TOUCAN
Let’s just have fun with this. What does our QB depth chart look like opening day next year. If a trade include compensation. If a draftee state the round. If a FA name the contract.
LoganF89
Smith cut or retires Trade a 5th for Mariota that can turn into a conditional 4th depending on playing time resign Heinicke select Kellen Mond in the 3rd Mariota, Heinicke, Mond

lavar703
We’ll swing and miss on all the QBs out there and then sign Newton. This is so clearly obvious lol

e16bball
What I think will happen: Cam Newton (2/$20M, incentive laden) Kyle Allen Taylor Heinicke What I want to happen: Sam Darnold (SF 3rd + future conditional 3rd) Kyle Allen Taylor Heinicke
MikeT14
I'm not sold on the Cam to Washington idea like some of you are. I could be wrong of course.

ARTMONK HOF
I would give our 3rd rd pick and S.Sims for Darnold. Edited February 9, 2021 by ARTMONK HOF
aceinthehouse
If we don't land Rodgers & my prediction is wrong....(we'll see) Put me down for Trey Lance @#19 Not my #1 choice on what do at QB, but he's the best type of prospect for this offense. which is a mobile QB who can win games with his arm & legs. starter= Taylor Heinicke backup= Trey Lance 3rd string= Allen/Montez Edited February 9, 2021 by aceinthehouse

That’s more than we gave up for Alex Smith coming off a season where he led the league in passer rating. Darnold is coming off a season where he was clearly outplayed by Joe Flacco’s corpse. What do you think they’re going to get for him? The guy has the exact same career passer rating as Dwayne Haskins has put up in his starts. And it’s not even like he has a great contract situation, as you get him for one cheap season and then have to either extend him or pay him about $25M for 2022 on the 5th-year option. If anything, that price might well be an overpay. Yes, he’s still young and he still has a lot of talent. But a guy like Kellen Mond is younger, also has legit NFL talent, will cost peanuts, is under control for 4 years, and (as an added bonus) hasn’t sucked in the NFL for 3 seasons to the extent that he’s a reclamation project by age 23. And you wouldn’t have to throw in an extremely valuable conditional 3rd to get him with your 3rd round pick. Honestly, I think I may actually have talked myself out of any interest in Darnold. At least at that price. Edited February 9, 2021 by e16bball

And that is a garbage list of QBs.
e16bball
While we’re on the topic of the next QB, here’s a concept that I don’t agree with: that the QB in this system needs to be mobile. I don’t see any reason why this system in particular would require mobility from its QB. Obviously, mobility is always a good thing, in any system — no one is saying “wow, this whole offense is going to fall apart if our QB can move around and run effectively.” All other things being equal, you’d always prefer a QB with great mobility. But this offense doesn’t seem to require it. There’s almost no designed runs. There aren’t a lot of bootlegs and designed rollouts. Much of the goal seems to be making quick, short throws intended to place the emphasis on YAC more than holding the ball a long time and surveying downfield. I don’t think there’s any reason why we’d need a good runner to execute this offense — though again, it always adds a very important dimension if you can get it. I think it looked like we needed mobility at the position at times because all our receivers but one have serious trouble separating and because our OL struggled on occasion to hold up for a while. That combination meant that our QBs had to dodge, dip, duck, dive, and dodge in order to keep plays alive long enough for somebody to come open — but I don’t think it’s actually part of the system’s design. With better players in the receiving corps and on the OL, I think that will become less and less necessary.
