Who are the Bears backup CBs since they have released Thomas Graham, Trufant and Artie Burns?  Odd they would release them all, I thought Graham played solid for them.  Also cut Pennel, Snowden and Vaughters that is a surprise as well.  I guess at LB they did want to keep Jones because he played so good, same with Woods and Ogletree.

And what they have almost zero backup offensive line on the inside outside of Bars and maybe Borom.

The CB situation is odd for now, we'll see what they do in the next few days. The IOL isn't as bad(not that they are good playing) because they have a bunch of guys that can play almost every where on the OL.

With the OL I think Wilkinson did well in the preseason but might be more of a guard, and not sure Jason Peters has much left in him.  But Simmons or Borom looked decent in preseason as well and both of them especially Borom could playe guard sure.  But no backup center at all, sure Whitehair could do it or Daniels and maybe that is what they are thinking.  Bars as the only back if that is correct on the IOL just seems odd.

But yeah if Peters does not turn out at LT that could be an issue, he looked kind of done for on the Eagles last year and not sure he has much left.  Lucky for them Wilkinson, Borom and Simmons have not been bad but all are more RT types and Ifedi is not a LT either.

Maybe they really like Xavier Crawford at corner, I like Shelley just surprised one could cut that many corners.  I assume they think most of those guys can get on the practice squad, guys like Graham and Snowden etc.  But still looking at the cuts it is not like they even cut many OL so it just seems like a room that is lacking a lot of depth.  Trufant is probably more of money saving thing, maybe same thin with Burns.

Wilkinson was terrible.  IMHO he's only on the roster because we are so thin at OT.  Even at age 39 Peters could school him on pass blocking.  The problem with him is there is virtually no way he will last for 17 games so we need someone behind him.

The smartest move would be to keep working Borom at LT and move Wilkinson back to RT where he's at least started before and less of a liability.  He and Simmons can battle over whose a better backup for Ifedi.

The OL is a mess right now and the secondary isn't much better off.

Here’s a look at all the roster moves Chicago made on Wednesday:

Danny Trevathan placed on short-term IR

16386434a59ec09d79630583a2bb221a

Jose M. Osorio/ Chicago Tribune via AP, Pool

The Bears placed linebacker Danny Trevathan on short-term injured reserve as he's been battling knee soreness throughout training camp and preseason. Trevathan is eligible to return no sooner than Week 4. That clears the way for Alec Ogletree, who quickly played his way into a roster spot, to start alongside Roquan Smith for the first three games. Ogletree had an impressive camp and preseason, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him also play his way into keeping the starting job when Trevathan ultimately returns.

Teven Jenkins placed on IR

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

It's been a rough start for rookie offensive tackle Teven Jenkins, who missed the entirety of training camp and preseason with a back injury that required surgery. Jenkins was on the Bears' initial 53-man roster in order to be eligible to return in 2021. GM Ryan Pace says the surgery "fixed the problem," and the hope is he'll be able to return at some point this season. In Jenkins' place, Chicago has Jason Peters and fellow rookie Larry Borom at left tackle.

WR Nsimba Webster claimed off waivers

4424554b1b95a4707c2a559f207163fb

Darren Yama****a-USA TODAY Sports

The Bears claimed just one player off waivers on Wednesday -- former 49ers wide receiver and punt returner Nsimba Webster. With rookie Dazz Newsome waived and placed on the practice squad, Chicago had a void to fill at punt returner, and they did just that with Webster. Webster, who played all 16 games with the Rams last season, had 25 punt returns for 185 yards. His primary role was on special teams, which is something important Matt Nagy alluded to last week. But, unfortunately, that meant a fan favorite had to be cut.

WR Rodney Adams waived

Wide receiver Rodney Adams has been one of those feel-good stories of the summer. Following an impressive training camp and preseason, Adams played himself onto the 53-man roster. But that only lasted one day after the Bears placed a claim on Webster, and Adams was the corresponding roster move. The expectation is, assuming Adams clears waivers on Thursday, Chicago will sign him to their practice squad.

Bears re-sign DB Artie Burns

59970d7df1c397950c7c65f9067d56de

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

With the Bears placing Trevathan and Jenkins on IR, that freed up two spots on the active roster, which the team used to bring back cornerback Artie Burns. Burns was competing with Kindle Vildor for the starting cornerback job. The assumption is it'll be Vildor starting opposite Jaylon Johnson to start the season -- given he remained as one of the initial four cornerbacks on the roster -- it wouldn't be a surprise to see Burns get plenty of work.

Bears re-sign DB Marqui Christian

AP Photo/Kamil Krzaczynski

Keeping with the Bears placing Trevathan and Jenkins on IR, that allowed Chicago to bring back defensive back Marqui Christian, who was one of the surprise cuts given he was competing for the starting slot corner job with Duke Shelley. With four cornerbacks on the initial roster, bringing back Christian to presumably compete with Shelley in the slot was an important move.

In Progress: Bears signing WR Breshad Perriman

While it hasn't been made official yet, the Bears are signing veteran wide receiver Breshad Perriman to the roster. Perriman, who is on his seventh team in five years, will add more speed to this offense as a projected WR5. (He ran a 4.24 at the Scouting Combine.) Perriman has 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns in the past two years, and it'll be interesting to see how he factors into the offense. A corresponding roster move will have to be made once the Bears officially sign Perriman to the roster.

Bears sign WR Dazz Newsome to practice squad

Sixth-round rookie wide receiver Dazz Newsome was one of the biggest surprise cuts by the Bears on cutdown day. But, after clearing waivers, it was a quick decision to bring him back on the practice squad, where he has some time to develop. Newsome missed the start of training camp as he recovered from collarbone surgery.

Bears sign CB Thomas Graham Jr. to practice squad

AP Photo/Mark Zaleski

Sixth-round rookie cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. was one of the Bears' most surprising cuts, especially given no one really stood out in the cornerback competition. He'll get some more time to develop on the practice squad and could see a jump in Year 2.

Bears sign OLB Charles Snowden to practice squad

835a85a3bc808c9b54f3832ce539921f

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

Charles Snowden was considered to be one of the prized undrafted free agents this year, and the Bears are wise to keep him. Snowden is coming off an impressive preseason, and now Chicago gets to keep developing him and see where that leads.

Bears sign RB Ryan Nall to practice squad

9e544681adc3e77ad7f88d6a8a9b7e58

AP Photo/Mark Zaleski

The Bears have just three running backs on the roster (with Tarik Cohen starting on the PUP list), so it was a surprise that Ryan Nall didn't start on the active roster. Nall was a favorite to land back on the practice squad, especially given the Bears could look to elevate him on game day to serve on special teams.

Bears sign RB Artavis Pierce to practice squad

1535bccd8e16504da0046023717c7b8c

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Artavis Pierce faced an uphill battle for a roster spot in a loaded running backs room. The Bears only have three running backs on the roster (with Tarik Cohen on the PUP list), but they could potentially turn to him throughout the season.

Bears sign WR Isaiah Coulter to practice squad

4cee6623cb89d1a60f12080446981f4c

AP Photo/Jeffrey Phelps

The Bears never got a real look at wide receiver Isaiah Coulter, who joined the team just before their preseason finale against the Titans. It makes sense they want to see more from Coulter, who has time to impress on the practice squad.

Bears sign S Teez Tabor to practice squad

0ee71fb5d6ba5a3825408d5d3379972a

AP Photo/Kamil Krzaczynski

Teez Tabor was a standout at training camp, where his instincts and playmaking ability was on display in an intriguing battle at reserve safety with Marqui Christian. Tabor suffered a thigh injury back on Aug. 23, which held him out of the final preseason game, but he did enough to warrant a further look on the practice squad.

Bears sign OLB Sam Kamara to practice squad

6fe111342dc0127d1850b8df26cbaf5d

AP Photo/Kamil Krzaczynski

Sam Kamara made the switch from defensive tackle to outside linebacker since joining the Bears, and he made his presence known getting after the quarterback in preseason. But like Snowden, the Bears already had their pass rushers set. Kamara gets some time to develop on the practice squad and could figure into the future.

Bears sign WR Jon'Vea Johnson to practice squad

1a021d03431d64cb73750cc3c7dc818f

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

Jon'Vea Johnson became a regular name on the practice report during training camp working with Justin Fields, where he had some impressive catches. But that training camp success didn't translate to the preseason. He was always a long-shot to make the 53-man roster, but it felt like an easy decision to bring back practice squad.

Bears sign OL Dieter Eiselen to practice squad

f2a568aae43de8caf303db0b3464e5a2

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Dieter Eiselen was listed as the Bears' second-string center behind starter Sam Mustipher, and he was an easy addition back on the practice squad, where he provides depth on the interior of the offensive line.

Bears sign OL Arlington Hambright to practice squad

ae64f7ddcb9f3a285a37f509d057619b

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Former seventh-round pick Arlington Hambright was an easy choice for the practice squad as he continues to develop. Hambright served as the backup left guard this summer, and he provides depth on the offensive line.

Bears sign NT Auzoyah Akufohai to practice squad

Former Texans nose tackle Auzoyah Alufohai is joining the Bears practice squad. Chicago is especially deep on the defensive line, and the Bears will get to develop Alufohai behind a couple of impressive nose tackles in Eddie Goldman and rookie Khyiris Tonga.

Bears sign K Brian Johnson to practice squad

AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh

Brian Johnson never stood a chance of making the 53-man roster with Cairo Santos locked up for the next three years. Still, Johnson had an impressive training camp and preseason. But with the uncertainties with COVID-19, it's wise to keep Johnson stashed on the practice squad in case of emergency. [vertical-gallery id=479711] [vertical-gallery id=479693] [listicle id=479713]

5 things to know about new Bears WR Nsimba Webster

After being waived by the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears claimed wide receiver Nsimba Webster on Wednesday. Webster, 25, is an undrafted return specialist who played for the Rams in 2019 and 2020.

Here are five things to know about the newest member of the Bears:

Nsimba Webster was solid on offense at Eastern Washington

64a33f7b77ed57b94c05466ba537a3bfebster had a solid college career at Eastern Washington. Webster played in 44 games, having 156 catches for 2,233 yards and 18 touchdowns. Webster followed that up with 48 kickoff returns for 1,114 yards and 4 punt returns for 73 yards and 1 touchdown. If Webster would have put up these numbers at a better-known school, he would have found himself has a late-round draft choice – instead of an undrafted free agent.

Webster adds more speed on special teams

8cd59be4e307bea41ea3cbaa7a822820

Webster's 4.49-second 40-yard dash time adds to the Bears' already impressive speed. With the saying speed kills being as true as ever in today's NFL, Chicago went out and added a number of players this offseason to help with that. Webster becomes the eighth fastest player on the roster, with the likes of Khalil Herbert, Justin Fields, Tarik Cohen and Marquise Goodwin being ahead of him.

Webster was an active returner in 2020

5ff0915919585bd1ac69664cf99857be

Last season, Nsimba Webster saw more time on the field than he did his rookie season with the Rams. Webster returned 16 kicks and 25 punts for a total of 532 yards. His 41 kick and punt returns were the fourth-most in the NFL. Webster was an active special teams returner, averaging 21.7 yards per kick return and 7.4 yards per punt return. With the loss of Cordarrelle Patterson in the offseason, the Bears needed a player, like Webster, who is active in the return game. Hopefully, he can pick off where Patterson left off, as a top returner in football.

Webster had an impressive preseason

0ea61df80a4e5efceed56f744efd39d0

Webster might have not made the 53-man roster for the 49ers, but he still had an impressive preseason. Webster played both wide receiver and returned punts and kicks for the team. In preseason, Webster had 2 catches for 18 yards. On special teams, he returned 4 kicks for 89 yards and 1 punt return for 19 yards. https://twitter.com/MaxMarkhamNFL/status/1433106590496792577?s=20 Webster was a front-runner to make the 49ers but surprisingly didn't. After watching some of his highlights, this has the potential to be a big steal for the Bears.

Is Webster the kick/punt returner of the future?

61e0b42d559c231ebd4d2e55bf52c1a4

Though we've only seen one full NFL season from Webster as a returner, there is something Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace saw that they liked. There's no telling whether he will strickly return kicks or punts – or both, but Webster fills a need for the team. Another thing with Webster was the fact that he was a solid wide receiver in college. If there are injuries and a need for him to step up, he can do so. He hasn't been asked to do that yet, but we saw the abilities he has during preseason. For now, it looks like he'll play on special teams. When Tarik Cohen went down with his season-ending knee injury last season, the Bears struggled returning punts. If Webster can stay healthy and build on his 2020 season, he could be the returner of the future. If he struggles, there's a good chance we'll see multiple guys return kicks and punts – with potentially Dazz Newsome coming off the practice squad to do so. Agree, but I think the LT/RT conversation is overplayed. Khalil plays on that side most of the time, pretty important guy to block. Hell, OG is just as important week one, so maybe play him there because of Donald.

To a degree it is but for a right handed QB the left side is always gonna be his blindside where you really don't want any surprises coming at you looking to break you in two.  At least Pace seemed to agree that Borom will keep working behind Peters at LT.

As for Donald that's gonna be up to Whitehair to handle.  Daniels actually did a good job blocking him a couple of year ago so we'll see how Whitehair approaches it.  He can probably get some help from Mustipher who won't have a NT playing in the Zero Gap.

The Jimmy Graham deal just got "better", and I am being sarcastic with that.

I saw that.   It looks stupid as heck.  I refuse to ever stress about salary cap again though.

If Cowboys can sign Cooper, Prescott, Lawrence and Elliot all FAs around same time and top of market players and Tampa Bay can resign everyone and New Orleans can resign everyone for years on end

- then virtually anything can be done if there is a will to do it.   Cap stress can always be kicked into future years because there is always a future.

The NFL must have hired the same analysts the government does to do long term fiscal planning.  But in a certain way it's not wrong as long as the cap keeps increasing just as we can buy a more costly home if our income is increasing and the government more debt as long as the GDP is healthy and increasing or will increase in the future.

The problems only hit when there's a regression.

Don’t get me started on govt. policy.

All I will say here is the laws of economics don’t care if you are Democrat or Republican or what you wish would happen or utopian dreams.

Ignore them at your peril.  Or my peril I guess since I live here too.

New Orleans just went through cap hell this offseason. Tampa is selling out to win another Super Bowl.

You cannot kick it into the future forever. If that were the case, the Bears wouldn't have cut Leno and Fuller. Eventually players get old. Eventually you run out of expensive salaries to redistribute into bonus money.
