Cooley Film Breakdown vs. 49ers

1. Kirk Cousins: A-

He played at a B- grade in the first half, had the int where both he and Davis were bad on the play. Missed Pryor on a TD but cane back the next play and hit Perine as his 5th option. He took one bad Sack where he should have thrown the ball away.

Second half he played great. Problem is the receivers aren’t wining enough and getting open, even Crowder. And when Pryor and Doctson have double moves and are breaking open, Cousins has already made a decision to not go there. They just aren’t on the sane page.

On several plays Crowder ran poor routes. He’s running to shallow of routes sometimes, he ran too shallow of a route by about 5 yards on the pass Kirk threw to Reed which almost resulted in the Jimmie award int. Crowder needed to get more depth and behind the ILB on the play, if he had Reed is open on that pass.

2. Jordan Reed: D+

Bad blocking, allows DEs to constantly cross his face including a S. He’s getting jammed as a blocker, he’s getting jammed by defenders. Niles Paul goal line play is a TD if Reed doesn’t miss his block on Solomon Thomas.

He was much better as a receiver.

Worst game Cooley has seen him play.

3. Vernon Davis: D

Has good plays in the passing game. Had the great Yac on the one vertical ball he caught. Had the fumble and on the int Kirk threw both he and Kirk had bad plays on that play. Vernon ran a bad route, Kirk had a bad pass. Kirk should have taken the check down to Thompson or thrown it away.

Like Reed he was atrocious as a blocker. Embarrassing. We have two horrible blocking TEs and it’s affecting our running game. The OL is blocking well enough but the TEs aren’t, they’re getting beat on almost every play.

4. Lauvao: B-

He is playing well in the run game. Doing pretty well in pass protection, gave up a few late pressures but overall another good game from him.

5. Long: B

Loves his effort. He gets downfield on screens, is pass blocking well - as is the entire OL - is finishing blocks well. Another solid game from Long.

6. Moses: B-

Cooley thinks the reason he started the year off so slow and bad vs the Eagles is becsuse Moses’ ankle must have been bothering him a lot, but there’s also the fact that he went against BRandon Graham that game and just couldn’t handle him one on one.

It’s going to be something they’ll have to keep their eyes on on Monday night becsuse if Moses is struggling against Graham again, they’re going to have to chip Graham with either a back or TE on passing plays.

Ever since that game though, Moses has played well. He does need to be better as a run blocker especially the when asked to come across the line and pick up someone but he’s been much better ever since week 1 at everything.

7. Perine: B+

Showed A little more patience in this game, he was better. Cut a few times too early on a few runs. He had unbalanced line w/ Moses & TWill on same side but cut back to other side abs only got a yard.

Great as a receiver, had the TD reception.

8. Thompson: B+

Is clearly our best running back, shows the most patience. If our TEs and WRs blocked better on the edge he’d probably have some huge gainers instead of just the one 11-yard run and then just a few 4 or 5 yard gains and nothing else the whole game.

Awesome in the passing game on every route as we all know.

9. Crowder: C

Lacked separation. Shallow cross is bending back towards line of scrimmage and losing ground. Bad distribution on a vertical route.

One route he did run really well but Kirk got pressured on a 6 man rush by the 49ers, if Kirk had just one more second on that play he hits Crowder and Crowder probably scores a TD.

10. Mack Brown: incomplete, only had 4 plays. Had a reception. Poor short yardage run on 3rd and 1.

11. Doctson: No grade

Only played 19 snaps. Great route early on for the TD. Bad route at end of game. If he runs a better route on the last pass that Kirk threw him in the end zone, it’s a TD and we don’t have to kick the field goal. Like Crowder, Pryor and Grant, he not getting enough separation. Didn’t press deep enough didn’t work hard back well got no separation on that last pass play Kirk threw to him in the end zone. It should have been a TD.

Kirk did miss him on a similar route that he missed Pryor on when Pryor was open in the end zone. If Kirk had hit Doctson on that play it probably would have been a first down.

12. Pryor: C

Not getting enough separation. Peeking while running routes, looking back for the ball after 5 or 6 yards which is tipping off DBs on his route.

We have to worried about keeping him engaged. Hes on a one year deal abs could get frustrated if he doesn’t get consistent targets. He got open on a double move and Kirk could have had him for a TD on the play but Kirk threw the ball out of bounds.

He’s not blocking that consistently.

13. Grant: C

No distribution on verts, just like Crowder. He’s lacking separation on some routes. He missed an assignment on one play.

14. Scherff: A

Has becomes Cooley’s most favorite player to watch ever. First team All-Pro. He’s Mauling people in both the run game and pass game. He’s getting out on screens and clearing the way for Thompson downfield.

16. Niles Paul is their best blocking TE on contact but not at sustaining blocks but currently he’s much better than Reed and Davis.

Cooley didn’t grade him because he only had 16 snaps.

17. Trent Williams: A

I think Reed's blocking has become a huge liability. Add that to another reason on why our running game has been so stunted. What we actually miss is a Logan Paulsen type blocking TE in our offense. Never thought, I'd ever say that...

Sprinkle is supposed to be that guy.

I agree. I've felt that since we didn't keep Paulsen after he got hurt before the 2015 season. As Mknight said, we have sprinkle but he's hot a lot of developing to do. We can't say for sure that he's ever going to develop into what we want him to be, I hope he dies but we just don't know.

Reed & Davis have mostly been atrocious blockers for us. Reed always has been, Davis was good in San Fran but he wasn't a good blocker in Denv and has mostly been a liability blocking for us. It really sucks because they're both do amazing as receivers.

Ive thought for a few years we should try to move Reed to WR so he doesn't have to block LBs & DEs because 9 out of 10 times he won't get the job done, and the same can be said for Davis.

The problem with moving Reed to WR is that I don't think he has the speed to consistently separate against good corners but he does have the wiggle and route running to separate. He just wouldn't be a deep threat against corners but we could move him to the slot to go on deeper seam routes agains slot corners, lbs & safeties. He's great as a hybrid WR/TE or h-back but can't be an inline TE and sadly Davis has failed as an inline blocking TE more often than not as well.

doctson needs more snaps. reed needs to work more in the slot

Doctson needs more snaps for sure, but he also has to run better routes. He ran a poor route to end the game.

Cousins did miss him once on what probably would have been a 1st down and Cousins missed Pryor on what would have been a TD on the 2nd or 3rd drive of the game.

he is too talented to be getting 19 snaps. he needs to be on the football field more considering pryor has been bad. dez bryant doesnt run the whole route tree either.

I don’t think Pryor has been too bad but he needs to be more consistent for Kirk to trust him more. Truthfully, all of the WRs haven’t  been that much better or worse than the other ones.

They’ve all been inconsistent, all made mistakes on routes or run their routes at wrong depths at times, dropped passes and struggled at times to get separation. That being said, Kirk has missed Doctson, Crowder and Pryor for possible big plays in almost every game too, especially week 1 and vs the Rams.

Pryor does lead the team in receiving yards and is 2nd in wide receivers in receptions with 16 behind Crowder who has 17. I still believe they have to get Pryor the ball on more quick hitters, quick slants, throw it to him when coverage is off like we did a few times against the Rams to get it to him quick and let him run and get up the field so he can use his speed and running ability to get YAC. We need to do that more with Crowder also. I think they’ll both excel if we get them involved in the quick game and at them run up the field and get YAC.
