Congrats!

Jerry called, he just named you the GM of the Dallas Cowboys and your first task --> Building the Big Board. The scouts have submitted the reports, now it is up to you to build it.

[You are free to build the board as you see fit: Evaluate character; deduce scheme fit; weight need; determine positional value; etc.]

1st Round Big Board:

  1. T. Lawrence, Clemson, QB
  2. P. Sewell, Oregon, OL
  3. K. Pitts, Florida, TE
  4. J. Chase, LSU, WR
  5. J. Waddle, Alabama, WR
  6. R. Slater, Northwestern, OL
  7. J. Fields, Ohio State, QB
  8. D. Smith, Alabama, WR
  9. P. Surtain, Alabama, CB
  10. Z. Wilson, BYU, QB
  11. J. Owusu-Koramoah, Notre Dame, LB
  12. J. Horn, South Carolina

Is this Barmore? And is he the last 1st round grade we should have? Does this make it seem the draft is really deep & not top heavy or am I missing on some obvious answers?

Darrisaw, AVT, Newsome, Ojulari, Parsons are still 1st round grades in my book. Lance, Barmore, Moehrig more like 1/2s.

Is he? Why?

Positional value and every tool you could ask for.

QBs are an impossible part of this exercise for a fan base that has their QB already. As a GM and/or coach, at some point you are going to have to stake your career on a QB. Is Lance a worthy gamble? I say yes.

In which case, he’s a clear first round pick.

I’m totally unnerved by Parsons, and maybe his biggest hater here. But he’s a still probably my last 1st round grade.

We both know why, though. He’s an off the ball LB who is still learning that position, opted out in 2020, and is rumored to have character issues and doesn’t seem to love playing football. Lots of risk, there.

The only two “knocks” on him (if someone ones to find things to pick at) are the lack of on-field experience and that he’s coming from a lower division, which makes him raw and harder to evaluate. Even still, all of the tools are there, and his physical metrics are exactly what you want in a QB; big, strong, nice arm, athletic, good decision making, and he doesn’t turn the ball over. The only thing that is still relatively unproven is the leadership aspect, which is due to the lack of games played at the position. To me, he’s a mid-1st round pick.

Yeah, I’m avoiding him. Especially for Dallas. If I’m a fan of New England? Or Baltimore? Or Pittsburgh? A place with really strong coaching and culture? I’m a lot more willing to bet on that upside.

We need guys who can help create a culture. Not guys who need to be molded by one.
