Fate of Chargers' ownership at stake as Dean Spanos' sister asks court to force sale

This has to be an April Fool’s joke right? This part feels particularly hopeful.

Quote

While Forbes valued the Chargers at $2.6 billion last year, Berberian’s petition described the team as a “rare trophy asset” and noted that “the price a buyer is willing to pay is often not dictated by any economic metric.” The NFL recently finalized massive new media rights deals that could be worth more than $10 billion per year, something the filing asserts “will certainly attract potential buyers.”

The petition noted reports that Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, worth an estimated $180 billion, is interested in becoming an NFL owner and said “the Chargers could be a perfect opportunity.”

Chargers fans deserve new ownership. Circa 40 years of the Spanos family is enough. A pipe dream scenario would be someone that isn't a dimwit gets ahold of the team in a sale, and moves the team back to San Diego. But who am I kidding, that city will sadly probably never see another NFL team stake it's claim there.

Lmao don't be excited for Bezos if anything he'd shed even more costs to run it as leanly and "efficiently" as possible.

You are talking about a guy who ran a business for over a decade operating in the red and continuously reinvested in it with no concern about the losses bc of potential future earnings.  The guy keeps a streaming service that has no measure of market share going despite yearly cries to shut it down from the outside.  If you think for 1 second that Bezos wouldnt spend a ton of money to make his team the most profitable and most successful franchise in the NFL you are sorely mistaken

So apparently Dean is backpeddling on an agreement he made to his sister in 2019 to sell the team by 2024. I wonder if the sudden potential of Justin Herbert changed his mind.

Probably. This offseason has been more unDeanlike than usual if you catch my drift. It feels like they’re spending more for things not related to the salary cap. For example, it seems like they’re finally gearing for more analytics and even a sports science department finally.

Selling to Bezos would only be great if he brings the team back to SD, build his own stadium, and keep the brand the same. The chance of all of that happening is probably next to nil.

The Chargers being sold from the Spanos family would be huge for that org.     Going back to SD would be better but that's obviously no guarantee.  But new ownership would probably open the door from the city and fanbase perspective. There was no chance of reconciliation and return with the Spanos family at the top.
