There is also a thing called DEPTH. I know we, as Lions fans, are not used to this concept, but good teams normally have more than one player capable at a position. John Penisini is a cheap, rotational NT that can relieve McNeill. Why wouldn't there be a spot for him on this roster?

My guess would be:

DE: Flowers/Williams/Bryant

NT: McNeill/Penisini

DE: Brockers/Hand

WOLB: R. Okwara/Harris/J. Okwara

ILB: Anzalone/Reeves-Maybin

ILB: Barnes/Tavai

SOLB: Collins/Onwuzurike

I was under the impression it was rare for teams to keep 2 NTs on their roster when NTs are typically only in on obvious rushing downs in today's pass happy NFL. I could be mistaken.

I think Penisini has a role. They say a base 3-4 but I expect that will only be about 40% - 50% of the time with a chunk of 5 man fronts.

You think we are playing a 290 lb DT at OLB?

I think they are going to put people where they fit best. Onwuzurike was misplaced as a NT in college. He’s solid at rushing the passer and I feel he can do it at DE and OLB.

He would be the biggest and slowest LB in the NFL.  I definitely don't think he will play NT but he will for sure play some DE in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 IMO.  But I don't see him lining up as a LB ever.

Very interesting. I guess a Brockers-McNeill-Zurike base DL makes a lot of sense.

Ha ha ha I just spent about five minutes scratching my head, asking myself who this Zurike guy is. I like it. I can remember how to spell it.

That line could be surprising.

(Ha. I couldn't remember how to spell the first half and just gave up.)

I agree. It seems like a really big, athletic 3-4 front. And, if those two picks in particular hit, our rebuild will have been accelerated greatly.
