I keep seeing "so and so team doesnt need JJ watt because they have good DEs already"

Do people STILL not understand the difference between a 34 DE and a 43DE??? Watt is not an edge rusher. He is an interior defender. figure it out people

Chicken wings and blue and red hearts in one tweet?!

Welcome to Buffalo JJ!!

/sarcasm

haha love the sarcasm...it is hilarious seeing all these sports bloggers try to come up with their theories based on what is posted and how deep they dive down the rabbit hole. Wings and colored hearts. This tweet alone got the odds from 12-1 to now 4-1 he is in a bills jersey.

he actually has the versatility to play both. He is  on the border of a 4-3 LDE at 278 and just big enough to be the 3T IDT. He played the 3-4 5T so I agree just because a team has good DEs doesnt mean they wouldnt find away to get him on the field. Having a strong defensive mind hc who can create exotic plays would allow him to be on the field as much as he can handle inside or on the outside on either schemes whether it is 3-4 or 4-3.

I think between finally getting the HC right, all the guys coming off IR, the OL coming back in tact, top 5 running back and best tandem, being able to retain Higgins, and a boatload of cap to fix the defensive issues they are gonna win the AFCN....and trust me, saying that makes me punch a wall.

Maybe they will be up to win the division but the schedule is a lot different then 2020. Playing AFC West and NFC North along with playing against the Pats. Is tougher then having to play a NFC East and AFC South. Bengals twice, Houston, Philly, Jax, Dallas, and NYJ thats 7 games  of the top 10 picks in the draft this year. No knock on the Browns cause they play who they are given but the SOS had a lot in their favor in 2020 where 2021 schedule looks a lot harder.

I understand he can move around, but he is a 3T in a 43 or a 34 DE. You arent going to play him on the edge very often in a 43, just like he would rarely/never play OLB in a 34

My overall point is that it just shows how ignorant the media/fans are because they look at DE under his position and then think all DEs are the same. I just saw something saying "washington doesnt need JJwatt because they have chase young and montez sweat" just... no

JJ played edge quite a bit, actually. Definitely not confined to being an interior linemen, especially if you’re going to play a 4-3 that has JJ playing the strong side with the LEO going wide on the other side.

Prime explosiveness might not be there anymore but you also probably don’t want him inside getting mashed 24/7 when he’s getting more beaten up as the years go.

I agree he wouldnt play 3-4 OLB, as he is ideally a 5T 3-4 DE, but he is ideal weight and size to be a 4-3 LDE, he isn't going to base solely on the inside at the 3T but could be utilized there on certain plays. Mario Williams was based out of the Bills 4-3 at the edge and was rarely used inside, he is close to height and weight as JJ Watt. For a better understanding Arik Armsteadt plays 4-3 LDE he is an inch taller then watt but the same weight. Typical 3T are around 300+ and if they are lighter its because they are between 6-6'2 while Watt is 6'5 and 280-290. He has shown he is explosive off the line this past year on the outside in specific plays which led to several plays for a loss, so he definitely has the ability to play outside in a 43. WFT has a solid dline inside and outside I dont think he is a need there just simply because their dline is already nasty and the real reason he wont go there is because they arent ready to win now with out having a capable franchise qb. Washington wont be spending the money on him because of the front 4 already locked in.

To me Watt has to be looking at the stability of the franchise with HC/GM, a capable franchise qb to take them to the post-season and a respectable defense in which he could help get to the next level in order to be a Superbowl contender next year.

At this point in his career, he'd benefit from being a 3rd down specialist where teams line up 4 stand up DEs half the time anyway these days.

He is indeed a 34 DE. At his peak he was used in pretty much every position, and he was dominant wherever. He was even used as a Wide 9. He did a LOT of his damage from the 5Tech

pff tracked 2015:

Watt and Bennett still spend a lot of snaps inside, but their biggest spike is in the same area as the true edge defenders like Pierre-Paul. What makes Watt even more interesting is that he has the biggest spike of the group in the 9-technique alignment, the widest rush-alignment there is. That spike isn’t just the biggest of this group, but is one of the biggest in the league. Watt spends more time rushing from the wide-9 alignment than many of the players you would immediately think top that list.
