NFL to have 3 game preseason, 17 game regular season for 2021

This is a pretty myopic outlook. Physical health is not all about immediate injuries. Long term health is more the concern with this move. A player who played every year at 17 games and retires at age 35 has played almost a full season more than someone who did that just this season. It could shorten careers. Hopefully the boon in cheddar will trickle down to the players so I am not too worried about earning potential.

Don't worry...we both know it won't.

The change I want to see is bar any division that can't produce a winning record from the playoffs. So, in this 17 game season, if no team in a division has 9 wins, they all stay home and those spots go to better teams in other divisions.

It will never happen, but I hate seeing .500 or lower teams in the playoffs. It's disgusting. 🤢

If they actually just added a 2nd bye week, they'd get the same result of an extra TV week.   It wouldn't get them an extra game of local gate - but the on-site ticket revenue is only about 15 percent of the income stream now (and stadium/concessions add another 10, so let's say 25%), while TV revenue is now estimated at close to 60 percent (up from 50 percent in 2015).   So we all know this isn't about safety, it's about extra revenue - increasing BOTH gate & TV revenue.   An extra bye week would drop 1 preseason game, but gain 1 week of regular-season TV money.    But this solution adds on both ends (as gate & concession usually higher locally for reg season games), albeit at the expense of more wear & tear and risk to players (since starters rarely play more than 1-2 halves nowadays in preseason).

The NFLPA is so bad that they didn't have a clause that kept the schedule at 16 games, so this could be negotiated.   Getting an extra cheque for 1/16 of annual salary doesn't represent the additional risk (and it's just the base salary that gets the bump, not the extra roster / signing bonus etc.).  SMH @ their total ineffectual status as a player group.

Funny thing is that the NFL did actually have two BYE weeks back in 1993.

And yeah, this isn't about player safety. NFL wants every last dollar.

- Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and Tom Brady all would have reached 5k this year if there was an extra game, hell Dak Prescott would have had it too had he not gotten injured without the 17th game

- in 2019, Shaq Barrett had 19.5 sacks and Chandler Jones had 19 in 16 games. Both easily could have gone had 20 in a 17 game season.

You understand that 4823, 4740, and 4633 are less than 400 yards from 5k? And that 19.5 and 19 is 1 sack from 20?

Point is, an extra game worth of stats probably does push them over the edge, or at least gives them a chance. But they already easily cleared your 4k and 15 threshold, so your point about that benchmark holds no water.

So with the extra crossover game, does the entire conference get the extra home game or road game?  Or does each division have a split?  Because heads will roll when a playoff spot is decided who got an extra home game vs extra road game.  I would assume it would be an AFC and NFC thing to avoid all that.  Or will they try to get neutral site games?

So we have 17 games and 7 playoff seeds... whats next participation ribbons? This is turning out to be a NBA and MLB type season. It is going to be watered down instead of resting players week 17 they will do it week 18 and they could essentially ease players in to week 1 without having to start everyone right away. Not a fan of this money hungry move by Goodell and owners. They clearly are doing this to make more revenue off the tv rights

And more revenue overall is more to the players.

But you just answered my point....

"The additional game won't alter the current scheduling formula, just the 17th game will be a slight tweak. The preseason will be reduced as a result and the expected number is three.  A two-game preseason is also reportedly in play, but that would alter the NFL's 20-game formula of having 10 home and 10 road games per team (regular season and preseason). If the NFL keeps the 20-game formula, 16 teams will have 10 home games (8 regular season and two preseason), while the other 16 will also have 10 -- but in a different format (nine regular season and one preseason). This would rotate each season. "

The better move would be for each team to play a neutral site game in both the preseason and regular season.

All preseason neutral site games would take place in North America (Canada, Mexico, or non-NFL US cities).

The vast majority of neutral site games in the regular season would be incorporated into the NFL International Series, with 8 of these games in London, and one in Mexico CIty guaranteed every year.

The expanded International Series would also feature one game at an European city outside London which rotates from year to year, a game at another Latin American stadium which rotates from year-to-year, and a game at a venue in Asia, Africa, or Australia which rotates from year-to-year.

The International Series would have its television rights acquired by ABC for most games, with games in Europe or Africa being scheduled at 9:30 AM ET, and games in Asia or Australia being scheduled Saturday morning US time (but before 8 AM ET); the latter games would re-air Sunday morning at 9:30 AM local time.

Games in Latin America (or even Montreal) would continue to be part of the MNF package on ESPN.

The remaining 4 neutral site games would take place in a non-NFL US city, or occasionally if the Seahawks or Bills are involved, in Vancouver or Toronto, respectively. TV arrangements for these games would vary, though could be most attractive in primetime.

Alright...I'm gonna blow all y'all's minds...ready?: the league and its b.s. game to the schedule but also adds a bye week. The league gets its extra money-grubbing game, the fans now get two extra weeks of football than before and player safety is at least mitigated.

Just kidding...next season 18 games, no byes.
