QBs drafted top 5 since 2005

Just looking at the Quarterbacks who were drafted in the top 5 since 2005. There have been 20 in total, but I'll leave Burrow and Tagovailoa out of this as it's too early to make much of an assessment on them (although one has suffered a serious knee injury and the other is potentially being shopped by his team).

That leaves the following 18:

Alex Smith

, Vince Young

, Jamarcus Russell

, Matt Ryan

, Matthew Stafford

, Mark Sanchez

, Sam Bradford

, Cam Newton

, Andrew Luck

, Robert Griffin

, Blake Bortles

, Jameis Winston

, Marcus Mariota

, Jared Goff

, Carson Wentz

, Mitchell Trubisky

, Baker Mayfield

, Kyler Murray

Looking through the list you would have to say it's very.... underwhelming. The only player I would say who has genuinely met/exceeded expectations would be Matt Ryan. Andrew Luck was a good player but didn't really live up the hype and is now out of the league.

Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford and Alex Smith have all hovered in that QB 10-20 range all their careers (except for one exceptional season from Cam).

Mayfield and Murray have both shown promise to become top-10 type QBs (but not elite as of yet).

The remaining 12 QBs (67%) are a mixture of busts, early retirements, average players and now career backu-ups.

For guys taken in the top 5 you'd expect much more. Is it players being drafted to bad teams? Players just over drafted? The draft being a crap shoot?

If Matthew Stafford can be drafted to literally the worst team ever and be a top 12 QB there’s no “bad organization” excuse for any of these guys to not be at least competent. We simply overrated them as prospects
