Trojan
This seems like a tremendous amount of cap invested in positions other teams tend to not value with RB and RT. I guess Kamara is unlikely to actually play out that 25mil year, and it's not as dramatic as it seems and the Saints do a lot of work with void years. Just weird allocation, but obviously tremendous players. Armstead, the left tackle, for example is on his last year but has 3 void years left to pay out on. Does Armstead being owed 13mil in 22 without playing, and then this resigning mean that Ramzcyk or Peat is going to kick out to LT soon? Are they locked into drafting one? Seems smart to reward your great homegrown talent, just the Saints structure everything odd and if Jameis balls out then that's another huge contract that needs to be addressed, or Hill who also has those void years. Saints better hope the TV money jumps enough to keep their scheme up, and that when other teams hit that boost in cap they don't rapidly outpace the Saints. I almost feel as if the Saints would have been better served trading these strong assets for draft capital and bowing out of contention to rebuild, reload and reset their cap.

Still think this deal is a steal for the saints. 18m per year is gonna look cheap when the cap goes up Agreed, can't go wrong signing the best RT in football for under 20 million a year. Seems like a good deal for both sides here.

Shaq is a great pass rusher, but he isn’t a terror against the Saints. He didn’t sack Brees until their 4th meeting when the Bucs lost 3-38 and Brees had 4 TDs and a 135 passer rating. The Bucs went 0-4 in their four regular season meetings with Shaq. In their first 2 meetings Shaq managed 1 QB hit, 1 solo tackle, and one mop-up tackle. And that was with Teddy B for one game. You can talk about Brees getting the ball out quickly, but he was sacked 25 times in 2019 and 2020, Barrett registered just one of those despite being the best pass rusher in the division and facing Brees more than any other pass rusher in that time. Grady Jarrett, Vic Beasley, Derek Roberson and Kingley Keke all brought down Brees multiple times in the window that Shaq brought down Brees once. Jarrett and Keke may not have been facing Ramy all that often, but Barrett only faced him 6 times in their first matchup. Just like how Julio Jones fumbles more against us than he scores, Shaq gets extra attention too. Saints generally do a good job neutralizing the big threats their opponent brings to the field. This is definitely a theory. Ramczyk started his career at LT filling in for Armstead and looked really solid even for a rookie in his first couple starts. You have to weigh the risk in trying to move him back to LT vs the reward when you look at how many teams don’t mind putting their pass rusher up against the RT. You’re not chasing the QBs blindside, but if you can get in their face and pressure them it might be just as good. Peat on the other hand, filled in at LT a few times as well. He was OK not great, but definitely a guy plenty of teams would be happy to have manning the LT spot. The saints also have good luck drafting offensive lineman. So it’s really hard to say what way they might go with it. Edited July 1, 2021 by Dome
