Phillip Rivers retires after after 17 years

Rivers was never an athletic marvel - statue in the pocket and he had that wonky sidearm/shotput release. Nobody would mistake him for a Pat Mahomes or an Aaron Rodgers - elusive, could hurt you on the ground and could launch a pass into the next zip code.

But - my goodness - was he good at what he did. His anticipation and accuracy was next level great, he saw coverages and got his guys into those spots with relative ease.

What a great career to watch. Only blemish is that lack of a SB, but I don't think he should be diminished by that overall. Everyone would like to have a guy like Rivers for 15+ years.

Good career! At his peak was genuinely a top 5 QB at the time

In the mid 2000’s it was generally Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, and Drew Brees as the top QB’s with Farve sneaking in once he had his resurgence

There was a brief period - where Brady was hurt and then recovering from injury, Favre was not what he was and before Rodgers had really distinguished himself - where Rivers had an argument for top 3 QB in the league. He a couple of MVP caliber seasons over-shadowed by Manning and Brees.

Also the prime example of how much a small market and lack of post-season success can hurt a reputation - he will likely be the least remembered of the 2004 crop of QBs, despite being probably the best player of the bunch.

It would have been great to see Rivers with a functional-type franchise. Imagine if he'd spent 15 years at a team like the Patriots, Ravens, Steelers, Green Bay.

Chargers are just one of those teams that find a way to underwhelm (although maybe he was part of the reason why). Wasn't there a year where they were the league's #1 offense and #1 defense but actually missed the playoffs? Chargers gonna Charger.

Tremendous QB. Whooped our *** his first 8 games against us from 2006-2009.

A lot of people forget, but Rivers was firmly at that #5 QB spot, and an Elite QB, from like 2008 to 2013, the prime of his career. Then in 2017-2018 he had a nice resurrection as a Top 5-6 QB again. In 2019, his arm totally fell off. And in 2020, his arm was still gone, but he was a solid Game Manager for the Colts.

Is he a Hall of Famer? I’d say so. Make him wait til like 3rd or 4th ballot, but he’s a Hall of Famer IMO, and I don’t award that lightly.
