Towerbridge
I can't believe the NFL was stupid enough to go to 17 games. More injuries, records will be shattered. Did I also say more injuries. Also you can't compare season team stats anymore with the past going back to 1978

NYRaider
Giants, Falcons, Jets, and Jaguars are the 4 realistic candidates but I don't see any scenario where any of these teams doesn't win at least a couple of games.

The league adopted the 14 game schedule when it only had 14 teams. The league doubled in size by 1978, thus the addition of 2 games. My issue isnt with the 17th game IN GENERAL. My issue is with WHY? What was the purpose? What does it accomplish? The only answer in this case is more money. It wasnt adapting to a growing league and it sure as hell doesn't improve anything. The simple fact is that ANYTHING the league does is designed to maximize profit. Literally speaking, nothing else matters. Player safety, public perception, international exposure, partnerships with casinos, stances on marijuana use... If it makes (or saves) a buck, the NFL is on it and that's the only reason why they're on it.

Is there any evidence that teams that wound up routinely playing in the playoffs end up with more injuries than teams who don't?

I agree with everything you wrote, but my point was there was more logic and reasoning BEYOND just money when the league jumped from 14 to 16 games. In this case, its ONLY money.

Back then, the league wasn't nearly the profit monster it is now.
THE DUKE
I think it's more likely that every team wins at least 3 games than one team wins 0 games.
Shockwave
Wish they would have just added an additional bye week to achieve the 17 game season for each team rather then actually extended the season. I'm always in favor of more football. But now we'll have debated about 17 game seasons vs 16 vs 14. And it just gets more and more complicated. 5,000 yards passing used to be a grand achievement, now it'll be the meh standard.

I mean, we get to watch another week of football. An additional fantasy match up. One less preseason game. An additional inter-conference match up that will change every year. Once you cope with the fact that some records will be broken (not all will) and that the final records will be weird - there's a lot that it improves. Fans may not care about preseason. It is invaluable to teams, coaches and players. Another week of regular season football was completely unnecessary. Again, what does it improve besides the money they earn. You said there is alot that it improves, but didn't actually name anything. All they did was add another game onto teams who are extremely tired by the end of the season, and now playoff teams are going to be even more tired going into it, which will affect the quality of the playoffs. It adds more chances for injuries and could very well shorten careers. So Im really curious to hear what it actually improves.

Fans are all that matters. Without fans, it's the XFL. People who love watching football, love fantasy - they're getting an extra regular season game and one less preseason game. They get to see an inter-conference game that they otherwise would have to wait to see. There are downsides too, but those are the positives or depending on how you look at it, improvements. I see them as improvements.
