Doordash and UberEats: Anyone try them?

Recommended Posts

So I just recently lost a job I've been at for over three years now. It's not too big a deal seeing as I wanted to look to change careers anyway but it does make me question what I'm going to do in the meantime. I intend to eventually become a web developers; starting small freelance projects before potentially looking for something more stable. The problem is my coding experience is a little rusty and it'll take a few months before I'm at the level where I can comfortably market my skills.

With that in mind a friend suggested I do a food delivery service. I have a relatively new car, a 2016 model, with very little wear on it and live not to far from a popular area surrounding the university. With so many homes and business parks around I figured I could make pretty good money doing 5-8 hours a day.

So my question is does anyone have an experience driving for Doordash or UberEats? What did you like or dislilke about it?

The problem is that a lot of other people have had the same thought, so there's less to go around. Things are also opening back up, so people are using the services less.

I did DoorDash for a while, and it really doesn't make enough money to survive. You can do it, but you're working way more than you would want. They also keep doing predatory things like making you pay to get more deliveries (Some are doing a priority mode that gets you more deliveries, but you have to take less money per). Over the few months that I did it, I only averaged over minimum wage a few times. Personally, if I were to do it again, I'd just go get a job at a pizza place. You get minimum wage, paid for each delivery/mileage,  then tips. You have at least some security, instead of sitting in a parking lot for 20-30 minutes and hoping you get something.

I read this today:

https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-dara-khosrowshahi-delivered-ubereats-2021-6

Not sure if this is reflective of the experience (pretty sure it isn't, actually) but some good reading nonetheless.

I've Uber-ed before, during the Super Bowl in Houston - I had a big black SUV, so it was pretty much exclusively Uber Black. Over that weekend, I made enough to pay for our family vacation in Destin, FL - but that was an incredibly busy time, so it's also not reflective of the experience.

Interesting. According to the article below from ET glassdoor says $12-18/hr. Isnt min wage like 8ish? I wonder what the difference is?

I just need enough money to pay for basic bills. I'm living with family so rent isn't a problem but water, internet and my own personal expenses are due every month. I figured this would be a way to take care of the essentials so I can focus on coding more.

But if they're pulling sleezy stuff...

Minimum is around $12 here. I usually made $8-$10. I’m sure it’s been different since the pandemic, but the companies aren’t in it for your benefit. I know for sure Lyft is doing a priority thing where you take a 30% less cut, but they give you more rides. Drainers are saying you don’t get rides unless you use that mode.

Uber bribed a hospital to get a woman’s medical records so they could find a way to cover up her rape. I’m never ok with dealing with a company that would even consider something like that.

DoorDash used to take any discounted, or free deliveries out of driver’s tips. They say they stopped doing it, but I can’t trust a company that would do it, which is why I quit driving for them.

People that I’d talk to that did it full-time were saying they had to work the limit to make enough to survive. That’s 12-14hrs. You may take home what looks like $12/hr, but then you have to take out tax, wear and tear on the car, and gas. I’d make $$40-$60 driving from 4:30pm to 8-9pm, and that would be around 100 miles of driving. I did a little better with Lyft, but it was also more hours to make that $100

DoorDash is awesome... when its busy and they're offering peak pay/ promo incentives.  I'm in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL Area. Started doordashing late January.

I only DoorDash when its peak pay minimum of $2.00 or a promo incentive where it'll make sense.

I'm on and off delivery every two weeks or so.

10-12 hours over the weekend, Friday - Sunday, and usually average $24-26 an hour. Last month did the 25 orders for $200 bonus. Averaged $32 bucks an hour over 11 hours plus kept the mileage low.  I usually go thru about a tank of gas in my 2020 Camry.

The bonus essentially made each order worth 11 Dollars minimum.

( $8 Bonus + $3 Base pay + ? Peak + ? Tip)

Good Tips When Door Dashing

Aim for three deliveries an hour.

Dash during the rain. much more orders come thru and you can usually deny crappy orders and get another order instantly.

Minimum $1.00 per mile driven , ideally $1.50+ :

My acceptance rate is 32% so don't worry about not accepting orders. If it sucks , don't take it.

<4 mile orders are awesome.  anything past 7 isn't worth it when you factor in time to driving back to Hot zones.

Do not take order that send you out your delivery zone.

Pollo Tropical, Wing stop, and drive thru fast food places late night are terrible for wait times. I've been at stores 10-20 minutes waiting.

DONT be afraid to speak up when in the restaurants while waiting for an order. its a good chance your order is ready. Be annoying if you have to because most FAST Food workers have the awareness of a chair.

Send text to customers stating what's going on. MY approval rate is 99%

If one area has a high peak pay, EX. 4$ peak pay, and the rest have only $2 .. Do NOT go to the  highest peak area. It will be over populated. Never fails.

This seems pretty typical based on everything I’ve seen, as well. Uber’s “average” they give out is inflated quite a bit by drivers that only hop on during surge pricing. You can make great money *per hour* if you happen to live in a city that gets high congestion when events get out and only work for the hour each day immediately after. But getting $40 for an hour five times a week isn’t going to get you very far.

I quit a job I had been at for 14 years and did a coding bootcamp. While I was job searching I dabbled in a few things - did Uber eats for a day.

Other people have better info than me, but my take is that if you live in a big/main/populated area, and you're willing to work during both lunch and dinner, you'll do really well. With so many people working from home, a lot of people want food delivered during work, and obviously dinner as well.

I know you mentioned that you're going to freelance, and I don't know what your experience level is - and I work with a few people who have done what you're planning - I had to take out a loan for the bootcamp, but the difference between my prior job salary and current one is more than the cost of the bootcamp.

I feel like it would be more cost effective if you had a lower valued car

Street legal dirt bike? Or do they make their drivers use 4-wheeled vehicles?

75+ mpg not uncommon, vehicle more geared towards owner maintenance, certain areas have laws that could benefit you like the ability to drive off-road or split lanes

I’d say since you don’t have any major financial responsibilities and you can make your own hours to do whatever you want, just go for it until it gives you a reason not to. I kinda envy the openness of a schedule working for Uber/etc would give
