Concurrent with camp, the team announces a significant FO rearrangement. The list of titles is too long to quote, but the headline move is the Chiefs so-called secret weapon, Mike Borgonzi, being promoted to assistant GM.

Somewhat related, the Chiefs announced the opening of an outreach program for women, patterned after the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship, in San Francisco. The program will be named after Lamar Hunt's widow, Norma.

Some bad news. One of the OL signees, Kyle Long, fractured his kneecap and could be out until the season starts.

Fortunately, he plays the deepest position on the line--RG. The presumed next up is LDT, but Allegretti played well there last season, plus Yasir Durant and Mike Remmers are candidates.

Allegretti played LG

Last year, that was mostly correct, because Wylie played RG. When he played at all, Yasir Durant was RG, and briefly RT. All that said, Allegretti is in the mix for all three IOL positions, including C.

I could have mentioned Wylie at RG, but something tells me he has played his last snap as a Chief.

Long just can't catch a break.

Poor choice of words after a broken bone injury. ;)

Update: Things are still being evaluated, but it is beginning to look like KL will not be ready to start the season, if at all. At 33, this could be the end of his road.

Mini camp is underway. Three no shows--Martinas Rankin, Armani Watts, Kyle Long. Attending without helmet, Deandre Baker (broken leg) and Malik Herring (ACL).

Several GIFs.https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2021/6/15/22535057/watch-rounding-up-all-the-chiefs-production-day-videos

Six players to watch. An interesting one is Devon Key, and UDFA DB. He was pulling time with the first unit in OTAs.

LDT saying there is no place like Arrowhead.

Pics from Day #1. Unlike OTAs, mini-camp invites the media.

As they have done several times before, the Chiefs have signed a tryout player to the 90 man roster. This time it's Darrius Shepherd, a Blue Springs native who spent the last two years with Green Bay. He will be in the mix for punt return duties. Martinas Rankin was waived to make room.

Spring events are now finished. Reid had some comments.
https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2021/6/18/22540175/andy-reid-wraps-offseason-workouts-and-looks-forward-to-training-camp

I told the players this — that first of all, I appreciated their attendance during this time. We have a lot of new faces, so it gave us a great introduction to the offense, defense and special teams, which I thought was huge for us. Then, we’ll go ahead and fine-tune everything once we get up to training camp. But again, I thought it went well. I liked the attitude of the guys. They came in ready to work, and that’s what they did. They finished up here with a little conditioning drill, and they did great on that, so they’ve got a good mindset. As coaches, we appreciate that.

He also commented on upgrades to the remote learning available last season and what will be available going forward. Clyde Edwards-Hellaire and Willie Gay both had difficulty picking things up last season.

On these Zoom calls, as you know, you can install. You can do all that. You can talk about fundamentals and techniques, but you can’t work on them, and that’s just what’s real. So, this gives you an opportunity to actually run the play and work on the fundamentals and techniques and let the players after the coaches have evaluated their last season to sit there and help them get better with the techniques and fundamentals they might need this season. I think it’s a win-win. I think it’s great to have the technology, but at the same time, I think it’s important that we’re still able to get them on the field.

Here is a summary of articles from mini-camp week. The one that gets my attention is that appears Chris Jones really wants to play DE. I'm good with that. Nnadi, Wharton and Reed are more than sufficient for a base rotation.

HC Reid called Noah Gray "QB friendly."

Reid also likes what he saw from Clyde.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2021/06/19/kansas-city-chiefs-andy-reid-mandatory-minicamp-clyde-edwards-helaire-jerick-mckinnon/

Yeah, I think that’s good. We didn’t have a huge expanded role for him in the pass game, just kind of getting him in the swing of the defenses that the NFL plays and then all the run plays that we have and the routes that we did have that tie in with everybody. But we’ve tried to give him a little bit more this offseason and he’s handled it well. I look forward to getting him up to training camp where we can keep growing in that area.

When he was drafted, CEH was compared to Brian Westbrook, who played for Reid with the Eagles. Westbrook had a four year period where he caught over 300 passes, while averaging over 1000 yards rushing.

Here's another sum up article. The article makes a point how well rookies played. Trey Smith and Noah Gray had 1st team reps, as did UDFA S Devon Key. More on him below.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-mandatory-minicamp-takeaways-patrick-mahomes-offensive-line-injuries-rookies/

Devon Key has the best shot (of the UDFA) at earning a role. This undrafted rookie has already been spotted taking repetitions with the first-team defense in Kansas City. The 6-foot-1 and 210-pound defensive back has been playing as a box safety, which is something that he did well for the Hilltoppers. He’s a good athlete that is known as a downhill player who takes good angles and has a penchant for making big tackles. Key has seen some repetitions as an overhang and working over the slot, which is an interesting development.

Key has the build and mindset of a box safety, which is currently filled by Dan Sorensen, who is possibly in his last year. Getting first team reps and covering multiple roles is a very good sign. It does not hurt that he excelled at ST in college.
