pf9
Ever since Super Bowl I, the AFC and NFC champions have alternated as designated home team. In many cases however, the designated home team had a weaker regular season record than the designated road team. Similarly, home field advantage for the World Series had for years alternated between the AL and NL champions, then went to the league that won the All-Star Game, but since 2017, they have been in line with the NBA and NHL by giving home advantage to the team with the better record. So, I feel the NFL should make the designated home team for each Super Bowl the team with the better record. As an example, had this been done in Super Bowl 50, the Panthers as a 15-1 team would have been the designated home team, and knowing the Broncos have never won a Super Bowl wearing orange jerseys, the Panthers would have worn their white jerseys as the home team, though Denver might have worn their blue jerseys, what they wore when they won Super Bowl 32, as a result. This means that under this rule, neither Green Bay nor Tampa Bay would have no chance of being the designated home team in Super Bowl 55, whereas under the current rule, they would be. If the Super Bowl were Green Bay VS. Buffalo, the Bills would be the designated home team by a better strength of victory.
drew39k
Honestly, home field simply doesn't matter in the NFL. The game is at a neutral site and the kick/receive decision is coin flip based anyway.
Soko
I don’t see how no one’s said this sooner. Who knows how many games the NFL has fixed by making one team wear white and another team wear colors? Broncofan
I feel like maybe the OP should have followed their tag line here.

Welp, guess we should stop blaming Cam for that loss. It was the jersey.
notthatbluestuff
But it's not home advantage, so who cares?
scottishpatriot
Wait. Would this mean Tampa Bay will be the designated away team even though they would also be the first ever team to play the Superbowl in their home stadium?

If they advance, Tampa Bay are the designated home team this year. It's the NFC's turn.
CriminalMind
The thought process of why this is not an option is it takes far too long to plan a super bowl than 2 weeks. Remember all the festivities that goes on during the two weeks, logistics, hotel bookings, VIP coordination everything, half time show extras and that's even before security Edited January 24, 2021 by CriminalMind

It's nothing more than giving a different team the right to choose their jerseys.
Broncofan
If KC wins, TAM should have gone with the dark jerseys.
WideRight
It doesn’t matter and isn’t worth changing. No Super Bowl has ever been determined by jersey color lol. It’s not even like there’s a small advantage like preferring to bat last in baseball or having the last change in hockey.

pf9
Had Super Bowl 5's HFA been determined by record, the Colts would have had the advantage and worn blue, as the NFL required the designated home team in the Super Bowl to wear their colored jerseys in 1970. pf9
As another example, in Super Bull (sic) 40, the Seahawks would have been the designated home team by virtue of winning two more regular season games than the Steelers. The Steelers won every preliminary playoff game that year while wearing white jerseys. The Seahawks thus could have tried to jinx the Steelers by wearing white jerseys as the designated home team, something they had never done at that point for games in Seattle (and still have not done, not even against the Cowboys to invoke the blue jersey jinx), which would have forced Pittsburgh to wear their black jerseys.
