Revisiting the Mahomes Trade

Buffalo and Kansas City are playing in the Conference Championship this week. It seems appropriate that we revisit a significant trade that got the two teams to this place.

The Bills traded the 2017 #10 pick to the Chiefs, who used it to draft Patrick Mahomes II. At the time a lot of teams around the league wondered how the Chiefs pulled the deal off, because several other teams were interested in Mahomes. The answer is that the KC front office set the deal up in the week prior to the draft, so one call and it was done.

The article notes that the Bills did well with the three picks they received--Tre'Davious White, Tremaine Edmunds and Dion Dawkins. They drafted their own QB the following year at #7.

it's not always that way, but some trades are win-win.

Another interesting thing is watching the picks circulate. Only one of the three picks was originally owned by the Chiefs. Due to a2019 injury, all three have started more games than Mahomes. We can ask the Bills fans where the team would be without these three.
