Would you pay Baker $40 million a year right now?

What would you do with Baker?

  1. 1. What should we do with Baker?

    • Pay him now. $40 million a year will be a bargain down the road.
    • Wait a year. If he plays great next year, pay him. If we have to pay more than 40, so be it.
    • Wait multiple years (5th year, franchise tag, etc.). Keep our options open as long as possible.

Wanted to get the forum pulse on one of our biggest offseason decisions.

Would you pay Baker now or wait?

For purposes of this discussion, let's use Dak's new contract as the benchmark.  If Baker gets an extension right now, I'd imagine it will be close to Dak's.

Discuss.

I think over the next few years only one QB is set up to make $40m a year and its mahomes. Dak next year is due to make like $75m or something like that but thats because of the weird structure of his contract. It shouldnt reach $40m for a single year after that. I could see Baker getting a nice contract but it shouldnt really come close to Mahomes deal.

I would wait because if you sign him this year, the signing bonus, I believe would affect this year cap or thats at least how I am understanding it

This is why Mike is flanged and you're not. Extend the man yesterday.

This is where I am.

The chances of him going off this year are pretty high, and that just means more money next year.  Get it done now.

Plus, getting Baker's contract done before Lamar and Josh Allen will make them more expensive for the Bills and Ravens to sign.

I'd give him the Dak contract after the 5th year. So 6 years 185 million total.

This seems like a compromise that could reasonably work, spreading the hit and impact out, getting Baker his money, making Baker the good guy, a win for the agent, screwing over the Ravens when they extend Huntley--Lamar ain't it--and benefiting the team overall.

No, the signing bonus doesn't affect the cap until that contract begins. It's different with restructures where you are moving money around but his current cap hit won't change in the meantime, that salary is set. He would receive bonus money now but that's irrelevant, it will affect the cap during the first year of his new deal.

I'd give him 40 but I'd try to get it done for less obviously. I certainly wouldn't fault those that had a lot of questions about him early on wanting to wait. It takes time to earn trust and he has had 2 good seasons out of three which doesn't sound like a sure thing. It took Baker awhile to trust his offensive line this season, it's natural after being let down. But once you believe, things start looking a lot better.

Assuming the 4/160 doesn't kick in until after this year and the 5th year option, then heck yeah. The new TV deal money is gonna kick in and 4/160 is gonna look like a bargain.

It would be, nothing can be changed to the next two years of his contract. For example Mahomes will rake in 7 million in salary this coming year. Baker will make almost 19 million in 2022, much more than Mahomes' 5th year because of where he was drafted.

That’s good to know

Depends on the cap. I think he should be paid more in the $30-$35M range right now

This is where I think Franchise QB money is...Maholms is 40, but he's the outlier......the Cowboys overpayed for Dak....or did I see the Wrong numbers on the Dak Prescott deal?
