Another key piece in the Atlanta Falcons' new regime is in place. The team announced Tuesday morning that Terry Fontenot has been hired to be its next general manager.

Fontenot comes to Atlanta from the New Orleans Saints, where he has spent the last 18 years of his career. Fontenot just completed his first season as the Saints' vice president/assistant general manager for pro personnel.

According to CBS the Saints will receive two third round picks as compensation, one in 2021 and one in 2022.

Not from the Falcons, but as part of the NFLs program for promoting minority staff into leadership positions.

The picks make this departure sting a little less.

They get them as comp picks at the end of the round. Still, not a terrible thing to have. It's why I was hoping a team would hire Raheem Morris for head coach.

Not sure how to feel about this move. What I gather most of his work wasn't on the college scouting  but on the pro scouting department. Imo the success of the Saints lately has mostly been thanks to their stellar drafting, more so then their FA acquisitions.

I'll refrain from making a big comment on this in order not to derail the thread but that's just stupid.

He did all of the advance scouting around the league. Don't get it twisted, front offices all have input on the draft. And you can't figure out what will work in the draft until you know how guys are in the pro level now.

It’s true. The Saints have hit majorly on some recent draft picks and Fontenot had little to do with that.

But guys like Demario Davis and Janoris Jenkins have exceeded expectations and helped transform the defense at positions the Saints normally can’t hit on unless a superstar (like Lattimore) just falls into their lap.

Then you have underrated signings like Latavius Murray, Malcolm Brown and Emmanuel Sanders who all fill their roles excellently and at a good value.

The big thing with Terry is his work ethic... he started out working in the Saints marketing department and worked his way up to Assistant General manager. The man never gets tired, he lives to work in the NFL. I think his best years are still ahead of him.

Yup. This^ Also, he understands that if he doesn't do something well, he can surround himself with people that can do that thing well. There are a ton of guys out there who deserve director of college scouting roles. I wonder if he brings in Kevin Simon.

They'll need it with the cap issues they face.    Build through the draft, hope for 2017.  They'll probably need those even more that they're likely losing at least 1 pick for the Thomas news, too.

ATL certainly could use a better draft GM.   Their record of late has been uninspired.  Fontenot's tutelage in NO, it's hard not to be optimistic for them.

I mean, it's not like Dimitroff was a terrible draft GM. But he was just average there. Atlanta did have a solid track record, but it was an every other draft they'd have a good one and then every other draft, they'd have no one hit at all.

No he wasn't terrible.   But he never found enough value in the draft to avoid re-signing all his best picks, so he's gradually turned the team into a top-heavy, high-priced 2nd contract team, with underperforming rookie-deal guys manning key spots (Ridley is the lone single exception).  His CB and OL misses in particular, and whiffing on Beasley, really have hurt him.    Trench play and CB's, outside of QB play, are such premium positions to miss on.

why would they be losing a pick for the Thomas news?

Not on the injury report, yet didn't practice all week.  That's a major no-no.  And if they did it on multiple weeks, that's repeat offences.  1 offence gets a fine, repeat offences (and past years count, too) - picks get docked.   Usually it's a day 3 pick, I believe SEA lost a 5th.  Given how much the NFL relies on gambling and fantasy sports for their popularity, injury report accuracy has become a huge priority.  If there's proof this was done on multiple occasions where Thomas didn't practice all week and wasn't listed on the injury report - a fine is certain, and picks are definitely in play.   Guess we'll wait & see.
