Summary

This game was closer than the final score indicates.  The game was close until the end when they started fouling to extend the game and my free throws pushed the lead higher.  Lebron James had another good game but I pretty much shut down the rest of the roster.  Two years ago when I played the Cavs they still had Isaiah Thomas who was a scoring machine, but the Cavs don’t see to have that #2 guy this year (to be fair they have Jimmy Butler but he’s out for the season with a torn Achilles).

Rookie PF CJ Ellis Jr. was the star of this game.  The Cavs came out early double teaming him, so I dumped the ball to SG Troy Daniels for some wide open 3s.  After Daniels hit a few of those (he was 6-6 from 3 in the game) the defense slacked off Ellis and I was one-on-one with Kevin Love.  Ellis ate Love up all game long.  I have never had a PF that is this versatile offensively before.  Ellis is probably the best 3 point shooter on my team but I haven’t really been using him that way, he’s a force driving to the basket against opposing bigs because he’s too fast for them.  If they switch off onto a guard, Ellis is 6’10” 261 lbs so I just back them down in the post for an easy layup.  He’s pretty amazing and is only going to get better.

Meeks was solid defensively but didn’t make as big of an impact offensively this game.  Bembry was getting pushed around by Lebron, I really wish Lamar Davidson was back so I can match him up against Lebron.  Backup SF Al Grace had 16 points, mostly driving to the basket against Cleveland’s 2nd unit.  Grace is a pretty solid backup.  PG/SG Morrison didn’t make much of an impact again, and starting PG Alexi Gornev didn’t post a single stat in the game.  I run the ball almost completely through Ellis Jr., so Gornev is pretty worthless.  A 3 & D PG prospect would pair the best with Ellis running the point, I’ll have to consider that for future drafts.

Bulls lead the series 2-1.

Summary

This game wasn’t even close, but it should have been cause I didn’t play that well.  The Cavs just acted like they didn’t want to be there.  I shot pretty terrible from 3, missed a bunch of free throws but completely manhandled them physically all game long.  Carson Meeks had 30 rebounds, 30!  He completely abused Tristan Thompson all game.  Rookie PF Ellis Jr. dropped 40 on them, and PG Alexi Gornev had his best game of the series contributing 14 points off of 6-12 shooting.

Backup PF/C Ed Hansen had a surprisingly good game.  He’s been pretty quiet all series so I was considering bringing in one of the backup Centers to replace him.  But tonight he had several offensive rebounds for put backs, and he even hit an open 3 when I accidently put one up from deep with him lol (his 3 point shot rating is 59).  I may still replace him with a Center in the next series to see if I get some more impact play from the position.

Backup Forwards Grace and Carlisle continue to impress on defense, and Grace pretty much runs my 2nd unit offense.  Carlisle hit an open 3 pointer in the game.  I thought PG/SG Morrison was going to break of out of his slump when he hit two 3 pointers early, but he finished the game 2-10 shooting.  Not sure what his deal has been, guess he needs more development.

Bulls lead the series 3-2.

Summary

This was a very frustrating game.  It was a defensive slugfest for the majority of the game, and the Jackson Baldwin went off in the 4th Quarter and pulled the Magic away from me.  I turned the ball over way too many times and didn’t play my normal offensive game in the paint.  I settled for way too many contested jump shots in this game, but the Magic are so athletic and long they make every possession difficult.  Their starting lineup is stacked, Jackson Baldwin plays practically every minute of the game, and they have Nikola Vucevic, Elfrid Payton, Henry Ellenson, TJ McConnell and Tyler Lydon off the bench.  All of those guys are 78 OVR or higher.

The biggest change in this series is having Jackson Baldwin matched up on CJ Ellis Jr. which makes running the offense through Ellis practically impossible.  Baldwin is just so fast and long, he’s a defensive nightmare (he had 10 steals in the game).

But enough about them, Lamar Davidson is back and he had a good game defensively himself with 6 steals.  Unfortunately he was pretty inefficient offensively making on 8 of 26 shots, but I was jacking up too many poor shots.  Was probably user error on my part.  I really need Davidson to be the guy in this series, because with Ellis defended by Baldwin and Deandre Jordan covering Meeks my two normal go to guys are going to be lacking good looks.

Magic lead the series 1-0.

Summary

I was in this game until the very end, which is surprising because if you look at the stats I was pretty much dominated in every category.  I did a pretty good job of not turning the ball over, and played PF CJ Ellis Jr. primarily as the main PG on offense.   Ultimately I just couldn't make any shots which is why I lost.  Not a lot to add, I got beat.  My team is young and needs more grooming.  Pretty sure I'm getting swept in this series.

Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

The only lottery pick I have this year is the Clippers pick, but its lottery protected, so I have no lottery picks this year.  The top 5 odds are:

1.       Wizards (25.0%)

2.       Rockets (19.9%)

3.       Raptors (15.6%)

4.       Pacers (11.9%)

5.       Heat (8.8%)

Who’s it going to be…..

The Nets jumped into the top 3 from 8, that’s a big jump for them.  The Raptors landed the #3 picks, the Rockets fell to 4.  The Nets got #2 and the Wizards won the lottery.

I have the 23rd and 24th picks in this draft.

Staff Signing/Firing

Everyone on my staff has an expiring contract.  Here’s a breakdown of my current staff:

CFO – Garry Harris – Business (A), Potential (C), Economical Badge, Marketer Badge, Bully Badge – 4 years, $1.50 mil.  RETAINED.  I don’t really dabble into the money stuff much, so I don’t really care that much about CFO.

AGM – Abraham Navarro – Contracts (A-), Trading (B+), Potential (C ), Recruiter and Wingman Badges – 4 years, $600,000k.  RETAINED.  He hasn’t progressed at all but he’s still by far the best candidate.

Head Coach – Stephen Dawkins – Offense (B), Defense (B-), Potential (B), Teacher Badge – FIRED.  I signed this guy because he had a decent potential rating and the Teacher Badge, but he hasn’t progressed at all.  Time to give someone else a shot.

Assistant Coach – Dirk Nowitzki – Offense (C-), Defense (A-), Potential (B), Former Player, Tactician Badges – 4 years, $4.50 mil.  PROMOTED.  There aren’t any good candidates available and Dirk has progressed into a pretty solid defensive coach while being my assistant.

Head Scout – Don Carter – Scouting (A), Potential (B-), Dedicated and Careless Badges – 4 years, $400k.  RETAINED.  He’s a pretty good scout, I’m going to keep him around.

Trainer – Jimmy Lynch – Training (A), Potential (B-), Fitness Guru and Preparer Badges – 4 years, $450k.  RETAINED.  He’s the best Trainer on the market this year.

New Assistant Coach – Dwayne Wade – Offense (B), Defense (C+), Potential (B), Former Player badge – I was looking for an assistant with a decent offensive rating and I found another former player with a decent coach potential rating here in Wade.

So the only changes are I promoted Dirk to Head Coach and signed Dwayne Wade as my new Assistant Coach.

2022 NBA Draft

NBA_Draft_logo_(no_year).png

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 23 overall

Round 1 – 24 overall

I don’t have any high picks this year, so I’ll just be looking for depth or maybe even trades with my picks.

SG Dana Saunders goes #1 overall to the Wizards, he’s an 89 OVR unbelievable shooter should be a huge star for them.  #2 overall is SG Jim Kelly to the Nets, he’s a great athlete with upside.   The Nets immediately traded Jim Kelly and Dante Exum to the Raptors for #3 overall and Serge Ibaka.  Geez that’s dumb.  The Nets then take SG Ben Bryan #3 overall, not a terrible swap for them actually as Bryan is even more athletic than Kelly just more raw.  The Hawks select another SG, Carlton Hunter at #4, he’s probably the best 3 point shooter in the draft.  The Pacers then trade #5 overall and Myles Turner to the Hornets for Jaylen Brown and a 2024 first rounder, woah that’s a huge trade.  The Hornets then select SF Theo Chase, who is one of the only prospects with A+ potential in this draft.  So the Hornets got Myles Turner and a A+ potential forward in that trade?  Jesus.

Time to sim to my picks.

These are the top players available at 23:

SF Sebestyen Marai

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
17 SG/SF Sebestyen Marai 6'6" 202 6'7" Hungary 69 C+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- C D- D+ C- D+ B D+ A-

Marai is raw, and will stay in Hungary for another year before he comes over.  His size isn’t great for a SF, so I’d probably play him primary as a SG.  He can’t shoot at all either, he’s probably going to be a defensive specialist early that I’ll need to teach to shoot.  He has 84 SPD, 69 ACC and 82 Lateral Quickness.  He doesn’t have any badges.  His Potential rating isn’t great either.

SF Coty Palmer

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
27 SF/PF Coty Palmer 6'8" 230 7'3" Utah 69 C+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D+ C+ A- D D C- C- C- C-

Palmer is one of the best 3 point shooters left in the draft, and his size is enough to play SF.  He isn’t a great athlete, 63 SPD, 67 ACC, but he has decent playmaking and rebounding abilities.  He doesn’t have any badges either.

SF Alvin Randle

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
34 SF/PF Alvin Randle 6'10" 240 7'3" Pittsburgh 65 C

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C D- F D+ D+ C C- D+ A-

Randle is the best athlete available and he has great size, the problem is he’s completely raw and his Potential rating sucks.  He has 77 SPD, 82 ACC with 86 Lateral Quickness on a 6’10” 240 lb frame.  One thing he does have going for him is his quickness, and solid inside scoring, and I was looking for an inside scorer to add to my backup unit.

C Colin McCarthy

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
121 C Colin McCarthy 6'11" 264 7'4" Stanford 70 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
A- B F B- D- C- C+ C+ D+

I usually don’t list 4 prospects per pick but look at this guy.  My scout found me a gem deep in this draft, and honestly it would be hard to pass on him here.  He’s a great interior scorer, has a decent mid-range shot, and good interior defender.  I wish he was a tad taller for a Center and he’ll need to work on his rebounding, but he’s probably the best prospect available.  He has the Drop Stepper, Pick & Popper, and Up & Under Specialist badges.  My only worry is that I’m taking him way too early, and that I could trade down and still get him.

I don’t see any point in risking a trade down.  It’s pretty obvious who the BPA is, regardless of rankings.

With the 23rd pick in the NBA draft the Chicago Bulls select:

C Colin McCarthy, Stanford

sX4JPAH.jpg

Wasn’t really looking for another Center here but he’ll give me the interior scorer I was looking for with my 2nd unit.

I’m on the clock again here at 24:

Obviously the same guys are up for consideration here.  But I’m not blown away so I’m going to consider some trades too.  Here’s IMO the best trade offer available:

Philadelphia 76ers Receive

#24 overall

2023 2nd Round Pick

Chicago Bulls Receive

2023 Warriors 1st Round pick (lottery protected)

This would be pushing this pick back a year, and the Warriors have been in decline in recent years in the league.  This pick has a decent chance of being right around the 24th pick next year though.  One thing to note is that I already have three first round picks for next year’s draft.

I think I’m just going to take someone here that can develop over time.

With the 24th pick in the NBA draft the Chicago Bulls select:

SF/PF Alvin Randle, Pittsburgh

Tef0N1u.jpg

When in doubt take the guy with size.  I don’t expect Randle to contribute for several years, but he shouldn’t complain about not getting minutes.

Another draft done, this one isn’t going to have a huge immediate impact.  But I feel like McCarthy can provide offense inside with my 2nd unit that I wasn’t getting in last year’s playoffs.

*UPDATE*

Wow, McCarthy’s Potential rating is actually A+.

Randle also is a 69 OVR not a 65 OVR, and he has C+ potential.

Player/Team Options

SG Lamar Davidson (90) – $7.54 mil – He’s the second best player on my team.  I’m going to try to extend him this year.

PG Alexi Gornev (82) - $3.40 mil – He’s a solid starter.  He’s worth it on this cheap contract.

C Carson Meeks (81) - $4.10 mil – He’s my starting Center.

C Malik Flowers (76) – no offer – I have 17 players on my roster and someone needs to go.  I have way too many Centers (5), and don’t even play a traditional Center with my 2nd unit sometimes.

SF Al Grace (76) - $2.52 mil – He’s my backup SF and good scorer off the bench.

PG/SG Tim Morrison (76) - $3.80 mil – I keep hoping he takes the next step but so far been a little disappointed with him.

C Drew Daly (76) – no offer – Same as Flowers, just don’t need another Center on the roster and I’m out of roster space.

PF Ed Hansen (74) - $2.20 mil – solid interior defender off the bench.

Qualifying Offers

SF Jonathon Pederson (75) - $2.65 mil – This guy is pretty good, it’s a shame he doesn’t crack my rotation.  He’s a good 3 point shooter and will help me if I have injuries.  If someone wants to offer him a big deal I’ll let him walk though.

Free Agency

Starting SF Deandre Bembry is a FA, and I need to consider whether to bring him back or sign someone else.  Or, maybe move on and start Grace?

So here are my options for my starting SF position this year:

FA Options

SF Denzel Valentine (83) – former Bull, he’s a fantastic 3 point shooter and all around scorer.  Poor defender.  He wants a very expensive $25 per season contract.

SF Taurean Prince (80) – Was on my team for a few seasons, he’s a great athlete who can defend at both the 3 and 4 spots.  He’s an adequate shooter (better than Bembry though).  He wants a somewhat expensive $13 mil per season deal.

SF Deandre Bembry (77) – this would be sticking with the status quo, which really hasn’t been working.  He’s a solid defender and slasher, and a really good passer but he can’t shoot.  He wants a pretty reasonable $6 mil per season deal.

Also available are an aging Kawhi Leonard and Carmelo Anthony, Otto Porter, and OG Anunoby.  But none of them have history with my team and I feel like it would be unrealistic for me to sign them.

Or I could sign none of them, and start SF Al Grace who’s honestly probably a better option than Bembry at this point.  I’m not going to pay Valentine all that money, so really it comes down to Prince vs. Grace.

Or another option would be to move CJ Ellis Jr. back to SF and start someone else at PF.  However, Grace is a higher OVR rated player than my next PF, Ed Hansen.  That would really screw up my spacing though.

I think I’m going to stick Grace and give him a shot. He’s a great perimeter defender, which is what I  need in my starting lineup.  I don’t really need another scorer.  That would also push Pederson (if he resigns) into my rotation and allow me to get another shooter with my 2nd unit.

Signed SG Brent Saunders to a 2-year $3.50 mil contract – decent shooter who’s a great athlete.  I needed another backup 2 guard in case of injuries.  He takes Bembry’s spot on the roster.

SF Jonathon Pederson signed his qualifying offer to stay with the team.

Major Contract Signings:

PF Blake Griffin – Clippers – 5 years, $195.88 mil

SG Jimmy Butler – Cavaliers – 3 years, $86.38 mil (this is a great deal for the Cavs)

SF Denzel Valentine – Grizzlies – 3 years, $72,88 mil

SF Jackson Baldwin – Magic – 5 years, $171.89 mil (was kinda hoping he’d bolt to the West lol)

PG Tyler Ulis – Hawks – 3 years, $59.17 mil (yikes)

PG Dennis Smith Jr. – Mavericks – 5 years, $147.09 mil

SG Howie Eaton – Bucks – 4 years, $115.39 mil

SG Arthur Stinson – Knicks – 4 years, $115.39 mil

SF Otto Porter – Mavericks – 4 years, $107.10 mil

C Malik Flowers – Knicks – 1 year, $15.78 mil (woah really?  Good for Flowers)

C Deandre Jordan – Clippers – 1 year, $26.22 mil (so he left the Magic to head home, good this will weaken the Magic some)

SF Kawhi Leonard – Rockets – 1 year, $20.61 mil
