It's reporting day for rookies and QBs.
https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2021/7/23/22590152/chiefs-players-begin-reporting-to-training-camp-on-friday

For what it may be worth, this article throws out seven Chiefs who have never made the Prop Bowl, but could--Sneed, Thuney, Hitchens, Reed, Butker, Clyde, Taco. They missed the rookies. With the attention on the OL, Humphrey and Niang could make splashes. While we are at it, Bolton is a decent shot at DROY attention.

Concurrent with first day, Armani Watts was placed on PUP and UDFA Malik Herring to NFI, effectively ending his season before it began. On the other extreem, DeAndre Baker practiced for the first time since breaking his leg in game #17.

Deandre Baker claims to be close to 100%. This could get interesting, since the Chiefs brought in two former first round CB, Baker and Mike Hughes and still have Rashad Fenton.

Figuring two positions are occupied by Ward and Sneed, Baker, Hughes, and Fenton are competing for snaps. Both Baker and Hughes have experience playing press coverage on the boundary. Both have dealt with significant time lost to injuries. Hughes is more physical and Baker is more refined. Fenton is the biggest of the three and is in his third year with the Chiefs. The luxury is that L'Jarius Sneed can play anywhere, including safety, so if anyone excels in a role, Sneed can play beside him.

Let's not forget Juan Thornhill, who spent most of last year recovering from an ACL injury. When he's healthy, Thornhill is one of the very few single-deep safeties in the NFL. With excellent coverage and ball skills, Thornhill is a natural compliment to press coverage by the CB. Spagnuolo may have the option of being very aggressive this season.

COVID checks in LS James Winchester went to COVID reserve. Partly related, the team made three personnel moves, dropping WR Chris Finke and signing Alex Okafor and LS Drew Scott.

This article has three things we learned from the offseason--The team values line play on both sides, there is pressure on Mecole Hardman, the team likes the CB they have.

In 2020, Anthony Hitchens arrived slightly below his 2019 playing weight and is once again down from his 2020 playing weight. He intends to keep the weight down to about 230 to increase his range. In previous years he played around 240. Weight in the NFL is a balance. Increased weight allows harder hits, but you pay with less movement.

One of the standard points writers make about the Chiefs this offseason is the pressure on Mecole Hardman to grow into a lead receiver role. Hardman claims he doesn't feel any additional pressure. Learning to play WR in the NFL was already a lot of pressure. He just has more exposure now. It's worth noting that Hardman has a lot of experience playing with Sammy gone, because Watkins was frequently injured.

Chiefs fans love Tyrann Mathieu because he is a very vocal leader. The whole secondary has gelled around him. This article shows how DC Spagnuolo is teaching Juan Thornhill to be the same sort of leader. it's worth noting that getting Thornhill back is a huge element in this defense. The Chiefs are one of a very few teams that can play a single deep scheme, because Thornhill is so rangy.

Orlando Brown thinks the Chiefs will be able to run the ball this season. If nothing else, they will be bigger and more physical than last year.

Updated 90 man roster, by position. Note that those on active reserves are included. Currently that is Kyle Long and Armani Watts PUP, Nick Keizer and Malik Herring NFL. James Winchester COVID and WR Chris Finke IR do not count against the 90. Note that Finke was waived, cleared waivers, and was re-signed to IR.
