Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery.jpg

I have the #6 odds in this draft, but my pick is top 5 protected so I don't want it to move up.  Also it would be best if no one after me jumps me.  Ideal scenario is picking 6th. The top 5 odds are:

1.       Cavaliers (14.0%)

2.       Raptors (14.0%)

3.       Kings (14.0%)

4.       Heat (12.5%)

5.       Pacers (10.5%)

Who’s it going to be…..

The Rockets pick jumped from 7 into the top 4.  That means my pick fell to 7.  The Heat fell to 6.  Ouch, Cavs fell to 5th.  The Rockets will pick 4th, which sucks because this is my original pick.  The Pacers pick 3rd.  Kings are 2nd.  That means the Raptors have won the lottery.

2022 NBA Draft

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 7 overall

I only have 1 pick this year, but its a pretty solid one.  I'm kind of in the same boat as last year, I'm just looking for BPA.

There's no consensus #1 here so I'm curious what the Raptors will do with the top pick.  So the Raptors take PG Malik Pollard (74) at #1.  He's an undersized guard, and at that Overall isn't a great top pick.  The Kings take SG Willie Floyd (76), he has a great wingspan and potential rating, I think he's the best player in this class.  At 3 the Pacers take SG Bryan Nealy (75).  The Rockets for some reason trade #4 (which was my pick) to the Raptors for OG Anunoby and Luke Kennard.  Good if I'm getting screwed out of my pick at least the Rockets did something stupid with it.  The Raptors select PG Lou Dennis with the pick.  At 5 the Cavaliers take PF Cody Park.  The Heat trade #6 overall to the Jazz for Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdonovic.  Wow another terrible trade, plus this gets the Jazz a pick back in this class.  With the pick the Jazz select PG Elton Lewis.

Here are the top players available at 7:

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
4 C Glenn Lambert 7'0" 246 7'1" Arizona St 76 A-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B+ C+ C- B+ F D- A- C- C

Lambert is a plodder with size (42 LQ, 59 SPD, 43 ACC, 61 VERT).  He's a traditional big who plays interior defense and rebounds.  He does have Pick & Roller, Putback Boss, Break Starter, Box, and Rim Protector badges.  Those are some of the most desirable badges for a defensive Center.  Ultimately I don't see him as an upgrade over Precious.

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
7 SG Noah Hampton 6'3" 203 6'5" England 72^2 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B+ C- A- D- B- C D- B- B+

Hampton doesn't have great length, but he can shoot and play perimeter defense.  He has pretty good athleticism (99 LQ, 90 SPD, 74 ACC, 99 VERT) and has the Acrobat and Contact Finisher badges (not ideal, these are more Slasher type badges and his size leans more towards a shooter).  But he's also a Eurostash that won't come over for 2 years.  I'm not sure I have the time to wait for more help, especially with a top 10 pick.

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
8 SF/PF Dana Cox 6'10" 259 6'10" FSU 75 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B+ C C- D C- D- D- C- A-

Cox has elite size for the position and is a high end athlete (71 LQ, 99 SPD, 88 ACC, 94 VERT).  He only has one badge, the Fastbreak Finisher badge.  He's not much of a shooter, and is a terrible interior defender and rebounder.  He's listed as a possible PF but he's definitely a 3 and should play on the perimeter.  He definitely has upside and should develop a decent shot eventually.

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
10 SG Loren Booker 6'5" 211 6'11" Central FL 72 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ C+ B D- B D D- B- B+

Booker has excellent length for a 2 guard, and his athleticism (99 LQ, 93 SPD, 89 ACC, 78 VERT) is one of the best in this class.  He projects as a quality 3 & D 2 Guard.  His only 2 badges are the Interceptor and Pick Dogder badges.

So I think Lambert is not in the discussion here.  I like Hampton, but I don't want to wait 2 years for someone.  So for me it comes down to Cox vs Booker.  Ultimately I don't think I can pass up someone who is 6'10" 259 lbs with 99 speed.

With the 7th Pick in the NBA Draft the Detroit Pistons Select:

SF Dana Cox, Florida State

zlqr0zg.jpg

I really his upside in the long run.  Doumbouya only has 1 more year on his deal and will probably want a lot of money (which I don't think he's worth).  Cox will replace him as the starting SF eventually.

Well that's my only pick in this class.

Player/Team Options

C Precious Achiuwa (81) – $2.84 mil – He's arguably my best player right now.

PG Killian Hayes (80) - $5.84 - he's my starting PG.

PF Saddiq Bey (79) - $2.96 mil - He's a good shooter off of the bench.

C Isaiah Stewart (79) - $3.44 mil - He's a solid backup.

SF Sekou Doumbouya (78) - $5.54 mil - He's a quality wing.

SF Deividas Sirvydis (75) - $1.78 mil - quality depth player

SG Damien Jones (73) - $2.01 mil - 2nd round pick in first class, excellent defender.

Qualifying Offers

PF Wenyen Gabriel (71) - $2.02 – he doesn't complain about not playing so he's a good bottom of the roster guy.

*TRADE*

Nuggets Receive

C Dwight Powell

Pistons Receive

2024 Nuggets 1st, unprotected

The Nuggets are completely capped out and need to add depth to their bench.  They do that by trading me a future first for Powell who's on an expiring contract, so he can give them some solid play this year then come off of their books.

*TRADE*

Hornets Receive

SF Bogdan Bogdanovic (78)

2023 Warriors 2nd Round

Pistons Receive

2023 Hornets 1st Round, Top 10 protected

The Hornets are coming off of a playoff run (they finished 6th in the East) but somehow traded Gordon Hayward to the Trailblazers so they're hurting at the wing now.  Bogdanovic gives them a veteran wing for their rotation to try to make the playoffs again.  They get a 2nd back in the same class so its basically just a pick swap.

Free Agency

SG Marcus Smart (79) agreed to a 2-year, $26.01 mil contract.  He's a high end defender that can start for me at the 2 Guard spot.  I haven't been able to find anyone to fill this spot yet and Smart brings a lot of leadership to the team.  He can mentor Damien Jones on a lot of defensive badges.

PG Max Campbell (67) agreed to a 3-year, $6.05 mil contract.  He's an undrafted rookie.  Great athleticism, pass first guard.

PF Devontae Cacok (72) agreed to a 2-year, $5.00 mil contract.  Undersized but a great rebounder.  Provides depth.

SG Wilson Singleton (71) agreed to a 2-year, $6.01 mil contract.  He was a 2nd round pick in 2021.  He's a slasher with good size and athleticism.  Depth player.

Major Contract Signings:

SF Michael Porter Jr. – Nuggets – 4 years, $123.90 mil

PG Luka Doncic – Mavericks – 4 years, $148.67 mil

C Deandre Ayton - Suns - 4 years, $123.90 mil

C Wendell Carter Jr. - Bulls - 3 years, $74.64 mil

PG Trae Young - Hawks - 4 years, $148.67 mil

SF Mikal Bridges - Knicks - 3 years, $62.29 mil

SF Kevin Durant - Nets - 5 years, $255.90 mil (wow)

SF Jimmy Butler - Heat - 5 years, $221.45 mil

SF TJ Warren - Pacers - 5 years, $156.20 mil

PG Stephen Curry - Lakers - 4 years, $200.01 mil (WOAH, remember though Lebron has retired, still)

SG Bradley Beal - Wizards - 4 years, $173.45 mil

SG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander - 4 years, $123.90 mil

PG Kyrie Irving - Wizards - 4 years, $173.45 mil (interesting)

PF Jaren Jackson Jr. - Kings - 4 years, $117.73 mil

SG Zach Lavine - Raptors - 4 years, $148.67 mil

PG Collin Sexton - Cavaliers - 4 years, $110.45 mil

C Mitchell Robinson - Knicks - 4 years, $112.09 mil

C/PF Isaiah Stewart 79 A- 21 2 4 $3.44

Marcus Smart is the new starter at the 2 Guard spot.  I'm going to keep Doumbouya as the starter at SF to showcase him, but his contract is expiring and I'll probably shop him at the deadline.  That will let Cox enter the starting lineup.  Rickey Stone needs to continue to develop.  I'm going to try to get Damien Jones and Dana Cox a lot of minutes off of the bench.

Player Mentors

SG Damien Jones mentored by SG M Smart - Clamps, Off-Ball Pest

PF R Stone mentored by SG Wilson Singleton - Contact Finisher, Lob City Finisher (this is weird because Singleton is only 20 years old, but he has silver in both of these)

PG K Hayes mentored by PG T Satoransky - Pass Fake Maestro

C P Achiuwa mentored by SF Doumbouya - Lob City Finisher

Coaching System

Scheme: Defense  (I have been running Perimeter Centric, but my guys can't shoot, I'm going to focus on playing good defense and getting points in transition)

Offensive Focus: Get to the Basket

Offensive Tempo: Shoot at Will

Offensive Rebounding: Some Crash, Others Get Back

Defensive Focus: Limit Perimeter Shots

Defensive Aggression: Play Physical Defense

Defensive Rebounding: Run in Transition

This is a pretty substantial difference from the scheme settings I've been running the past 2 years.  Lets see if it helps.

Solid class, maybe not as strong as the last two but solid.  There's no consensus #1 guy.  I like Alec Vernie and Donte Elliot the best after looking at their attributes.
