Now that Pettine is gone, who should be the new DC?

I've just had a sudden thought.

Quite often in-house coordinator candidates end up leaving when they don't land the DC gig. Either as a crushing blow to his ego or the new DC lets him go. If the new DC kept him he would have to work with a guy who may have felt he deserved the job and that would be a tricky minefield for the new guy to navigate. Much easier to part ways.

If Gray doesn't get the job I would not be surprised if he ends up leaving.

Oh ya. Definitely he’d likely leave sooner or later but this late in the game there may not be many positions open

I've updated my list of candidates to include any coaches who is associated with Hackett after I noticed Ejiro Evero and Joe Barry both worked on the same staff with him in the past so I wondered who else Hackett might recommend to LaFleur to look at.

I ended up finding another possible serious candidate in Todd Wash who is currently a free agent after being fired as Jacksonville's defensive coordinator. He ran a formidable defence but for whatever reason it all fell apart. He's part of the Montee Kiffin tree and he was in Tampa in 2007 as defensive quality control alongside Ejiro Evero and on that very same staff had Raheem Morris, Jimmy Lake and Gus Bradley. Hackett was there too as offensive quality control coach. All of these guys reached either Head Coach or Coordinator level fairly early on in their careers except for Evero who was stuck toiling away as quality control or defensive assistant on various teams. Evero now has a very real chance of finally joining these group of coaches if he becomes our defensive coordinator.

Scottie Hazelton is another interesting name to pop up who Hackett has previously worked with. He's currently Michigan State's defensive coordinator. Jimmy Lake too, he's the Washington Huskies Head Coach.

^^^^ for the Leonhard crowd.

Quick, someone who watches Wisconsin football, tell me why I should want Leonhard as our DC other than the fact he coaches at Wisconsin. What kind of D does he run, etc...

He runs the same Ryan D as Pettine. He just runs it like Pettine used to. More aggressive on obvious passing downs.

You won't see much change schematically, it'd look more like the 2018 defense, but with Z, Preston and Gary instead of a washed up Matthews and Perry. Pettine really started getting bland during the 2019 season for some reason.

For me the fact that he can get mostly non-bluechip players (he has a couple but not as many as some other schools) and mold them into one of the nation's top defenses is something you just can't ignore.  It would be truly interesting to see what this man can do with NFL talent.  But if he is running a defense similar to Pettine he might not get the job if LaFleur wants the defense to go in a different direction.

Wow! Slightly miffed I didn't come up with some of the names but Bob Sutton, really?! you can do better than that LaFleur! 😄

Glad to see Jim Leonhard showing willingness to interview with us. Have to imagine if there's any job which he is willing to leave Wisconsin for it is to go to the Packers. I got a gut feeling he will impress LaFleur however he said he is clear in his mind what he wants in a coordinator and i'm not sure if Pettine-lite is the way LaFleur wants to go.

LaFleur is clearly using the interviews as an opportunity to do research on the opposition by casting a wide net. That's what good head coaches do. I really hope he will interview some Tampa and Kansas coaches after the superbowl, there's definitely some talent to be found there.

We are very aggressive the first few games. It all started on that game with Chargers.

Peter Bukowski -  Chris Kiffin is another interesting one here. Son of Monte Kiffin, who literally has a defense named after him, and coached for Robert Saleh in San Francisco as a pass rush specialist for a VERY good pass rush. Coached Myles Garrett this year for the Browns.
