NBA 2K21 Franchise - Pistons GM

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATE

Well I'm an absolutely awful 18-36 at the deadline, which is the worst record in the league.  I'm 10 games behind the 8 seed so playoffs aren't happening.  I'm not sure what happened?  Its possible the scheme I picked is just bad.  I also lack scoring, which I knew was an issue, I just didn't know it was this much of an issue.  I need to find an elite scorer in this upcoming draft class.

Satoransky and Doumbouya are my two expiring contracts.  Doumbouya told me he refuses to sign a contract extension, so I guess he's getting dealt.

Well Satoransky isn't worth anything on the trade block.

*TRADE*

Lakers Receive

SF Sekou Doumbouya (80)

Pistons Receive

SF Nassir Little (76)

Lakers 2026 1st, unprotected

This is not a great return for Doumbouya but most of the offers I got including very pricey players in return.  Lebron retired last offseason but the Lakers signed Steph Curry to play with Anthony Davis, Doumbouya will help that duo on the wing.  Little's contract is expiring.

Casey had to go.  Brought in a higher end Scout and Trainer too.

You have Sean Lee as a trainer, your team is going to injury unlucky.

End of the Season – Year 3

Final Record 30-52, 15th place in East, and 26 games out of first place.  4 games worse than last year.  I tied for the 2nd worst record in the NBA.  Man this rebuild is not going well.

Season Stats

Season Stats - Year 3
Points Per Game Rebounds Per Game Assists Per Game Steals Per Game Blocks Per Game
C Precious Achiuwa 14.8 C Precious Achiuwa 8.7 PG Killian Hayes 4.9 C Precious Achiuwa 0.8 C Precious Achiuwa 1.3

PF Rickey Stone 7.3 PF Saddiq Bey 3.5 SG Marcus Smart 2.1 SF Dana Cox 0.7 SG Wilson Singleton 0.4

Precious is the only player that got better.  His scoring, rebounds and blocks were all up from last year.  Hayes scored more points but had less assists.  Stone continues to disappoint.  I brought in Marcus Smart to be a veteran leader and he contributed practically nothing.

Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery.jpg

I have the #2 odds in this draft. The top 5 odds are:

1.       Grizzlies via Kings (14.0%)

2.       Pistons (14.0%)

3.       Warriors (14.0%)

4.       Clippers via Thunder (12.5%) I'm assuming Thunder can choose to swap for this if they want?

5.       Trailblazers (10.5%)

Who’s it going to be…..

The Pacers jumped up into the top 4 picks and landed #4.  Clippers have #3.  The Thunder have #2.  I won the Lottery!

2023 NBA Draft

nbadraftlogo.png

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 1 overall

Round 1 - 20 overall

Round 2 - 48 overall

So I landed #1, but unfortunately this is a class that doesn't have a franchise player.  It's not often that I get the #1 overall pick and don't know who I'm going to take.  There's no consensus top player, so let's look at who's available:

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
1 SG Ken O'Connor 6'4" 177 6'6" Missouri St 76 A+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B+ A- A D- D+ C D- C B+

First up is Ken O'Connor.  He's listed as the #1 prospect, and has good athleticism with 68 LQ, 84 SPD, 97, 84 VERT.  Those are good numbers, not great numbers.  He has average size for a 2 guard.  He has no badges.  He can't play defense.  He can shoot.  I'm not blown away.

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
2 PG/SG Alec Vernie 6'1" 186 6'4" Australia 77 A+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
A+ A+ A+ D- D+ B- D- c B+

Vernie's player archetype is listed as "Scoring Machine", and I believe it.  I don't think I've ever seen a prospect with A+ Inside Scoring, Mid Range Scoring, and 3 Point Shooting before.  I need points and this guy can get them.  He is tied for the highest potential rating in this class.  He has 87 LQ, 99 SPD, 87 ACC, 83 VERT.  He has the Fancy Footwork, Tear Dropper, Catch & Shoot, Corner Specialist, Ice in Veins and Downhill badges.  His only downside is his size.  At his size he probably needs to play PG, but if he's not much of a passer idk if that's his ideal position.  I guess Trae Young is short and doesn't pass either.

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
8 PG Donte Elliot 6'1" 207 6'7" Villanova 78 A-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- C- A- D- A+ C D- C+ A-

Elliot is similar size to Vernie, but a different kind of player.  He can score, but not as well as Vernie.  His athletic profile is 92 LQ, 95 SPD, 94 ACC, 91 VERT, which is probably the best in the class.  He's also an exceptional perimeter defender.  He has the Acrobat, Lighting Reflexes, Pick Dodger, Pick Pocket, and Tireless Defender badges.  He's a better 2 way player than Vernie, but does it outweigh that offense?

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
9 SG Roberto Batista 6'6" 186 7'1" Spain 73^1 A-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
A+ C- B- D- C D- D- D- A-

Batista is a Eurostash that plans on coming over in 1 season.  He has 66 LQ, 92 SPD, 94 ACC, 99 VERT.  He's on this list because he has elite size and length for a 2 guard.  He also has the Contact Finisher and Fastbreak Finisher badges.  He's an elite slasher who needs to work on his shooting.  An ok defender but needs to work on that too.  His D- IQ rating does concern me though.

If you want to know why Richard Geiger wasn't listed despite his A+ Potential, its because his athleticism is only 64 LQ, 85 SPD, 72 ACC, 70 VERT.

So I think this comes down to Vernie vs. Elliot.  Now that isn't exactly true, because I think I could trade down and pick up future pick and still get Elliot.  So really the question is, Is Vernie better than Elliot + future 1st.  Elliot is the better 2 way player, but Vernie feels like he's a generational time scorer.  Like an Allen Iverson type.  I need scoring bad.  I think he has to be the pick.

With the 1st Pick in the NBA Draft the Detroit Pistons Select:

PG Alec Vernie, Australia

aDBe8ec.jpg

I'm not sure if he'll play PG or SG but he will be a day 1 starter.  Killian Hayes is 6'5" so he may move to SG, but Hayes' badges are mostly passing ones.  Might have to play Vernie as an undersized 2 guard.

SG Kevin O'Connor (77) goes #2 overall to the Thunder.  The Clippers select SG Clyde Cox (78) at 3, he wasn't really on my radar because he was slow.  Dang, Elliot (78) goes #4 to the Pacers, great pick for them.  I was considering trading up for him if he fell a bit.  Good thing I didn't trade down I might not have gotten him.  SG Jesse Hardin (75) rounds out the top 5 to the Grizzlies.

Time to sim to 20.

Ok time to reset and see who's on the board here.  I really hate how the scouting is in this game.  I only have 2 scouted players remaining in the entire draft class, and one of those is a 2nd round prospect.  So essentially I only have 1 option here.

With the 20th Pick in the NBA Draft the Detroit Pistons Select:

PG Guy Thompson, NJIT

3YCL1HB.jpg

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
24 PG Guy Thompson 6'1" 195 6'7" NJIT 72 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- A- A F D- C- F C- B+

A backup PG prospect, he gives me more shooting.  He's a good athlete too with 86 LQ, 96 SPD, 80 ACC, 96 VERT.  He has the Clutch Shooter, Volume Shooter, and Chase Down Artist badges.  I really needed to upgrade my guards so taking 2 in this class works out.

I'm on the clock again way deep in the 2nd round.

So I have no one scouted this late. The question is do I take a stab here or just trade it.

With the 48th Pick in the NBA Draft the Detroit Pistons Select:

SF Fausto Garibaldi, Italy

eVnBDia.jpg

I figured I'd take a stab on a Eurostash here.  He will come over in 1 year.  I don't have him scouted so I can't tell him much about him.  His archetype is "Prospect" which means he's probably pretty raw.  He does have a nice 6'9" 247 lb frame with a 7'1" wingspan.

That wraps up this draft.  I added some much needed scoring in this class.

Player/Team Options

C Precious Achiuwa (83) – $4.38 mil – He's arguably my best player right now.

PG Killian Hayes (84) - $7.41 - he's my starting PG.

PF Saddiq Bey (80) - $4.56 mil - He's a good shooter off of the bench.

C Isaiah Stewart (80) - $5.27 mil - He's a solid backup.

PF Rickey Stone (79) - $4.76 mil - He was my first draft pick.

Qualifying Offers

PF Wenyen Gabriel (72) - $2.75 mil – he doesn't complain about not playing so he's a good bottom of the roster guy.

SF Nassir Little (78) - $6.60 mil - I figure I can try to trade him.

SG Damien Jones (73) - $2.52 mil - Good backup defender.

SF Deividas Sirvydis (75) - $2.23 mil - he doesn't complain about not playing.

Free Agency

I don't have any roster spots to sign anyone.  I debated dumping Marcus Smart for a pick and signing a replacement but I'm going to keep him around as my 3rd Guard.

SF Little got offered a multi-year deal worth $10+ per year so I let him go.

All 3 other players signed their qualifying offers.

Major Contract Signings:

PG Ja Morant – Grizzlies – 4 years, $150.57 mil

SG RJ Barrett – Knicks – 4 years, $125.47 mil

PF Zion Williamson - Pelicans - 4 years, $125.47 mil

C Nikola Vucevic - Magic - 5 years, $210.74 mil (ouch, why?)

SG James Harden - Bulls - 3 years, $142.26 mil (wow that is pushing $50 mil per season)

C Nikola Jokic - Rockets - 4 years, $175.66 mil (big steal by the Rockets)

PG Malcolm Brogdon - Suns - 4 years, $117.30 mil

PF Lauri Markkanen - Hornets - 4 years, $99.30 mil

PF Aaron Gordon - Grizzlies - 3 years, $53.19 mil

PF Marvin Bagley - Cavaliers - 3 years, $77.01 mil

PG Kemba Walker - Celtics - 4 years, $115.76 mil

C Christian Wood - Cavaliers - 4 years, $100.17 mil (this makes no sense, they drafted that stud Center #1 overall a few seasons ago)

I'm liking this team.  Vernie brings some much needed scoring to the team.  I'm also going to move Bey to the starting lineup to help the spacing with that group.  Stone will play the 6th man role and still get a lot of minutes.  Hayes' badges really blossomed over the offseason, he has a bunch of Gold caliber passing badges now.  He's definitely a PG.  Dana Cox also becomes the full time starter this year.  His speed should be a weapon.  The primary bench will be PG Thompson, SG, Smart, SG Jones, PF Stone and C Stewart.  Smart might get dealt at some point.

Coaching System

Scheme: Perimeter Centric

Offensive Focus: Get Shooters Open

Offensive Tempo: Shoot at Will

Offensive Rebounding: Some Crash, Others Get Back

Defensive Focus: Limit Perimeter Shots

Defensive Aggression: Play Physical Defense

Defensive Rebounding: Some Crash, Others Run

The Defense system did not work last year.  Back to an offensive set.  Vernie will need to carry this offense, but Bey in the starting lineup will help spacing.
