Lack of Cowboys-49ers games on MNF during Frank/Al/Dan era

Recommended Posts

The "Frank and Al and Dan" era of Monday Night Football was the first era I was exposed to.

During much of the 1990s portion of this era, the Cowboys and 49ers were often among the best teams in the NFC. They were rewarded with regular season meetings with each every every year between 1993-97, which coincided with the last 5 years Gifford, Michaels, and Dierdorf worked MNF games.

And not a single one of these games was given to ABC, even though the best MNF intros came from 1990-97. Thus, Al Michaels has still yet to call a game between these teams (especially since a 2020 meeting was flexed out of SNF on NBC), while John Madden worked on this rivalry many times. As much respect I have for Madden and Pat Summerall, I hold "Frank and Al and Dan" in even higher regard.
