Bears 2021 roster/trades/transactions

Last year we had 11 TEs.....this year it's WR.  Bringing in Newsome, Goodwin, and Byrd to compete with Miller, Wims, and Riley can only be seen as a good thing.  Wims should've been cut right after that BS stunt he pulled and Miller can't get out of his own way.

I still wouldn't mind taking a shot at someone like Dede Westbrook depending on where he's at health wise.

Would also like to see Arob finally get his well deserved extension if he's still interested. They have 2 months to make up their minds.

Another WR added

In eight career games with the Lions between 2018-19, Lacy caught three passes for 60 yards. He was also a valuable special teams contributor.

Over his final two seasons at Oklahoma State, he caught 51 passes for 753 yards and three touchdowns.

Matt Nagy recently told reporters that depth at wide receiver was at its best since he’s been here. Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney are Chicago’s top receivers, and there’s set to be a ton of competition behind them with Anthony Miller, Marquise Goodwin, Damiere Byrd, rookie Dazz Newsome, Javon Wims and Riley Ridley.

I'm thinking they're looking to stock up on ST guys for the competition to replace Patterson and McManis.

That's our top two "gunners" who won't return and a world class KR Specialist.  I think we're gonna find guys making the 53 man roster we didn't expect simply because they're outstanding coverage guys on ST.

Replacing those guys isn't going to be easy either. Especially Patterson. As you said,  he was an ace on both sides of the ball.

Guys like Bush and DHC are solid replacements for McManis as gunners.

Punt return is an interesting battle to watch. Cohen most likely has the upper hand since I think their slowly weeding him out of the offense to limit his touches, and injury risk, with the Williams and Herbert additions.

Plus, he's by far the most experienced on the team at the NFL level.  From 2017-2020 he has 30 kick returns and 96 punt returns. The next closest on the team is Miller with 8 and 5, respectively. The only other qualifiers with atleast 1 return is Holtz (7/0), Nall (3/0), and Mooney (1/0). Oh and RRH (1/0) lol.

Hopefully someone like Dazz or Byrd can step up this year.  I personally don't wanna see Mooney being used on STs. Develop him into a Tyreek Hill at WR instead. Too many touches are never a good thing for any player.

Tabor's got his work cut out for him, for sure.

Damn. I just realized forgot to tell the spreadsheet to subtract the dead-cap when I moved the chart. 22M would've been nice though. Not sure how I missed this.

I added the rookies and OTCs estimated rookie contracts (which is an uptick of about 2% from last year at each slot). As of now, only Fields/Jenkins would count against the cap. Their combined ~5M hit cancel out two 850k contracts (1.7M).

Cap space (before official rookie signings);  $5,479,505
Cap space (if you include the estimated rookie signings): $2,223,165

These numbers also include Leno's release ---which doesn't officially go in the books until June 1st. Dead-cap and savings have already been accounted for.

Well so much for my thoughts about Cervenka.

The Bears fortified their interior offensive line depth Wednesday by cutting offensive lineman Gage Cervenka from Clemson and signing former Dallas Cowboys center/guard Adam Redmond.

Redmond, who is 6-foot-6, 300 pounds, turned 28 Wednesday and started out his career in 2016 as an undrafted free agent from Harvard who signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

With the Colts, he played in four games in 2017, then was cut in 2017 after he'd been on the Colts practice squad. He was picked up by Buffalo briefly and waived, then Dallas signed him and he appeared in 14 games in 2018 and 2020 without a start. He has been on the field for only 154 offensive snaps and none since 2018. He played on 83 special teams snaps, as well.

For the Bears, the center position is very deep as Sam Mustipher finished the year starting and both Cody Whitehair and James Daniels can play either guard or center. Alex Bars even played it one game last year.

Redmond figures to be a camp body more than anything, and possible depth in case of an injury or if another player were to be traded.

It has not yet been established if the Bears are planning to start Mustipher at center this year or if they'll return Whitehair to that position and move Daniels to be a right guard starter for the first time.

Either way, the interior of the line has plenty of candidates and Redmond will face a challenge making the roster even as a backup guard. The Bears have Elijah Wilkinson as a backup guard and tackle and rookie Larry Borom can play tackle or guard, as well. Both 2020 seventh-round draft picks Lachavious Simmons and Arlington Hambright are guards or tackles.

Cervenka was picked up by the Bears this offseason as an undrafted free agent.

@soulman I like the fact that they're seemingly putting alot of emphasis in the trenches on both sides this year and gearing up not just gearing up for 2021 but the future as well.

I'm really curious to how Hambright's career plays out. This may be a Leno(or Massie?) situation where a 7th rounder becomes a full-time starter.  They trusted him enough to start him in his rookie and there were no glaring holes in his game (despite playing with a mixed bunch and not a stable unit).

Massie was a 4th round pick, and Leno didn't start until week 4 of his 2nd season

He was a LT at Oklahoma State before moving on to Colorado where he also played LT.

Unless he's added some weight the Bears have him listed at 300lbs which may put him on the bubble as we shift to heavier OL but his strength as a run blocker was one of the highlights of his scouting report.

If he's added a little weight and can backup at both LG and LT he could make the team.

A quick check.....damn we got some beef on the OL this year! Albeit, I don't really trust weights from any site because players' weight fluctuate so often and teams don't officially update 'em so it's hard to keep tabs on.

See, I know nothing about Hambright except for the limited PT he showed last year. The fact he was a LT in college and they started him at LG last year tells me they think he's a project tackle who would work best as a G. Which is perfectly normal and fine by me.

If he can become good depth at LG then that's great. If he develops into a swing then all the better. You can never have enough OL depth. Who knows, he might surprise us. Again, Leno worked his *** off and made a solid career out of it.

Besides, we def have more depth on the right side of the line than we do on the left. Especially at LT. We're short-handed there for sure.

Hambright is another college DL who was converted to OT we drafted in keeping with the idea of drafting OTs who show good feet and athleticism with an intent on moving them to OG.  I think Borom more or less fits into that same mold as does a FA like Ifedi.

I believe Kyle Long taught us the value of having quick athletic OG who could also handle bigger DT and NT so the focus has now become more on the 315-320lb guy as opposed to the 300lb guy all across the interior of the OL.

I don't necessarily subscribe to listed weight either.  James Daniels is still listed at 305lbs when by his own admission he added 8-10lbs prior to last season which would put him in the 313-315lb range.  I believe all of the interior guys are in the 310-320lb range and the OTs in the 320-340lb range.  We're definitely getting bigger again.

If in Hambright we can get a guy who can pass block as well as Leno and run block much better we could have the perfect left side swing guy.

Here's a video detailing his Bears scouting evaluation.

Bittersweet day for Newsome. He broke his collarbone yesterday and will have surgery today.  Which really sucks.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/bears/ct-cb-chicago-bears-dazz-newsome-allen-robinson-20210602-wdkgnjs6ybhqzkgmivp5vs2tke-story.html

Nagy said rookie wide receiver Dazz Newsome injured his shoulder when he landed hard after going up for a catch Tuesday. NFL Network reported Newsome broke his collarbone and will undergo surgery Thursday.

He is expected to have an eight-week recovery, which means he could be ready to return around the start of training camp, according to the report.

The Bears have released TE Darion Clark

Alyssa Barbieri

Sun, June 13, 2021, 8:06 PM

The Chicago Bears have freed up a roster spot with the release of tight end Darion Clark, the team announced Sunday night.

Clark, a 6-foot-6 former college basketball player with Charlotte, USC and Grand Canyon, is relatively inexperienced as a tight end. After making the transition to football in college, he participated in USC’s pro day as a tight end in March 2018.

The Bears signed Clark to a reserve/future contract back in January 2020. Last season, Clark spent the entire season on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury during training camp.
