It has been 38 years. He as sort of Jamaal Charles beta version and a bright light in a dark time for the franchise. He died saving a child from drowning. the stretch of I-435 near the stadium has been dedicated to him.

Well before my time, but I remember when I became a fan, when I was searching around for any info I could about the team and the history to learn more about what I was falling for, reading his story. Great man, and such a crucial part of the organization's history. One of those cases where I don't think you can tell the history of the Chiefs without telling his story.

There are some signs going up on I-435 in Delaney's memory.

Joe Delaney was part of the new attitude Marv Levy brought to the team. It was not what it would be under Shottenheimer a few years later, but the faded era of Dawson and Stram was finally put to rest. Levy would have better results in Buffalo, but he was an important milestone in the Chiefs' saga. Joe D was an important part of that legacy.
