Small Town Values
(News) Nicolas Chauvin: Stade Francais teenager dies after tackle in game at Bordeaux https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/46550462 Quote Nicolas Chauvin, who was 18, suffered a broken neck after a tackle early in a youth match at Bordeaux on Sunday. The injury led to the back-row suffering a cardiac arrest and brain damage due to a lack of oxygen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nicolas Chauvin: Clubs to hold minute's silence for dead Stade Francais player https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/46575485 Quote Professional clubs across Europe will hold a minute's silence this weekend in tribute to Stade Francais youth player Nicolas Chauvin, who died aged 18 after being injured in a match. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calls for rugby to be made safer after the deaths of three young players in France https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/109405614/calls-for-rugby-to-be-made-safer-after-the-deaths-of-three-young-players-in-france Quote A former French rugby professional has joined France's Sports Minister in pleading for rugby to be made safer after the recent deaths of three young players. A moment's silence was held before all matches in European rugby tournaments last weekend in memory of Stade Francais Paris academy player Nicolas Chauvin, 19, who died last week after breaking his neck in a youth match. He was the third young French player to die in 2018. A 17-year-old player was found dead in bed a day after injuring himself while making a tackle in an amateur game in Billom last May. Former France under-20 international Louis Fajfrowski collapsed and died in the dressing room after he was accidentally hit in the chest during a collision in a pre-season friendly for his ProD2 club Stade Aurillac in August. Small Town Values
(News) Continued Reaction / Fallout from the Nicolas Chauvin Death... *** ** * French rugby authorities call for lower tackle height after players’ deaths https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/dec/21/rugby-union-french-lower-tackle-height-players-deaths Quote French rugby authorities have called for a major change to reduce tackles to waist height after the death of the Stade Francais academy player Nicolas Chauvin this month. Chauvin, 19, died after breaking his neck in a match in Bordeaux and his funeral was held in Paris this week. He was the third young player in France to die after a rugby game in the past five months, which has led to a national debate about player safety. In response the French Rugby Federation and Ligue National de Rugby called World Rugby to an emergency player welfare summit in Paris on Thursday in which they proposed banning two-player tackles and tackling head-to-head as well as reducing the tackle height to be level with the waist. The FFR president, Bernard Laporte, said in a subsequent statement: “Rugby must become a game of movement where avoidance overrides the impact. For this, it is important to change attitudes and change the rules, especially on tackling.

Small Town Values
(Late News / Update) Christian Wade leaves Wasps to pursue NFL career: https://www.skysports.com/rugby-union/news/12551/11529293/christian-wade-leaves-wasps-to-pursue-nfl-career Quote England winger Christian Wade has quit Wasps to seek a career in the NFL. Wade is third in the list of all-time try scorers in the Premiership with 82 tries but has only earned one cap for England, back in 2013, and that is believed to be a big factor in his decision to leave rugby union. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Update) Christian Wade joined by six others in NFL International Player Pathway: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001002116/article/christian-wade-joined-by-six-others-in-nfl-international-player-pathway Quote Seven athletes from five countries will compete for a spot in the 2019 International Player Pathway Program, the NFL announced today. Instituted in 2017, the program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster. The league has identified seven top athletes from five countries that will compete for a place in the 2019 program. Given the program's success to date, the NFL widened its search for international talent, with players from Brazil and Mexico participating for the first time. Athletes from Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom will again be represented, including two professional Rugby players, Valentine Holmes and Christian Wade, who are attempting to cross over to the NFL. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHRISTIAN WADE, Running Back/Kick Returner, (England), Age: 27 Represented the English National Rugby Team at the U16, U18 and U20 levels. Was selected to the British and Irish Lions squad, the highest honor as a rugby player. His 82 Premiership Rugby tries (touchdowns) ranks third on the league's all-time list. A projected running back, he has high athletic ability and a versatile skill set. **** Side Note: Christian Wade is a pro (Rugby Union) player. Valentine Holmes is a pro (Rugby League) player. They're similar, but different sports. **** Extra Thought: Good luck to all involved, especially Wade. *************************************************************************** (Footage: Christian Wade - NFL Short / Football Drills) http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/0ap3000001002140/Rugby-star-Christian-Wade-switches-to-the-NFL [+] Edited January 8, 2019 by Marc MacGyver
