Nico Harrison has zero experience working in an NBA front office, he was a higher up in Nike's marketing department. Maybe he can use his relationships to try and lure stars to Dallas? Both are weird hires.

Nico supposedly is a very good basketball mind but this move was clearly to attract other top stars to come to Dallas. They are in one of the major cities yet no free agent ever wants to come play there. Let's see if they can get a true star to pair with Luka in the next few years.

This move was to assure Luka is still a Mavs in four or five years.

I'm sure his relationships with agents and players across the league will benefit the Mavericks but there's more to being a general manager than that. The key for him will be to leverage those relationships to lure free agents to Dallas.

Hopefully I'm wrong but this seems like a major downgrade

Carlslie to Kidd is definitely a downgrade, Harrison to Nelson may be an upgrade just because of all of the connections he has around the league and his potential ability to recruit a star to play with Luka. The Lakers and Warriors both hired agents as their general managers and then were able to acquire LeBron/AD and Durant to push their teams over the top to win titles.

NBA vs NFL free agency has always been so interesting to me, like how we just saw the best FA safety on the market leave Los Angeles for Cleveland, but never in a million years would a top player leave the Lakers to play for the Cavaliers.

Yes, was out in Dallas just last year. What's wrong with it? I'll give you Houston>Dallas in terms of city, but Dallas is still one of the biggest markets in the league.

The big market thing is also pretty overrated, imo. Other than LeBron, Durant, Kyrie, Kawhi, and Shaq, what other superstar level players have left smaller market teams via free agency to sign with a team in a bigger market? They're almost always moved via trade.

Trades dictated to big markets like AD and Melo and Howard etc.

Point being, Dallas is a big market (not to the extent of LA/NY), yet they aren't able to attract anyone. Dallas has a mega star now and will need Nico to help get someone to pair up with Luka. This is a long-term play hoping Nico will eventually be able to deliver and assure Luka re-signs after his next deal.

Ehh, I think it'll be important for them to make a splash signing within the next 2-3 years. If they can't then I can't imagine Luka stays.

Well yeah, they will be trying to sign someone ASAP. Never said otherwise.
