Jaguars decline Taven Bryan's 5th year option

Would have been $7.638M. He’s done absolutely nothing to indicate that he is worth even like a third of that.

From Urban’s statement the other day, it sounds like he’ll at least be given a legitimate chance to make the  team. But it’s going to be an uphill battle for him for sure.

There’s absolutely no reason to pick up that option and blindly lock yourself into it, based on anything he’s shown to date.

Like I said in the other thread...hurts nothing to bring him in for the year, see if something clicks with the new defense...and go from there.

If he balls and finds a fit in this defense to earn a $7m and change extension, I’m more than happy to hand it to him. And in that scenario, you’d think having that right “fit” and a coaching staff that has gotten the most out of him, after years of nothing...would have him welcoming that extension to stay here.

This is the only reasonable thing to do with his situation imo. If he gets to camp and it’s just looking hopeless...sure, unload him for a late round pick or whatever you can get. But if he’s showing some signs of life...with the athletic profile he was drafted on, I’d be keen to keep him around and see if he can get something going. If it ever “clicks” even in a niche role for him, it’s probably worth more than whatever chicken scratch we’d get for him.

If we got a 7 for him we can kick the pick down the line to a 1😈
