Preseason Rumblings

THE DUKE

I will be highly shocked if Bates isn't extended before the season starts.  Bates even seems to want to be here long term and be a leader on this defense.  If by some chance he isn't extended, then he is 100% getting franchise tagged.

Yeah, Bates isn't going anywhere. He plays at a high level and deserves top safety money. And the team has the cap space and not a lot of star power on defense. Bates will get his 15 mil apy deal. Question is what they give Hubbard. He's probably a 9-10 mil apy guy but might want more.

Honestly not sure if they'll budge there.  He's a coach favorite, but we have Hendrickson, Ossai, Sample, and Kareem all likely here this year and next.  Injuries slowed him up quite a bit last year after a good first two years.

Bates will get extended the Tuesday before the preseason finale.  They always got done after the second or third preseason game, but now there isn't wiggle room to keep the Bengal Way.

Hubbard will come down to price.  They have enough cap space right now to do both and front load the deals.

A lot of good news out of training camp this year.  Defense seems to be ahead of the offense which is good news for our Secondary.

Defenses are always ahead of offenses early in camp (like in spring training when pitchers are way ahead of hitters).

The oline has been rather leaky, to put it mildly.  Hopefully that improves with pads coming on.

Did the forum contract COVID?  We all seem to be quarantined on here.

Oh, and I think Mike Brown understands that it might be cheaper to tag Bates twice than to reset the safety market with him.  The smart thing to do would be to front load the bonus money and large first and second year payout on an average of $15m per, so that most of it is is paid by the time they have to start paying the offense (Higgins, Jonah, Burrow, Chase, in that order)
