Les Punting
Here's my quick assessment of Gutes moves in rounds 1-3, along with my preferred alternative picks/moves. Round 1: CB was a need, but not an overly pressing one considering they brought back King. Stokes has upside, but has some limitations. This is a deep CB class. Several of the mid-round guys look capable of developing into starters with a year of seasoning. No compelling need to spend a 1st at the position. Round 2: Adding a plug and play starter somewhere on the OL was arguably the top need of the offseason. No realistic day 1 OT starters were on the board, so going OC was fine. Myers has decent tools but if they were set on an OC its hard to understand passing on Humphreys. He was the more consistent/polished player. There were also some attractive alternatives at other positions, particularly with a short trade up. Round 3: Rodgers is OK, he's basically Cobb. He'll produce. Better prospects in that mold were available a bit earlier. My picks: 1st round: DT Barmore Sure he had some motor issues, but he has 1st round talent. Given the state of the DL group, he'd have played right away and likely been as impactful as any other defender available. 2nd round: (trade up w/4th): WR Eskridge For the same draft capital Gute used to move up for Rodgers, they could have moved up for Eskridge, a more explosive player and a better route runner. 3rd round: (trade up w/5th): C/G Green Green is a tad undersized, probably OC only, but is skilled and explosive enough to see the field right away. He's got starter potential at a considerably lower cost than Myers. Your picks?
