I think this should put everyone at ease. He wants to rework his deal, he knows they need cap space. His hit is $37 million next year and the cap is dropping.

This is good for all invoked. Make him happy. Free up money for the team. Win/Win.

...............Unless your name is Jordan Love. If Love turns out to be a high quality QB it would also be a disaster for the Packers - they could get mired in a 20 year search for a good QB, like (for example) the Bears have. Surely you have to wait another season to see what you have in Love, especially as Rodgers contract runs to the end of 2023.

If this is true then what he hinted at in that post game presser was just a sad frustrated player coming off the field after a gut wrenching loss.  I do hope he wants to restructure.  He has to know with the cap situation right now it will be difficult for GB to pay him more in 2021.  MLF said after the game he wants him back so let's hope he and Gute will make everybody happy this offseason.

The Packers want to restructure him. This is a non story.

His 37 million dollar cap hit is a problem with a flat cap.

The only question is do they just convert all of his base salary to bonus money to get him a fat check right now and spread out the cap, or do only convert the first year and tack on an extra year to offer flexibility and further annual savings going forward.

All of those links cite Florio at PFT, who is a massive Rodgers critic and troll. There is zero chance he has any insight into what’s going on.

I don't get it. We can't extend his contract just a year after committing to draft Jordan Love.

We can't offer him more money in the short term as that would increase our cap hit.

How would giving Rodgers a new contract even benefit both sides? I don't get the logic here.

Right now my gut is telling me that this story is completely made up to generate fake controversy and clicks. We all know what Rodgers is truly like and this is not his style.

Rodgers has a very favorable contract to renegotiate. He’s due 65M in base salary over the next 3 seasons, and only has 23M in bonus money spread over the next two years. You can convert some of that base to bonus, spread it out over the extra year or add on years to the deal and spread it out further.

The main complication is Love. Right now there is a clear path to Love taking over for Rodgers. I’m sure Rodgers is looking to make himself uncuttable or un tradeable that 3rd year and maybe add on a few years to complicate the issue. Not necessarily screw the Packers over, but he’s an employee trying to make sure his company retains his services. Makes sense to use the leverage when you have it.

Yup, one of the biggest dufuss there is regarding the Packers.  He's a Viking fan all day long and deserves them.

A new deal (essentially a restructuring) allows GB to reduce Rodgers’ massive 2021 cap hit. It also allows Rodgers to convert future money into up-front money in his pocket, which benefits him. It wouldn’t necessarily financially tie them to Rodgers any longer than the current deal, even if extra meaningless years are added at the end to spread out the annual cap charges.

This is a non-story by a hack “journalist”. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team came to Rodgers first to discuss a rework.

Expect a lot of AR drama the next few months during the offseason. A mic was put in his face after a bad loss. The PFTs/Cowherds/other talking heads need to fill 7 months of programming. See the Favre "retirement" story every year (will Brett play or will he retire was on ESPN every day for months multiple offseasons, as soon as he committed to playing, the story was buried)..... We got a little taste of this in the 2018 offseason as Cousins (the most "uncertain" QB) had just found his spot and the news media was looking for a new story. Fortunately we resigned AR early or it would have been worse. Don't fall for the click bait BS. AR is -500 the GB QB next year in Vegas.

With that said:

-we could give him more guaranteed money in 2022/23 and lower his cap number for 2021 (we're probably going to do this with DA/Z).

-I do get AR wanting more security. His last 2 years aren't that secure.

-Jordan Love right now is not a reason to not extend AR. I was one of the biggest fans of the pick, but AR is a bird in the hand. The only way we trade him would be if 2021 goes horribly, we need a rebuild, and we can get like 2 1s.

The packers finally made a remark about rodgers, something I think they really had to do.

Wow no way. I’m so shocked. This is all a play by the media to get fans worked up and get clicks from the idiots. Don’t play into it.
