They entered the world together. They’re leaving the football world together, too.

Long-time NFL centers Maurkice and Mike Pouncey are retiring from the NFL.

Maurkice was a first-round pick of the Steelers in 2010. He’s a three-time first-team All-Pro and a nine-time Pro Bowler. The Dolphins made Mike Pouncey a first-round pick in 2011. He spent seven years in Miami and three with the Chargers, making it to the Pro Bowl four times.

Maurkice’s departure leaves a huge hole in the middle of the offensive line for the Steelers. It also could be a factor in whether quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who has indicated a desire to play for the Steelers again in 2021, actually does.

Yeah, it’s real tough s*** for us, but we knew it was coming.

Going to be hard for us to replace Pouncey because he was a natural talent at center.

Doesn’t make total sense to retire on this kind of note (snapping the ball over Ben’s head in a playoff game),  but I respect his decision.

Maurkice had a nice career, but outside of his years with Munchack, was never that great.   He made the pro bowl several years he didnt deserve it.   He was a good pass blocker but a sub par run blocker.    He was a big reason for our struggles running this season.

Thanks to Maurkice for being a good player for us, but his time was up.

And you do realize that LeVeon Bell was our RB the whole time Munchak was with us?

Nothing against Mike Munchak whatsoever, because he substantially improved our o-line from how it was in the late 2000s.

But, Bell was at his prime and we haven’t had a franchise RB since then, so you really can’t make the conclusion that Pouncey was never good any time outside of the Munchak era.

What you said is just hogwash.

He was already the best center in the league as a rookie and made first team in his second year.

Where was Munchak then??

And what did Bell ever do behind a non Munchack OLine?

James Conner was just as good as Bell behind Munchs OLine.   The entire OLine took a step back after Munch left.    Thats not remotely debatable.

Yet you said absolutely nothing to prove me wrong.

Its cool though.   I prefer when you disagree with me.

He was never the best center in the league and made the pro bowl several years he was extremely average.     His best years, by far, were under Munchack.   Munch made guys like Kelcin Beachum and Marcus Gilbert look great too.   Pouncey, DeCastro and Villaneuva all dropped in efficiency blocking after he left.

Are they beat up and done, or just leaving the game on their terms?

A little bit of both.  Maurkice has had two knee injuries and could be closing in on some much worse issues.  Mike has had hip problems the last few seasons and might be in for a hip replacement a few years post retirement.  So I think they knew it would be coming so they rather go out when they can rather than being forced out.
