAR have cap issues and already have Higbee. So they pretty much have to let Everett walk. The WCO needs good TE play.

NFL Draft

Jets trade the 2nd overall pick to ATL for the 4th overall pick and the 35th and 68th picks. This on the draft trade chart equals out exactly. And teams generally go by this value or close to it.

1.  (from ATL) DeVonta Smith (WR/Alabama) If we want to transform this offense and Darnold we have to invest resources in it. We had a great start to doing that in FA and continue that in the draft. Smith is a star and makes this WR group one of the best in the NFL post FA and Draft now. Godwin, Smith, Mims and Crowder is incredible.

1. (from SEA) Najee Harris (RB/Alabama) One of my favorite players in the whole draft. He can do it all. I personally have him as the best RB in the draft. He can run, catch and block. Typically I'm not big on going 1st Round RB... but he's an exception this late and his skill set. He's just too good to pass up here. Continue to surround Darnold and the offense with weapons.

2. Alex Leatherwood (OL/Alabama) 3 Bama guys in a row? You're darn right. I think JD and Saleh will like his physicality, and that he can play OT or OG. Just creates competition on the OL. He can possibly start over Elf or Fant on the right side. I know some will think there's no way he lasts this long. But its a very deep OL class. So someone is slipping to 34 that's a 1st round OLineman. Maybe Davis here if Leatherwood is gone.

2. (from ATL) Tyson Campbell (CB/Georgia) Big physical corner that will fit in great for Saleh's defense. This young secondary just keeps getting better and better. Saleh can mold these guys into a great group. Hall and Campbell on the outside for years is something to be excited about.

3. Joe Tryon (Edge/Washington) Keep swinging on these mid round edges. I personally think Zuniga might play good moving to a 4-3. But regardless adding Tryon just helps the rotation at edge for us. Dupree, Zuniga, Tryon and Huff is a good group (who knows maybe we resign Basham for cheap as well).

3. (from ATL) Pete Werner (LB/Ohio State) Moving to a 4-3 we will need some LB help. And Werner can play greta next to Mosely in this scheme. Plays the LB position the way you'd like at the NFL level. Has versatility at LB to play multiple spots as well.

3. (from SEA) Drake Jackson (IOL/Kentucky) Creating the OL pipeline where there's depth and battling for spots. McGovern is still the starting C. But Jackson provides depth behind him as well as depth at OG as well. Let the best guys play at C and RG. Becton, Clark, Leatherwood and Jackson is just creating a great group of young guys on the OL potentially.

4. Tommy Tremble (TE/Notre Dame) Receiving TE. The WCO needs good TE play and we are just trying to cover ourselves here. We have Everett and Herndon already... but just try and get a young guy in there too. This allows us to cut Griffin post 6/1 as well to free up 2.5mill in cap.

5. Keith Taylor (CB/Washington) Another big bodied CB that can play physical and all over the secondary.

5. (from NYG) Amari Gainer (LB/Florida State) A do it all LB. Can actually line up all over the place as a LB, Pass rusher and even S at times. A jack of all trades weapon for us. Think of a poor mans Jimmie Ward for Saleh.

6. Leon O'Neal Jr (SS/Texas A&M) Good do it all S. Can play both FS and SS, but is better at SS. Great tackler who plays with passion.

7. Brent Cimaglia (K/Tennessee): Mann and Cimaglia will give us one of the best young ST specialists in the NFL.

On Offense

We decided to stick with Darnold BUT finally pair him with a talented coaching staff, protection and weapons. This of course if the focus of the offseason. On the OL... an OL of Becton, Thuney, McGovern, Leatherwood, Fant is very good. There's also loads of depth behind it to create competition in Elflein, Jackson, Clarke and Edoga. At RB we get a star in Harris. With him we become a well balanced offense. Harris should really shine with us. He's a star. At TE we add Everett and Tremble. Let the best guy play. The WCO needs TE play. Surely Everett or Herndon can do good in this system. WR where we needed the most help, we remake the group. Adding a #1 option in Godwin and future star in Smith. A group of Godwin, Smith, Crowder, Mims is incredible.

On Defense

We finally get a star edge that we've needed for a long time in Dupree. We go one step further there as well in drafting Tryon to create that competition for our other starting Edge (battle between Tryon, Zuniga, Huff and maybe Basham) This is a position that it's great to have depth and rotation at as well. At CB we add a starting CB in Campbell. With the way I did FA (I addressed Edge, OG, WR and TE) CB is the biggest need for us come that pick. There's now a good amount of young talent in that secondary that should only get better (Hall, Campbell, Poole, Maye, Davis, Taylor, Austin). Our LB group with Mosley coming back isn't in bad shape. But we get younger with Werner taking a starting spot as a rookie. At the other LB spot let the best man win between Peanut and Cashman. On the IDL I think we are set there with Q, JFM, Foley and others. That's why I didn't touch that group.

For me this team can compete and it's a step in the right direction for this team.

Saleh coming from being Shanny is highly unlikely to take a RB in round one and nor should be to be honest. Go draft yourself a corner, edge rusher or LB with the second first rounder.

It’s hard for me not to agree with that. But the value at those positions just isn’t there for me at that spot. When Harris’ value is through the roof and we have no one at RB.

And since LaFleur will be running the outside zone scheme, I'm not even sure Harris is the best fit for the offense. Not saying he couldn't do good in this scheme but I don't see the Jets taking a RB before the 3rd or 4th round.

There are some good corners in this draft so there is a chance one of Horn/Farley is there at your second slot. Supposedly a solid edge class as well.

I mean I have us taking Campbell at 35, so I'm still drafting a CB high. In this draft we don't need a 1st round edge. I have us signing Dupree to be our main edge and let the young guy battle out the other spot. And still drafting Tryon high.

I would agree with this. Give me Javonte Williams in a later round and address Edge and CB earlier. Call me crazy but I might even cut Crowder(save $11M) in this scenario if we are adding Godwin and Smith, only because I'd hate to see Mims see less utilization.

I'm all for holding onto Darnold and like the direction you went with this mock.

I know everyone gave up on Darnold, but like it or not no one in the NFL has had it worse. The guy literally had no talent around him and had the worst HC in football. If the new coaching staff rather utilize picks and build a football team then worry about putting another young QB in a bad situation, I won't be mad.

Assuming we aren’t taking a QB, I’m cool with this. We’d have weapons up to our eye balls. Everett and Herndon are a descent duo. Both can play that HBack role too. So we have flexibility because they can align at different spots. WR group is top notch. And Harris is a beast. The OL looks stout.

I love Harris. My dream of getting him with our second is likely not going to happen since he’s now almost locked to go in the 1st. I do agree that we are now less likely to go RB early because of our coaching hire.

Another possible option is OL at #23 and a RB like Williams with one of the 2nd. Doesn’t change it much but if we think there’s no way we go RB at #23, then OL might be an option.

This would be the best case scenario..:for Sam Darnold. Sure he’d have to learn a new system and have new weapons in a covid hit offseason but for gods sake if he can’t ball out with that cast of weapons then there’s no hope for the guy.

It would set us up nicely for the following year to again look at drafting a qb but if we don’t go qb at #2 then I’m all about the trade down and snagging either Smith or Chase.

You better get use to it. Sam will be the week 1 QB.

Yup. It’s a very real possibility now that we know our GM and HC like Darnold. They’d have to fall in love with one if the QBs to take one at 2.

We’ll see.  I honestly think Saleh knows what Darnold’s all about - he prepped for him week 2 and demolished him with his backups.
