The NFL has released a statement defining voluntary workouts, Organized Team Activities and Mini-camps
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-offseason-workout-schedule-revealed-rookie-minicamp-otas-mandatory-minicamp/

Per a press release

Phase One (April 19-May 14) has been extended to four weeks, with activities limited to strength and conditioning, virtual meetings, and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two (May 17-21) has been shortened to one week. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills, “perfect play” drills, drills and plays conducted with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, with each group permitted to align eleven or fewer players across from eleven or fewer players. Players on one side of the ball may execute a play, but players on the opposite side of the ball may not initiate contact with, or attempt to impede the progress of, players who are running the play. All such drills must be conducted at an acceptable walkthrough pace.

Phase Three (May 24-June 18) remains four weeks in length. Beginning in Phase Three, clubs may conduct in-person meetings and classroom instruction subject to COVID-19 testing cadence, tracking, facility access and other protocols.  During Phase Three, teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Chiefs rookie mini-camp runs 14 May to 16 May.

Nice little article on 5th round pick Cornell Powell, who made an impression in the rookie camp.

I come from a winning program and this is a winning program as well, so I feel like that transition is going to be smooth. I know what to expect. They expect championships and that’s where I’m coming from being at Clemson.
Cornell Powell

Bolton impressed.

Kaindoh is working hard. Given his lack of technique, this is important.

Niang in excellent shape.

Of a tryout, the team signed WR Daurice Fountain.

The teams signed CB Manny Patterson from Maine.

The corresponding waiver/cuts are DB Jaylon McClain-Sapp and WR Tajae Sharpe.

Optional second phase opens with 81 in house. These are optional workouts until the formal minicamp next month and the Union has encouraged players to sit out over COVID concerns. 90% turnout is therefore impressive.

L'Jarius Sneed has received another bit of recognition. Last fall he was unofficially called the best rookie CB of the year and the biggest impact rookie CB in several years. This is more formal. PFF has nemed Sneed as the Chiefs' most underrated player. In Mike Trapasso's after season redraft, Sneed went top 10.

A fourth-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, Sneed was a real find for the Chiefs and a big reason why they were able to make it back to the Super Bowl. In a season in which rookie cornerbacks were regularly torched, Sneed allowed a passer rating of just 66.6 when targeted, including the playoffs.

Imagine what he could have done in a full season.

Things to watch for in the OTAs starting this week.

  • How is the OL lining up? My best guess for initial starting unit is Brown/Thuney/Blythe/Long/Remmers. This means LDT and the rookies need to earn starting jobs, if they can. The battle between LDT and Kyle Long could get interesting.
  • Who emerges from the cattle call at WR? Hill and Robinson have well established roles. Surprisingly, Mecole Hardman does not. Byron Pringle is the head of a large pack of candidates. Rookie Cornell Powel may make some noise.
  • Who will play DE? The roster says Frank Clark, Mike Danna, Taco Charlton, rookie Joshua Kaindoh and a lot of not much. Who will be asked to step up from PS or step out from DT?
  • How are the rehabs going? Everyone knows that Pat Mahomes is going to participate, but not at 100%. Deandre Baker and Mike Hughes are coming off injuries. Taco had a season ending broken ankle.
  • Second and third year standouts. The biggest change is often between season one and season two, though WR and DB can take a third year. Mecole Hardman, Juan Thornhill and Rashad Fenton are our 3rd year WR and DB. CEH, Willie Gay, L'Jarius Sneed, Mike Danna are 2nd year players. So is Lucas Niang, though he's technically a rookie.
  • How are LB configured? Our most reliable LB is not back. Willie Greene is another of the rehabs to worry about. Last season, we went whole games with only two LB getting more than 15% of the defenses snaps. Rookie Nick Bolton may be expected to jump straight in.
  • Who will be this year's Turk Wharton? Turk was an UDFA last year. By the end of the season, he was pulling more snaps than Derrick Nnadi.

Proving sports writers think like I do, there is this.

Pat Mahomes showed for first week OTAs, though he was absent Thursday. HC Reid said Mahomes is full speed. A number of other players did not attend, including Khalen Saunders, Frank Clark, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Kamalei Correa and Charvarius Ward. Overall, it was a good turnout.

From the first week of OTA

  • The OL was Brown/Thuney/Humphrey/Long/ Remmers. It's worth noting that LDT was not participating this week.
  • It's still very early, but WR Cornell Powell has impressed.
  • The list of former Chiefs on the FA market is dwindling. Three more players signed elsewhere--Tajae Sharpe, Patrick Omameh, Ricky Seals-Jones. Bashad Breeland is drawing interest from the Vikings and Bears.

More on the battle for RG. The Chiefs have Long, LDT, Allegretti and Durant to consider.

10 hours ago, kingseanjohn said:
I think we can call it official now. I don't like that our primary plan is to move, arguably, the 2nd best DT in the league to the outside. Jones and Reed in the interior could destroy pockets and I think that'd be more valuable.

One of the knocks on Jones has been that he's not the best run defender, while Reed is exactly that. Moving Jones to DE lets Nnadi's strength into the game. A DL of Jones/Reed/Nnadi/Clark would be stout against the run. Spags has always been about interchangeable parts. Jones can play DT and DE. Reed can play 1-tech or 3-tech. Also in this mix are Turk Wharton, who is a good run defender and has the physical makeup to play DE, and Mike Danna who can move inside.

....

HC Reid made some comments about how things are going. They are fairly long so I won't quote them, but they focus on chemistry. This is not just players within a unit, but also players with their coaches. Several teams have had disappointing attendance at optional events. The Chiefs are among tops in the league.

As might be guessed, the OL is working hard at forming a unit. It's an interesting mix of veterans and rookies. They are even using the starting DL to learn recognition. It's worth noting that the DL is itself a major rebuild.
