Dolphins sign veteran CB Jason McCourty

Not Malik Hooker (hopefully we still bring him in), but a veteran CB joins Miami after McCain's departure. The brother of Patriots' Devin McCourty, he spent the last three seasons with his brother in New England, starting 33 games in that span. He now joins their rival.

He was awful last year. Straight awful. It could be because the defense was way way worse in the front seven. It could be he has hit his cliff. My guess it is a bit of both. The rest of the defense in 2018-19 covered up his deficiencies. Without that talent around him, he got exposed and his age showed. Might be able to get some mileage out of him with a move to safety but I can't confidently say he can rebound in 2021.

If that's true he might not make it past the first cut in training camp. Fins have drafted three DB's in the past 12 months (one CB, two Safeties) so McCourty faces an uphill climb against young guys.

33 games, officially. Even then, he was only ever as high as 2nd in snap count for CBs (2018, when JC was a rookie). 2019 he was 4th and last year, with Gilmore in and out of the lineup, he was third. 

Wouldn’t really call him a starter for most of his Pats’ tenure.

Dont get the move while McCain may not scream stud, a 34 year old in McCourty who has dramatically lost a step isnt the answer either. Not sure if the guy has any juice left to be on top come week 1 as a starter.

They're both kind of booty but one plays a safety position so he hasn't gotten exposed as much in coverage one on one.

Obviously you don't get the move if you think we signed him to be a starter. He's joining a loaded secondary as veteran depth. We aren't looking for answers in our secondary, we have them already.

Its not obvious nor is the secondary loaded, you just  drafted Holland in hopes of being your starting FS. You then signed Coleman to a 1 year deal to be the slot corner in which both position McCain played at. McCain is better at the Slot then he is as the Safety position but either way he filled a starting position. Not to mention you are hoping Eric Rowe turns in to the Safety they slid him to when Flores brought him in which he has been lacking at the Safety position. So yes I am questioning the move as adding a 34 year old CB, as I stated before dont see him having any juice to be a starter if he is needed, should have restructured McCain then paying him. With his versatility he could at least play several positions if one key db goes down, cant say the same for McCourty who has been disappointing and now ancient.
